"If you could have participated in the D Day landings in WW2 what group of any nations military would you have wanted to have experienced it with? "
None of them, the d day landing were brutal and in the words of many survivors; like hell.

Having first hand experience in war. I'd say none of the above. Bit of a strange question if you ask me.
If it's gaming only, I'd say the Germans, given their strong defensive position. |

"Gurkhas. Just so I could be reminded every day after the war how pointless war is, and how the people you lay your lives down for don't really care, unless they are your family."
How would picking them specifically remind you of that? They volunteer to serve like we do. |

I'd agree with the not caring part though. Only day this country gives a fuck is on Remembrance Day. Which is why I despise the day. |

"Okay, Native American then. For the same reason." A good point some fought in WW2 and for many they were not highly regarded among their own nation..but they would recieve some respect as veterans.

I know what you're trying to say. You've got to try and understand how it may sound to others, especially those of us who've seen war.
Isn't there only one answer? The side that won.
DDay was horrific, makes what I went through pale into insignificance. Why you'd want to imagine which side you'd like to pick is beyond me. Most people were lucky if they made it off the landing platforms, let alone the beach.
I knew a man in the nursing home I worked in a long time ago. He was forced out of his nursing profession. Into a locked train carriage, sent down to the seaside, frogmarched into an amphibious tank and loaded onto a ship. He had no choice in the matter. That man stormed the beach 7 times that day, to help the injured and dying men on the beach. Not to kill anyone.
I'd be that man. No country. No Army. Just one dude doing his best to make the world a better place for the little guys. |

He was not disrespecting them.
He is honouring them, the survivors has stated how bad it was to be there, clearly not wanting to wish that position upon anyone.
So I fully agree with him, why the fuck would anyone want to choose the experience it? Regardless of what the fighting was for and what it meant to be victorious does not change the fact that even the people who were there would not want to relive such a brutal part of history. |

Where did I say they regret it? I said they would never wish it upon anyone to have been there, nor would they enjoy to relive it.
Doesn't change the fact they are proud to have done their part for the cause. Its possible to do both. |

Hitler's all-conquering stormtroopers 'felt invincible because of crystal meth-style drug Pervitin.
The methamphetamine-based drug Pervitin was manufactured from 1937 onwards by the Nazis and distributed among the armed forces
Hitler’s armies carried out their “Blitzkrieg” invasions of Poland and France while high on a version of crystal meth which kept them wide awake, feeling euphoric and invincible, says a new book about the Nazis’ use of drugs during the Second World War |

The use of drugs to sustain troops has been widespread by many countries including the UK throughout history.
I'm not sure it was the norm though! |

In reading about the US Airborne travelling to Normandy many took a pill which happened to make them drowsy I recall it was for air sickness...but I have thought it may have had different uses. Benzedrine in Vietnam taken to help people stay awake. Drugs in war makes an interesting topic. |

warriors from birth...and if by posting such a question It opens up such discourse fine by me. I wish you well and your words are enlightening. |

To all veterans do not presume every civilian has not read, considered, had compassion and talked to veterans. In asking such a question about a historic event
It does not come from a careless attitude, but from a inquiring mind. Which is often how books get written, planets get realigned, etc etc etc. |

I wasn't presuming anything. The amateur history buff in me understands the difference if your question is gaming strategy related. The way you've worded it, the way in which you seem to be defending yourself; makes us think youre asking us to imagine the reality.
That brings up all sorts of bad stuff up. Like politics! And a whole host of ghosts out the closet, for a great many people. For Civvies and Squaddies alike.
A public forum isn't really the best place to get a positive reaction about the kind of question you're asking, unless it's a Forum for gaming related or military history enthusiasts.
You're inviting comments from Humanists, Hippies, Conservatives, Labours, Proffessors, Clueless, Veterans, Loved ones, Widows, Orphans, Family.
Tread delicately or word your question and answers more clearly. A simple mistake can change the context in the blink of an eye. |
