I've been having a very interesting conversation with a friend today about a few things, and in a very roundabout way I realised that even though she's a very prolific forum user and very popular, she never posts threads. This set me to musing, why don't more people post threads?
So dear non thread posters, why don't you start threads? |

I don’t like to draw attention to myself, plus I think it’s a bit needy to start threads, I’d rather just contribute and pass on my wit and wisdom via other peoples musing. |

I used to start threads regularly but it’s sooooo time consuming. If I start a thread I think it’s only polite to interact with those that take the time to respond and I mean to EVERYONE that posts |

I start threads as I think of something and think that would be an interesting post. My hubby doesn’t do the forums either, lots don’t who I chat to, one said they didn’t have time and I must have too much time on my hands |

I've only started one thread & was worried no-one would comment on it, thankfully that wasn't the case but that's my main reason. Also if I've got a query I'll search the forums & there's usually already a previous post about it so no need to start a new thread. |

I like people who start a thread, then immediately go offline for 2 days while it’s all kicked off and someone else has made a part 2 and 3 riding on their coat tails. |

I've only started 2 threads, both were things I was genuinely interested in discussing and I enjoyed the conversation. Was time consuming though as the responses brought up other questions. |

If I think of something interesting to make a thread about I will.
I think for a lot of people though they feel it's not worth the effort I'm attempting to do so when it goes nowhere after 2 or so replies. Almost a fear. |

I used to post threads regularly but things changed for me. I inadvertently caused a problem for other forum users with one of my threads. Got flamed. The. The next few threads I posted got acrimonious. Other issues were also going on....
So I hid my profile- left for a few months - when I came back I reinvented my forum persona as a self deprecating fool with virtually nothing useful to say and very rarely post a thread anymore.
I don’t take anything particularly seriously on here. Didn’t meet for five years and just used the forum and site as an escape and outlet for my exhibitionistic tendencies. |

I can see that point, I do wonder if some people consider it as a kind of popularity or self esteem thing; if their post drops without a trace then its a bit of a 'knock' |

Lots of reasons why I (or others ) May not want to be the one who starts a thread.

A myriad of reasons.
Sometimes I just want to focus my creative energy on a few poor sods.
It might bomb.
If it's a subject close to my heart, I don't know if I want to open it up to twattish responses.
And sometimes I can't be arsed. |

I occasionally post lighthearted threads, very rarely though, as I see too often people turn on an op and twist the thread into something it wasn't meant to be.
Off the top of my head I remember a middle button game, road trip playlist suggestions and what crisps to eat on a sandwich. And i still managed to get a few snidey remarks on the sandwich one |

Another example, some people pick on certain posters. When Shag says he's been discussing something with a friend, lots of people pick on him, asking who the friend is, if they exist and if the conversation ever happened.
I've quoted your OP as you mentioned a friend and it reminded me. Not saying you're one of the people who pick. |

There’s the best days. When conversations flow into others. Just feeling like it’s effortless rather than forcing something to talk about. . Just like sitting down face to face.
I love lots to talk about. |

No I agree, it is shitty. A part of me thinks that giving in to the trolls and shitty comments is exactly what they want so I'm less inclined to do that. However, fighting battles isn't why people join fab (mostly) |

Or even leave the forums...? I can completely understand why some don’t and won’t.
And feeling like your stepping in the popular kids tor’s is a big factor.
Imagine starting a thread and someone having a go because it’s like the one they normally would do. (I remember that)
There has been some serious sulking when someone starts a thread that ‘belongs’ to someone else, a whole different type of lamppost pissing "
It's all very funny, there have been plenty of threads that i started but others have taken over. I actually started the phwoar threads, I'm not bothered! |

I’ve only started a couple of threads in my time. One was to say hello and the other was to start a good morning thread.
I really don’t feel a need to do it. I enjoy joining in where I want to and ignoring the rest.
The trouble is that there are too many people spoiling for a fight. They cannot wait to dig at folk, so many judgy people and it’s not just what they say, it’s the way the put it. I know we all interpret things differently but it’s very clear when someone is being an arse about things.
What I do know though is that I wouldn’t deliberately overlook people that comment. You’re not going to catch anything by acknowledging a comment and responding to people doesn’t mean we want to get in your knickers, believe it or not |

"I've been having a very interesting conversation with a friend today about a few things, and in a very roundabout way I realised that even though she's a very prolific forum user and very popular, she never posts threads. This set me to musing, why don't more people post threads?
So dear non thread posters, why don't you start threads?
Another example, some people pick on certain posters. When Shag says he's been discussing something with a friend, lots of people pick on him, asking who the friend is, if they exist and if the conversation ever happened.
I've quoted your OP as you mentioned a friend and it reminded me. Not saying you're one of the people who pick.

I’d love to know who started all the long-standing threads. I like hearing about the characters of the forum over the years. Also the threads that everyone remembers usually for all the wrong reasons but bring a smile when folk remember them. I’ve a few that always make me chuckle when they’re mentioned |

That's an interesting point that you make at the end there about commenting and chatting. Just because someone replies to you or messages it doesn't mean that anything is going to happen! |

Sometimes I just wonder if people don’t want to reply because the person may ‘get the wrong idea’. On the other hand, they manage to respond to someone they’re into.
The forums need to be inclusive if they’re to be fun and interesting in my opinion. |

Ahhh the ‘just reply to the hotties’ technique or the ‘opportunist’ technique, those that fire off a pm on the back of a thread blowing smoke up someone’s arse in order to procure a meet. I tell ya it’s mighty complicated posting on the forum didn’t someone once do an etiquette thread? |

"The very first thread I posted, the forum regulars bitched at me for asking a question that had been asked before and called me stupid for not doing a forum search.
People still do that. All the fucking time.
You didn't let it stop you though. I expect the 'regulars' aren't here anymore. There'll be a new set of 'regulars'.
But was it a stupid question?..... "

I love starting a thread, but I'll openly admit I like the attention
I've started light hearted threads, asking for advice threads, but my favourite thread was one I posted on my previous profile called 'If Authors covered books the way Musicians covered songs ...' I thought it was a really good topic but there were only a few that commented which surprised me as I thought people would appreciate something different to the snog/suck/stroke/bump/fuck/drink kind of threads..... but I guess it's quality over quantity as all the replies had me giggling |

"My threads are not sexy, or argumentative enough to be popular, so I bother.
I'm neither, I'm just curious"
I've started if you and none of them are sexy or argumentative and they do quite well.
Mine are just a bit random and I like ones that are not likely to cause offence and one for everyone to feel they can contribute to. |

I remember someone constantly telling new people to do a thread search before starting a thread.
My response to that was that if I started a thread it would be to interact with people who were actually online, not to dredge up ghosts of the past, and that people have differing opinions and those opinions can change.
Not forgetting the amount of UNLOS profiles on old threads. |

My threads can involve vegetables and random thoughts for the day.
No one wants to converse on them, because they don't evolve into an argument.
The politics forum is quite popular. |

I’ve seen how seemingly harmless posts can be misconstrued, either deliberately or by accident (maybe poor wording)

I rarely write them. I feel obliged to reply to every person who responds, because they have taken time out to comment on my thread. For that reason, i don't do it often, as it's time consuming. I prefer to just comment, rather than be the OP |
