I am noticing a big increase in Big Issue sellers who are Romanian women.

Is it:

b. a pattern across the country

c. just my imagination

The land of grey peas and bacon

Because selling the big issue is classed as self employment. Person's from certain countries are limited to claiming benefits if they have not worked in the UK.

So for example a person from Romania has to of worked for a certain amount of time before being able to claim benefits. So they sell the Big Issue

A. To get work

B to obtain a reference

C. To intigrate with society

D. To claim benefits so that they can obtained housing benefit so they can obtain a decentl home...

There are two that sell on patches about five minutes away from me. They are the only BI sellers in the neighbourhood. Further afield I have definitely noticed more of them. They are Romanian, I have asked them, they are chatty enough despite very limited English.

N.B. I freely admit I cannot give hard numbers, hence option C.

Good question.

Mainly for two reasons:

Firstly, people from European Accession countries have limits on work permit status.

Secondly - and call me all the names you want here - I do believe the Big Issue should be to help people who have become homeless *whilst already living in the UK* and not for people to enter the country and declare themselves homeless.

Why would they do that.. they won't be entitled to benefits either

Do you buy the big issue?

If so buy it off someone who fits your required demographic. I'ts a buyers market

Does it matter? People that tend to sell the Big Issue are usually in, or trying to escape from a pretty desperate place. Surely their nationality is irrelevent.

I await the inevitable "not even proper homelss, living a big flash house etc etc" post with a sense of resigned inevitability...

don't buy it from them then, choose another vendor.

god forbid, I ever have to sell it.

mind ya, I feel similar about all the Brits in Rhodes, Canaries, Majorca, Benidorm etc etc.... giving out tickets for nightclubs to get drinks for the summer...

Has it not occured to you that they probably didnt "enter the country and declare themselves homeless"? Do you think possibly that they had some plan beyond that? Do you think that maybe their circumstances have changed since they arrived?

Incidentally, do you actually buy The Big Issue?

I think many people forget this. I was very, very close to being homeless 2 1/2 years ago. We are talking hours. A job offer fell through, on benefits and job hunting, benefits agency screwed up my application for Housing benefit, landlord served notice but agreed I could stay if I was upto date before end of the notice period. Housing benefit arrived on the final day. I was single and have no family, I'm not sure what would have happened as there is only so long you can sleep on friends sofas.

Mind you, ALL the benefits and magazine sales of ALL the Romanian and Bulgarian B.I. sellers in the UK combined won't match the bonus paid to Fred Goodwin at RBS or Adam Applegarth at Northern Rock as reward for screwing up.

But two wrongs don't make a right.

But today a court has ruled that by selling the BI they are classed as self-employed and are therefore entitled to apply for housing and income support benefits.

We don't buy the big issue because we can't afford to.

We are big believers in charity begins at home.

Recently, two of our children have made steps to fly the nest, one has got her own place, the other is moving into a new home in the next few weeks.

Both have been raised with good work ethics and attitudes and both work hard for a living.

Neither of them scrounged dole or claimed benefits after leaving school as they had jobs before they left the education system, not unlike most of their school who went straight to the DHSS to see what they could get on benefits.

We couldn't be prouder of them.

Maybe if the dolies got out of bed before 2.00pm and started selling the big issue to get a foot on the employment ladder, they wouldn't have to moan about Johnny Foriegner stealing work and wages and get Britain great again.

Because I found out about today's case as I googled the search that brought up the Telegraph article I quoted.

From everyone's favourite rag (today's).....

"As a Romanian immigrant living in the UK, Big Issue seller Firuta Vasile already qualified for more than £25,500 a year in benefits.

But one state handout she wasn’t entitled to was housing benefit. Until now.

Yesterday the 27-year-old mother of four was celebrating having won the extra payout – worth at least £2,600 a year – after her local council was over-ruled by a judge."

"Would prefer the Daily Mails version as I value there unbiassed reporting on our european friends"

I have the "Tea and Kittens" plugin on my browser so if I click a link that takes me to the Daily Fail it gets replaced with a lovely picture of a cup of tea and cute kitten.

I detest the Mail. The Telegraph has some bonkers right wing columnists but sometimes even a broken clock tells the correct time.

Like as I said earlier, the biggest leeches of public money generally live in Knightsbridge and are called Tarquin.
