Scotland - Aberdeen

On channel 4 just now. Who is watching?

I will say most of what I see I do actually agree with, as I do it myself.

I get bored with food easily, so sometimes just a few mouthful and I am either full or bored of what I am eating.

I am a total waste of time and money taking me out for dinner, unless it is tapas etc, I didn't always used to be this way, it's just as life and age has crept up on me in the latter years. It's just who I am and I don't see it changing, does anyone else see the same pattern in themselves?

I found it interesting, but looking forward to later programmes to see if the same research pans out as tonights………

Being slim is healthy - how many fat people do you see walking around at 80?

I feel when I was in my twenties, I was at least a stone heavier on average, I do watch what I eat but not religiously in anyway, I just get bored with food, and feel full up quite quickly.

How did I manage eat 3 chocolate bars a night I have no idea! (maybe just on a weekend) lol

Really interesting as I used to walk miles a day in my job and never put weight on yet ate loads. Desk bound now but still walk at least an half an hour a day and holding weight. Be interesting to see if male and female bodies react the same.

Eat icecream you will add fat. Your body can do nothing but add fat eating it.

Most people can eat as much clean food as they like without adding weight, but no one can eat man made food like icecream and doughnuts in large amounts and avoid adding fat. Your body simply can do nothing else but add the whole portion as fat, same with any high carb/fat combination food.

As long as you 80/20 your food you will be healthy and not starving yourself but eating when hungry. Got to have some cheat meal every now and again. Couple movement or exercise to the mix.

I hate to dispel your theory, but one female basically had full fat cream every night with a pudding but was still within her calorie count by being on her feet all day!

Well except thats just not true as demonstrated by the numerous people who've done things like doughnut diets tk prove it doesnt matter what you eat but the calories in it

I havent watched it yet but the basics are calories in verses calories used. You have to eat 3000 calories more than you use to put on 1lb or lose one.

I am the opposite, op. Used to bear no interest in food. I would eat anything, anywhere and anyhow. And getting older I started to enjoy flavours more, appreciating different combinations, enjoying the experience hence making sure I took the time and putting a little bit of decorum into it. It’s far from being every meal but it is possible to make one meal a special experience and enjoy it that much more. Fresh, good quality products prepared with care will taste differently.

It’s pretty much the same for sex!

I've also met fat people who lived well into their 90s and beyond! Yet my thin uncle had a heart attack before he turned 40.

Fat isn't always unhealthy and thin isn't always healthy.

I lose weight easily and gain it easily because of my body type.

"I didn't always used to be this way, it's just as life and age has crept up on me in the latter years. It's just who I am and I don't see it changing "

Bit of a tangent, but I thought this was an interesting juxtaposition. You can see that a change has occurred, but can't envisage further change.

Have your tastes changed at the same time?

We've found as we get older we've had to reduce our food intake as we get less active. Sex with other people is our excuse to keep our weight down. A lot more enjoyable than going to the gym. The wife says it's the healthy option.

It's really not. I've dated two guys who were like human dustbins when it came to food but struggled to put on weight. I once asked one if he was okay as he hadn't eaten all his dinner and he said he'd had a whole large dominoes before coming round as he'd forgotten my mum was making us dinner and didn't want to be rude. He still ate most of it. I honestly don't know how he did it.

I didnt watch it, so have no idea of the findings but speaking for a very, very truthful personal point, I are anything and everything without so much as a care about it from the age of 18 or so, I’ve had three babies, and I’ve always been really active, I’ve had the same diet style all my life, as in, I have pretty much eaten the same foods or there abouts, I was that person, the one people used to say ‘ oh she eats what she likes and is still thin’ I then hit 40 and never realised until it was too late that my body or I’m guessing my metabolism has changed I have put on in my eyes so much weight, I’ve grown big boobs ( which I hate) others still say I look thin, I don’t feel it, I now eat as little as possible, I do more exercise than ever, I work as hard as ever, but still nope it won’t come off I have begged dr’s for help, I’ve cried and cried but this last 6 months I’ve accepted that this is me, I’ve had all the blood tests and it’s purely metabolism, there’s nothing that is going to change me now, so I’m going to have to work twice as hard as ever to stay the same, I guess it’s karma for all the years of never needing to care it’s really hard to accept but I am who I am, my hubby loves every inch, especially the boobs like I say, just personal experience, no reason or ryhme, just my take in my body Mrs blue eyes

Studies proved it's far more important be slim than healthy the associated illnesses that come with being overweight like blood pressure and heart rate certain cancers also pressure on joints has been proven that you might live a long life the end is often plagued with illnesses and pain.

