Anyone else not believe in Valentines Day

Jump to: Newest in thread

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

I personally think you don’t need a special day to tell the person in your life that you love them. Plus it has got too commercialised.

The true meaning of Valentines Day is to let someone know they have a secret admirer.

Anyone else with me or am I the Grinch who stole Valentines Day?

I actually dissagree on the "you dont need a day" argument. As frankley we all end up taking the people in our lives for granted. A singled out day for each of the classes of people in our lives is good. It reminds us that these people are special and affords us the opertunity to show them.

We're also social creatures as nuch as people like to pretend we aren't so these days also allow us all to engage in that part of our lives where we act communally and judge each other for whatever it is we choose to do.

As for the comercial argument meh your entire life is commercial. Why would today be any different?

But im single so i may be wildly off the mark

Is it too much to buy a card for a couple of quid and spend a fiver on a box of chocolates? Is that how much you love your other half?!

It's just a day.no one has said if you celebrate valentines day you can show love and affection any other time of the year.

The commercialised argument is nonsense.

It’s up to us if we buy into the commercial side of Valentine’s Day. And it can easily be celebrated without buying into it!

Well I bloody love it. Even when I was single I loved it.

I'm quite a romantic person I do kind gestures all year round with my partner and my lovers. I'm always doing special treats and things it's nice to remind them that I deserve treats too because you know how pants men are generally at the mushy stuff.

It doesn't need to be expensive.

It’s fine not to enjoy or celebrate something but I appreciate that others enjoy it and that’s fine

So from that you make Valentine’s Day a reminder for men to be romantic. That’s a very good theory

It’s my son’s first chance to celebrate St Valentine’s Day. He’s a student with very little money, but he and his girlfriend are completely head over heels with each other. It is absolutely lovely to see him thinking carefully about what he will get her as a token of his affection. Romance is alive and well and I think today is a day to celebrate it. The commercialisation is inevitable, that’s what businesses do, the important thing for me is the sentiment. A day to celebrate romance and love and a bit of lust too

Its mainly the price of flowers tbh unless you shop at Aldi, also getting an early booking for a meal out too, there is alot of places that do sales like lovehoney and then there's the set meals that m&s do are ment to be pretty good if you can't make it out for a meal.

Exactly. Other half just bought me tea and toast in bed. He has hurt his back and struggling to walk at the moment. Bringing the breakfast tray up three floors was a labour of love and didn't cost a penny!

The. Only people making valentines day a chore or expensive are those who think they have to pay through the nose for it.

I saw some huge beautiful bouquets in tesco for £20. There were cheap ones too think there was a chocolate and flower set for £12 albeit the flowers belong to a grave yard but still

I actually think it’s important

It’s so easy to take the people we love and see everyday for granted so it’s nice to do something special it’s also why there’s things like birthdays and anniversaries to celebrate

You don’t have to buy into the commercialisation of it all to do something special for the person you love

Who says you need to spend money?

Effort is worth so much more than anything that can be bought!

Romance is a beautiful thing, that takes a little thought rather than a lot of spends, if you can't see that it's your ignorance I'm afraid.

I believe in it because well, it’s today and I can’t deny it exists.

However we don’t spend money on each other - I’ve never been a fan. Probably because my birthday was yesterday and I’m selfish and like all the attention on me.

Valentine's Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face fealty. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit muddled

Though no one has pinpointed the exact origin of the holiday, one good place to start is ancient Rome, where men hit on women by, well, hitting them.

From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia. The men sacrificed a goat and a dog, then whipped women with the hides of the animals they had just slain.

The Roman romantics "were d*unk. They were naked," says Noel Lenski, a historian at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them, Lenski says. They believed this would make them fertile.

The brutal fete included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be, um, coupled up for the duration of the festival — or longer, if the match was right.

The ancient Romans may also be responsible for the name of our modern day of love. Emperor Claudius II executed two men — both named Valentine — on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine's Day.

Later, Pope Gelasius I muddled things in the 5th century by combining St. Valentine's Day with Lupercalia to expel the pagan rituals. But the festival was more of a theatrical interpretation of what it had once been. Lenski adds, "It was a little more of a d*unken revel, but the Christians put clothes back on it. That didn't stop it from being a day of fertility and love."

Thankyou Google
