Making sure that the reciept is correct. Once you leave the store it is difficult to prove that the 6 bottles of Champagne on your reciept were only 4 and that you didn't put 2 in the boot of your car before going back to query it. |

Because supermarkets habitually overcharge.
I've come to the conclusion it's done on purpose.
Overcharge 100 people, probably less than half even notice, particularly if they've done a big shop.
It all adds to their profits.Kerching!
If it was a genuine oversight then the undercharges would balance out with the overcharges, but it doesn't work that way.
As you'd know if you checked your receipts... |

Exactly this!!
It's not just women who do it OP - I do it for all the reasons Minnie states - the number of times I've had to head to customer services after leaving the till to get an error corrected is unreal, and with them offering double the difference on such errors, I'd be foolish not to. |

I do the scan and shop now. Have my bags open in the trolley and scan and pack everything as I’m going round. The price gun also totals everything up as you’re scanning! |

Asda, you pick a price gun up at the entrance and scan and pack everything as you’re going around. I’ll never shop any other way again. |

I think they do random checks.
Also similar to the self service tills, they will have calculated the possible amount of pilfering against the money saved on not using real live staff, and the saving has come out in their favour.

We’d just moved in together when Safeway started doing it, good times.

I've no problem with receipt checkers, it's the people who wait until the last item of shopping is back in the trolley before ever looking for their purse / wallet. They've put the stuff on the conveyer belt, waited to be served, put the items in the trolley and only then think to look for their money! Were they not expecting to be charged? I'm not saying have the money/ card in your hand necessarily but at least have a vague idea of where it is! |

I genuinely didn’t know I’d done this till I got home and unpacked but I picked up a garnier face mask like I always do, the charcoal one, scanned it put it in the bag. When I got home I’d put two in instead of one! |

"Why do so many women in the supermarket walk slowly away from the check out industriously checking the receipt? Ive never understood it and appreciate its not all. Just genuinely intrigued. "
The supermarkets make mistakes all the time. What price you see on the shelves is not always the price you end up paying. I guess the people who check are less gullible than you. |

Also those carrier bags that used to be "free"? They were never free, the supermarkets just factored the cost of them into the prices charged for everything else.
I can guarantee that won't have been factored back out now we have to pay for bags.
So we now effectively pay twice.
Every little helps, hey. |

You think thousands of checkout staff are in on this big conspiracy all accepting the risk of a jail term for fraud for minimum wage?
And none ever speak out |

Your not paying for the bags and the supermarket isnt keeping the money its all donated to charitable cuases.
So they still have to factor in the price of bags just like before youre jist paying a tax to a 3rd party now too |