This just a fact and it is down to all of us to be responsible for her own health moving into old age.

Didnt see programme but I can understand some of what has been written here. I lived homeless recently, still had my work etc but nothing else and it exaggerated something I never realised, that on a personal basis, in other words, just me, not others, I am not happy about being anything other than slim. I reduced my body intake massively and cut long story short, my stomach shrank. Now back in a house I still can t eat a normal sized meal, i see food as nothing more than fuel, and my friends may have been right about where I was heading because if I eat another persons version of a normal meal I will not eat following day.. The mind and body are interesting in their workings.

Definitely not the case with my step father, he can eat 8 chocolate eclairs and 2 apple turnovers in lessthan an hour, he has very very little exercise, yet if anything he is underweight.

I on the other hand put on 2lbs just sniffing a doughnut

Everybody’s different, I lost weight for no reason, doctor just said eat more calories, they were surprised when I told them how much I eat in a day (lots and not all good) I never put weight on at Christmas (usually loose a few lb) or 2 week all inclusive holidays, not an ounce even though constant cocktails and food, so think my body works back to front.

Smoothies are supposed to be good for weight gain with fruit being full of sugar your body stores it as fat as it can’t burn it all off, unless very active.

And they say to loose weight drinking cold water through the day helps.

Didn’t see the programme but sounds interesting so will catch up.

To put on weight is hard for people like you and I. It costs me more money and more time.

My perfect eating would be out of sink with set times. Breakfast/dinner/tea. I would naturally eat when I want and what I want. Like you, i don’t have to avoid any type of food, I just don’t eat the amounts others do. And certainly not all day long. I do not confess to have a healthy diet, I just fit into a slim catagory.

May I add that being slim in itself isn't necessarily healthy. Slim people can have unhealthy diets and high cholesterol.

If they aren't eating vegetables or fruit and not exercising regularly they are at risk of health issues too.

Hmmm, well, according to my fitbit I walked 26 miles in two days in Prague, was 1000 calories under one day and 700 under the next and still put on 4lb, so maybe it isn't quite that simple all the time.

I know exactly why - I ate carbs.

"I havent watched it yet but the basics are calories in verses calories used. You have to eat 3000 calories more than you use to put on 1lb or lose one.

Hmmm, well, according to my fitbit I walked 26 miles in two days in Prague, was 1000 calories under one day and 700 under the next and still put on 4lb, so maybe it isn't quite that simple all the time.

I know exactly why - I ate carbs."

Or you ate/drank way more than you recorded.

Your weight is also largley dependant on when you drank/peed last too remember.

Well yeah thats 1,200 calories in wine alone. Its not that its "carbs" its that you drank over half the calories a person needs in a day a night on top of any food.

"

What you dont see is these people may binge massivly per meal but they dont constantly snack or each much between them.

"

Exactly.

People that are overweight constantly graze and simply eat more calories than they burn off.

I am very active - but I eat and drink too much.

I eat in-between meals and love wine.

It takes dedication

Nope, I was accurate in my recording. Your body's ability to handle carbs depends on your insulin sensitivity and several other factors.

"Being slim is healthy - how many fat people do you see walking around at 80?

Not much good when you're riddled with Dementia and can't appreciate it tho is it?

May I add that being slim in itself isn't necessarily healthy. Slim people can have unhealthy diets and high cholesterol.

If they aren't eating vegetables or fruit and not exercising regularly they are at risk of health issues too.

"

Yup, slim people may or may not be healthy, fat people with good genes may live a long life - but a lot of excess weight is ALWAYS detrimental to our health.

"Eat icecream you will add fat. Your body can do nothing but add fat eating it.

Most people can eat as much clean food as they like without adding weight, but no one can eat man made food like icecream and doughnuts in large amounts and avoid adding fat. Your body simply can do nothing else but add the whole portion as fat, same with any high carb/fat combination food."

"Clean" food has fat too?

Ok...but to gain 4lb from "carbs" would require you to eat nearly 4lb of carbs.

In your mind if you didnt eat this extra 4lb of mass that now physicaly makes up your body where did it come from?

Just how did the carbs working with your insulin and other factors go from 400ish grams to nearly 1800 grams?

...Up on the Downs

An abstract, for interest.....

Glob Health Action. 2017;10(1):1289650. doi: 10.1080/16549716.2017.1289650.

Is the calorie concept a real solution to the obesity epidemic?

Camacho S1,2, Ruppel A1.

