Yep. The massive area that is mainly Siberia is largely tundra, thinly populated and extremely hard to actually do anything with! No other bugger wanted it that bad so Russia thought "Yeah, we'll have that..."
As the area contained so few local people they wouldn't have put up much resistance even if they wanted to. And largely their way of life is the same as it was previously.

"Belgium is smaller than I realised too."
Having worked in Belguim, it's a strange place in many ways. In size it's small, but their culture differs hugely between North and South Belguim, much more than ours does. They actually speak two different languages, the dutch heavy Flemish the main one in the North whilst the Walloons in the South tend to speak French?
Also try finding a bloody cash machine! They're about a mile and a half apart even in big cities such as Antwerp which is crap on a night out ha! The resson behind this is that income tax is so fucking obscenely high that a massive amount of jobs over there pay cash in hand otherwise a lot of people wouldn't be able to actually live? So cash machines aren't needed by a massive amount of people and as such they're a lot more sparse.

"Many people don't realise that the US and Russia are actually neighbours. Eastern Siberia and Alaska are only @55 miles apart across the Bering Strait.." Yes but to connect the two countries you would need around 2600 miles of new road and 3 bridges over a very difficult terrain.

A lot of maps are confusing when talking about scale. You may have been looking at mercators projection. Try searching for a Gall-Peters projection of the globe as it gives a more realistic representation of the areas of each country. Doesnt make the largest country, by area any smaller though. |

In days of old, inhabiting colr areas was difficult to say the least. So no, they didnt want to conquer those landmasses.
Or if they did claim the land it got ignored as it was pointless.

"The US bought Alaska from Russia.
For how much and why?"
To turn a massive land border into a 55 mile wide wet one. A bit like the English Channel is to mainland Europe. |

Nah, that’s a stationary shop. I know the vikings invented the gel point pen, but couldn’t do the same day delivery, hence Russia and stuff |

The hole would be filled by the sea. So the seas around the world wouldn’t be as deep, and we might be able to walk to France |

It’s not actually quite as big as it looks on a 2D map due to distortion caused by the way a 3D globe is changed to look in 2D, using map projections.
So countries closer to the equator look proportionally closer to their actual size, but countries further from the equator usually look bigger than they actually are.
To see what an effect this can have, look at Greenland and India in a world map. Greenland looks way bigger, but India is about 50% bigger than Greenland.

"Just been looking at a map of Europe, and the size of each country, and wondering why Russia is so big."
Because at 17,125,200 square kilometres (6,612,100 sq mi), Russia is the largest country in the world by area, covering more than one-eighth of the Earth's inhabited land area.
If Canada nicked some of northern USA it would be even bigger.

But still massively disproportionate on most world maps. India is around 3.3m sq km, but looking at most world maps a lot more than 5-6 Indias would fit inside Russia. |

Anyway fuck Russia.
Italy looks like a dominatrix' boot clad leg, with Sicily probably it's submissive bitch, puckering up to kiss it. Whereas Russia looks like fuck all except perhaps a dollop of some moist stuff that has been dumped on the floor.
Therefore I much prefer Italy, me.
What have any Russians possibly got to say to that?

I've also noticed that when you look at the combined countries of Finland and Sweden that they look remarkably like a floppy cock, conplete with balls.
Russia needs to get it's collective fingers out of it's arses and start to get creative with it's land borders or risk falling even further behind in this regard.

There are thats why Hitler invaded.
Russia with its 18,000+ nukes though is very safe from the usa.
The usa in its concerns about how far Russia and China has got ahead ('china isnt a signatory) jist pulled out of the intermediate range treaty which fucks us in europe as were the ones in the firing line of those missiles.
