I’ve been suffering with anxiety generally, getting knots in my stomach about nothing in particular.

I wondered what others do to help combat this? Is it a menopause thing too? As I’ve never had it before. I do have a GP appointment anyway on Friday and will ask as well.

It can definitely be related to menopause, but also from any number of other seemingly unrelated things.

I've struggled with anxiety all of my life, to varying degrees.

Deep breathing exercises, progressive relaxation, and CBT can all help.

I've found crying and hiding out under the blankets in bed useful at times (to get through it, not to improve it, whatsoever!!). I don't recommend that as a regular coping strategy...

Medications for anxiety are often addictive and only work to temporarily relieve symptoms, not make the situation any better. Still, they are great for really high anxiety and panic attacks.

Talk to your GP for referral if it's ongoing or really impacting your life! Anxiety SUCKS and getting help early on can make a big difference.

Good luck.

I worry about how I react to anxiety ..

But in seriousness .. CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) had worked for me ..

Be able to take a step back from the situation ... look at it from a different view point ... take a "helicopter" view from above ... ask yourself "can I control this or not" only worry about what is within your ability to control and manage.

Although it looks at depression more than anxiety (although there can be a link between the 2) there's a book called "Taming the Black Dog" which is a very good starting point.

You're not alone, everyone suffers the same to a degree in their life ... but it can be managed

I’ll keep an eye on this. I don’t suffer but my 12 year old does. Any tips I can pass on would be wonderful. Currently awaiting CAMHS and CBT.

Any journey has to start with the first step ...

Coping and dealing with it is that journey

And don't be afraid to take a wrong turn or 2 before finding the route that is right for you

Without sounding cliche ...

I always think of it as depression is not getting over the past, anxiety to do with the future. all natural. break it down into small steps and tackle it in a calm manner

Therapy, of various kinds, find one that works for you.

Mindfulness meditation.

Exercise: getting the physical sensations associated with anxiety on purpose (because you know they're not the end of the world). Weight lifting.

No harm in medication.

Find things that keep you calm, rituals (herbal tea, bath), things you associate with calm (lavender is commonly used as a scent trigger).

Watch for triggers and maybe keep a diary if you want to figure out where it's coming from.

I have a diffuser at home which circulate lavender which has a certain calming effect. What o do if they get it really bad will get myself out in my car and down to the beach and just try switch off. Thankfully it doesn’t happen a lot these days but there are a lot of natural calming therapy’s that do actually work. It is terrible if you get very bad attacks but all you can do is try and work through them as best you can x

I have a friend who suffered depression and terrible anxiety for years.

Nothing worked until he tried RTMS (google it I can’t explain it very well)

It completely changed his life. He’s now a completely different person from the last five years.

Hi Bronte - years ago i suffered from it - it took a long time until we figured out why i was anxious - which i think is the best starting point - try to notice a pattern of behaviours - or maybe a time slot or recurring activity that results in the anxiety coming on. I didn't know i was 'anxious' - it was my wife who spotted the pattern - and the pattern was me getting my head ready to drive the 100odd miles to pick up my kids from my previous marriage - for the three days prior to the day it would take over me. It wasn't the driving - i'm fine with that - it was the fact i was going 'there' - or seeing them / or bringing them here.

You would think that going to meet your kids would be a joyous experience and surely something that wouldn't cause problems - and for me, largely it was - but......prior to it happening i got all sneezy, and like i had a terrible head cold or allergy. It was horrendous! These symptoms would disappear as soon as i had picked them up and brought them home.

After Mrs Bag noticed the pattern i went to a (??? The forum rules won't let me type the word!!) - two sessions and she supplied me with a CD of her voice taking me through the calming procedure - and it worked! And if i need it - it still works to this day.

This kind of (??? The forum rules won't let me type the word!!) is not like you see on TV or at the theatre - it's totally different......no eating of raw onions required for success!

I found that CBT and the like didn't work for this / me - in the end i went private (£40.00 a session at the time). Glad i did now. If you want any more info, just get in touch. Hope it sorts itself soon. Take care.

If I can I go to a quiet place, away from stimulus, sit down and concentrate on my breathing and slowly sip a glass of water. Often I either overheat or it's brought on by overheating (hot flashes),so I run my wrists under cold water and splash my face with cold water. You need to isolate your triggers and start from there.

One of the best way to deal with anxiety is write down what is cousing you anxiety then dedicate about 20 mins of your time in the evening. where you will just go throw your list. If you get any thoughts come during the day just write them down and just tell your self that you deal with it in the evening.do not spend more then 30mins of your time on your list hopefully this will help you.

progressive muscle relaxation is brilliant and you can find easy to follow guides on YouTube.

The other is paced Breathing so the outbreath should be longer than the in breath.

Generally there's some really good and helpful websites online that should help you but definitely speaking to your GP is the way forward.

Google grounding techniques.

And emotional coping strategies or livingskills its sometimes called.

These are fantastic and some health authorities run free courses. I actually believe everybody should do this and that it should be taught in schools they are so helpful.

I use to suffer but no more.

A few tips.

Look up EMDR - not cheap but really worked for me.

Kick boxing or normal boxing works as you get the angry out. You can always buy a bag and gloves and do it at home.

Another tip. Make a todo list can be little things like put petrol in the car. Tick them off at the end of the day. Be careful as your creating the list if you feel anxious stop adding to it that day.

Always happy to help anyone if they want to PM me.

I was so close to committing suicide at one point with anxiety and depression, life was going nowhere being unemployed for years, love life none existing I honestly thought ending it all would be the best idea.

Then the niece's came along into my world and I changed I wanted to get somewhere in life and give them the best. I got away from suicide ... I'm in and out of work and I've just said fuck love and relationships I don't need it. I just wait and see what happens, all that ever mattered to me was loyalty it's all I ever believed in. It just gets thrown back at me time and time again with women but I've rose above that now. I'm just here for fun not love.

If you have menopausal symptons then maybe it is linked but everyday stress can creep up on us and affect us in lots of ways too. I hope that you figure it out x