Author information

Abstract

BACKGROUND:

The obesity epidemic has been growing steadily across the whole world, and so far not a single country has been able to reverse it. The cause of obesity is stated by the World Health Organization as an energy imbalance between calories consumed and calories expended. However, growing evidence suggests that the calorie imbalance concept may not be sufficient to manage and reverse the obesity epidemic.

OBJECTIVE:

To discuss the use of the calorie imbalance concept and its elements as a tool for weight management as well as its possible negative consequences and implications for public health, with the aim to point toward the need of an updated concept for causes of obesity. This update should guide public health interventions more efficiently to limit obesity by preventing weight gain or promoting weight loss.

METHODS:

This is a literature reviews based on a semi-structured approach to determine the material to be examined.

RESULTS:

After revisiting general facts about fat generation and accumulation, we propose an updated concept for the causes of obesity including diet composition and hormonal regulation of fat metabolism.

You are assuming a couple of things though - that the standard 'rate of burn' in a fitbit programme is accurate for everyone regardless of their hormonal and metabolic status, and secondly, that diet composition does not affect water homeostasis in the body.

Without offending anyone....

We can stop the metabolism debate immediately....

People have become billionaires because of people being overweight....

Pharmaceutical companies and mobility scooter companies are growing because the population in the western world is getting fatter...

There are new drugs coming on the market every year for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes...

The pharmaceutical companies want people to live longer overweight because it’s pure profits...

Do you know what would happen if everyone started eating healthy and exercising?

I’d be homeless and out of a job....

Just to put this in context... I specialize in Asian economics.... people in Asia spend more on Beauty aides than healthcare...

This is not a knock on anyone overweight or body shaming.... these are just economic facts..

"Yeah, I’m watching it. I can eat what I like and don’t seem to be able to put on weight, I’ve been trying to put on a stone but it’s not happening, you need to eat more its that simple

What you dont see is these people may binge massivly per meal but they dont constantly snack or each much between them.

"

He did. When on holiday I spent a week solidly with him. He would eat constantly it's insane.

The other I mentioned is a guy I'm dating now and he's always offering me crisps and chocolate and seems to think I hardly eat. I guess compared to him I do haha.

You don't eat as kuch as you think/dont acount for the fact you need to eat more just to maintain as you get heavier.

Either buy the ingredients or just buy a big tub of chocolate mass gainers thats about 1500kcal a shake and have that a day in addition to your regular food.

But you'll more than likley find you'd need to strictly regulate your bornal food or youll just naturally eat less to compensate for the massive calories from the shake and stay the same as you have in the past.

Othwrwise just snack constantly on high calories stuff ans youll be fat in no time

It doesn't always work like that. My Ex was exactly the same , eats what he wants and puts nothing on. Admittedly he used to in a very active job so I used to think it was that, but then he went to a sedentary job, still eats anything and hasn't put on an an ounce and yes, he snacks as well as big meals.

Measure his body temperature. There can be a reasonable difference there. Otherwise it is again much more likley that he just eats less than you think. Hes at a stable intake vs output level.

You also kinda show a big flaw in just using scales every so often as your measurement. "hasnt put on an ounce" he could go up or down a whole Lb based on if he had a piss before or after he got on the scales.

You really won't believe anyone when they tell you what they know from experience will you. Living with someone and watching what they put down their throat is not something you can say wasn't happening.

Maybe never take everything literally, the ounce thing is just a saying.

Will clarify, the man never ever weighed himself so whether he had had a piss or not wouldn't have mattered...he just went on the clothes he wore, they never got tight.

I watched the programme. I didn't rate it much. I found some of the reasoning from so called 'experts' somewhat 'airy-fairy.

It could be summed up as 'eat less move more' .......

I'll watch next week though to see if there is anything worthy.

Absolutely the same. I top out at 10 1/2. And that’s the gym and stuffing my face until I burst. Some people are made slim it’s just the way it is.

It's just not fair!

When I was a size 10 and a half stone I had to literally starve.

I barely ate anything other than chicken and broccoli and eggs.

I was miserable!

I’ve said this before to someone else. For everyone who struggles to lose it, there’s someone struggling to put weight on.

I think the same, without cramming my mouth with fat/protein even when I felt sick of eating. I can’t build muscle mass.

I’d like to be bigger....it’s just not fair.

I still can't help but think that if you mirrored my diet for a month you would gain weight!"

And the opposite might be true. Just a thought.

But just read the but where I said eating until I felt sick, my body just doesn’t crave the calories I need to gain weight. I’m sure I’m not alone with that too.

