A Galaxy far far away

Two things I wouldn’t skimp on in regards to a car. Brakes and tyres.

Hope he wasn't the taxi driver we got the other night.. He was terrifying, actually considered getting out and walking across the motorway to the pub.. It would have been safer

No have used them for over 30 years as long as you have a reliable dealer and you inspect them before they go on the car

Not worth it really you don't always know why they came off and at this time of year you want max grip so better off buying new budget tyres if on a fixed spend.

Depends what car you have, on my previous cars I used them and they were always absolutely sound, the one I have now is 300bhp though and I shred through cheap tyres like it’s going out of fashion, have to use decent ones

Part worn premium tyres will g8ve a lot more grip than brand new budget ones.

Part worn tyres have usually only done probably a couple of thousand miles and have usually been changed because the original user switched to a different brand or swapped to bigger wheels etc

I thought about this too.

Provided you get a reputable fitter

That's not true though most 2nd hand tyres come from overseas where legal limits are higher.

Tyres have a finite life they crack as the rubber gets old and brittle.

Tyre technology is changing all the time so newer budget ones with more tread will nearly always give better grip.

A lot get imported from Germany where the tread limits are higher ...so it’s kinda like recycling ...why throw them away when you can get more out of them

Wouldn’t chance it, you don’t know the history of the tyre. Buy some mid range tyres and don’t look back

I used to use them years ago, but the price seems to be a bit higher than it used to be especially if you pay someone for fitting on top.

I use a new medium branded tyre nowadays.

A new set of tyres always makes the car steer lovely and true and brake nice and straight. Mismatched and different levels of wear take that away and always feels worse on the front.

I’d sooner but a decent middle of the road new tyre personally. And change them in pairs.

My dad used to buy part worn tyres for his cars.

I have bought a set of tyres that had done a practice session for my R6, they did quite well for 8 months.

that's a v good point never thought of that I've got a lil van that just does short trips round town mainly and flat out prob mite reach sixty in an hour or so if down hill I put them in that no worries but my car that' has couple hundred horses and does thirty thousand miles plus a year on motorways at up to 70mph no more lol I wouldn't use them ever on

is that correct surely if so the day after we've put new ones on we'd all have to ring them up and say there part worn now

nothing wrong with a second hand car esp if it's got full service history

and if you buy a car with badly worn tyres or tread wearing on only part of the tyre there'is obviously a problem steer clear

...Up on the Downs

I'd been buying mid-range tyres for a few years and needed a new pair every year. Now I've gone back to Continentals and only bought two in 5 years, they last for bloody ever! Just bought the second pair now.

A world all of his own

When I was in my apprentiship and couldn't rub 2 pennies together I used to buy part works all the time, but that was also on old, low powered cars.

Now that I'm in a more fortunate position I don't. After all, they're quite literally the only thing keeping you in contact with the road.

Or it could be a simple problem like wheel alignment ???

I`ve seen 2 in the last 8 months with bulges on the inside wall (oo, errr matron), so make sure you check it over after its been inflated, before they put it on.

Its very hard to take them back after you've driven away, as they`ll argue any bulges have been done by you.

Make sure they're decent makes too, there's a hell of a lot of Chinese/unknown tyres at part worn places now, & I`d advise you to give them a very wide berth, some are lethal in the wet. Personally I only go for Goodyear, Pirelli, Dunlop, Toyo or Continental, in that order.

Also, check for cracking of the sidewalls, or cracking between the treads, or, any localised areas of cracking on the sidewall, which could indicate a bulge that's been "fixed" (illegally) with a patch on the inside.

If they don't let you look at them properly, both before & after they`ve been put on the wheel, leave it.

The other thing that pisses me off is when they try to sell you new unknown/Chinese tyres, & tell you "they`re fine, all tyres are the same"... "No, they are most definitely not all the same, & as you`ve bullshitted me, I`m off & will never be back!"

Oh, & make sure they jack the car properly, a lot of them are monkeys who couldn't care less, & will damage your sills/floor without thinking twice.

Also don't let them use the air gun on the locknut, & tell them not to overtighten the bolts, one of my neighbours car needed a 5 foot length of scaffold tube on his wheelbrace to get the bolts off, weeks after going to a used tyre place a while back, & its bent the wheelbrace, that's something you really dont need when getting a puncture in the wild..

If a part worn tyre is fitted a stamp is set on the side saying its a part worn like someone else has said it could be they upgraded the tyres to a bigger size so could have had a deal also they need to pass a inspection and under a year old yes a tyre got a use by date of 5 years but if you got a car with run flats it needs run flats because of your insurance I've trained as a tyre fitter the top makes sells the molds to other company's like hankook in over the last 5 years gone from a budget to a mid range but then its price

Its more that no one can be sure where your part worn came from.

Is it a part worn german or is it off a wrecked car thats had some pretty out of the ordinary forces through it

For a taxi/commuting car rhats just trundling about i dont think theyre an issue, for your fun performance car or bike meh, spend the extra get nice new ones.

I'd never trust them on a bike unless it was a track bike theres just too many variables

Yeah why not! It’s only because Mrs Jones has been conned into buying new tyres as hers are getting close to the limit or a unrepairable nail has gone in (cough)

That's not true, it's only if your insurance company specifically requires it. Never had one require it in 40 years so far.

On a more serious note it all depends on the reputation of the company selling them.

It can be a false economy if you pay over the odds for tyres with little tread left(but still legal) vs new with 3/4 times more tread.
