Icon of the 20th Century. Alan Turing

It was a no brainer in my eyes.

"We wouldn't be having this conversation on here if it were not for Turings imagination. "

How’s that then?

He was the lead mind behind cracking the codex used by the nazis granted, he built a mechanical computer to crack the code, granted that too,

But without him we wouldn’t be using the internet???

Stretch way too far on that one..

His story is really sad too chemical castration by an intolerant society

But not an icon in my view, and it’s only my opinion....

Totally agree, Turing is a hero of these shores and deserves all the recognition that comes his way!! Just a shame he had to be castigated the way he was!! That's it I'm off to watch the Imitation Game right now!!!

Without him the 1st steps to the computer would never have been reached. Therefore in the grand scheme of things it is possible the internet may never of come around. It's not to bigger stretch really!!

I think you might want to read up on the Nazi attitude to individuals who did not subscribe to their sexual norm.

Hundreds of homosexuals who were members of the Party were murdered, simply because of their sexuality.

Turing was a genius and, despite this, treated extraordinarily by our own governments who, similarly, adhered to a societal norm (although not killing those that did not conform).

The breaking of the Enigma codes was a turning point in WWII; I doubt that the United Kingdom would have survived an invasion, and long distance support from the US would not have mitigated this.

Invasion would have resulted in the application of Nazi doctrine to the UK population; Jews, gypsies, homosexuals, lawyers, transvestites, civil leaders, the outspoken and the resistors would have been relegated to extermination camps.

So, no; Turing's genius has allowed subsequent generations this freedom.

Never? Really?

I think that's a bit of a stretch.

So you're suggesting that NOBODY else would have EVER made those steps instead.

Circumstances at the time dictated a need to crack the Enigma code. If it hadn't been him, someone else would have presented a solution. Would it have been the same? Maybe not, but inevitably we would have gotten to where we are with computer technology one way or another.

Of course, having said all this, I don't intend to diminish his accomplishments whatsoever. Indeed a great man who didn't get the recognition he deserved during his lifetime.

Why does there only have to be one? Surely there can be several icons of the 20th century?

My reading of it was that the Op was nominating 1 person to be included in a larger list.