"Yeah, I’m watching it. I can eat what I like and don’t seem to be able to put on weight, I’ve been trying to put on a stone but it’s not happening,

Have you tried sitting around, eating cake, crisps, and fizzy pop all day long, while moaning about your hormonal issue?"

That wasn't very nice Clem.

I just can't be arsed anymore

I enjoy good food and I like wine that's why I'm fat.

Someone that eats a sausage roll from greggs and a large dominos pepperoni pizza every day is eating around 2500 cals a day.

Throw a lunch of something other shit food in there like a Mc donalds quarter pounder with cheese.

That brings it to around 3000 ish cals a day.

If you're a 6 foot labourer you're going to burn most of that off.

I like nice good food and nice wine in too big portions.

It makes my calorie count just as high if not higher.

I'm 5ft 7 and I'm not a labourer .

There are other factors but it really is this simple for most people's bodies.

"Being slim is healthy - how many fat people do you see walking around at 80?

In my previous job as a community care worker? Plenty.

Just google the oldest living people on earth and you will not see any fat people....

I’ve lived in Japan and the people on the island of Okinawa are some of the oldest living people on earth and trust me they are not fat....

On a side note... short people tend live longer and definitely age better....

Giant people not so much....

Now I know this is Fab and people must join the body beautiful brigade....

But please let common sense rain and not post non sense about fat people living longer than slim people....

If you stop the nonsense, I will.

You can take the butchers advice that the steak is fresh or you can stick your head up a cows ass to find out for yourself....

I must rather listen to the butcher....

I'm vegan. Do greengrocers give advice ?

Aww Granny, you should be old enough to know the world isn’t a nice place....

Behind every new social cause people are making a tremendous amount of money....

Overweight people are a goldmine and will continue to be , unless something changes....

I’m be fine , your national health system will pay out the nose for medications and mobility scooters.....

I’ll retire in 4 years and buy a private island somewhere...."

Who will you spout shit to on your island ?

OK I watched it...it seems although the people were eating what they wanted , it was still within calories that would not make them put on weight so not over eating. ( although for what one ate I would have said they were more calories than was counted )

The old saying of eat a little of what you fancy wasn't quite there as there seemed a lot of chocolate but who is anyone to argue if they want to use up their calories on goodies.

Diabesity is set to bankrupt the NHS. Identifying the problem does not solve it though.

I didn't quite get it either, hence why I am looking forward to future programmes to see if they can back it up (or maybe I over estimate calories)

I don't know why they've called it a secret life as if there's some mysterious thing that slim people do or eat that only they know about.

I do that I think, maybe because I have to really watch what I eat to not put on any weight so I go for a higher figure if I don't know the calories. But that big chunk of chocolate and chocolate pud with cream is probably half of what they said she had had in the day

I would say you sound definitely like the other girl going by your OP...ie a couple of mouthfuls and then you get bored

"I didn’t see the show but I can understand some of these people.....

I basically live on 6 venti coffees a day , 1 protein shake and 2 bottles of wine per night....

I honestly forget to eat some days and can go 3 days without eating any carbs....

I think I’m the only person in the world that hates chocolates and any candy....

But I like to chew gum.... "

Have you ever had an ECG.

Loads of caffeine is bad.

I agree, I definitely resonate with the second person studied, I just pick at things, I will buy expensive steak etc and also do a decent Sunday roast, even though I know I will not even eat half of what is on my plate, Even though I know all of that I will still cook the full family meal, because I want the choice, even though I know most will go to waste, but it is difficult to cook for one without having to buy for four for a Sunday dinner

Near Wells

I've always been quite slim. Although I eat what I want, I generally eat healthy food and I don't drink much alcohol.

Like one of the ladies on the show, I eat small portions slowly. Not on purpose, its just the way I eat and I'm always on the go, hardly ever sit down.

Exactly.

They are within their calories.

There is no secret to being slim.

I still might watch it though

For most of us no...I have to watch the calories to not put on weight. However, my ex and a friend can eat much more than me and never seem to put on any.

Yes yes I know people are going to say they must be more active than you / they don't eat as much as they say they do BUT this is MY experience of living with someone who ate like a horse and ended up in a sedentary job and did no exercise apart from his tea drinking arm

Katie Hopkins did an experiment once and said she would put on 3 stone to lose it again. In the first month she ate a huge amount of food and did no exercise or running round after her kids etc and had only put on a couple of pounds, so she went for advice and the expert on the show said some people just don't put on weight as fast as others / need more intake than others. She did eventually put the weight on but she had to up her intake so high she was nearly sick.
