FAB CRAP RUNNERS CLUB 2019 - WEEK FIVE

Jump to: Newest in thread

South Oxfordshire

Hello everyone and welcome to WEEK FIVE of the FAB Crap Runners Club (2019 edition).

.

.

.

MOTTO: We run #LikeAToddlerChasingAPug

.

.

.

EXPLANATION AND ETHOS:

EVERYONE is welcome in the Fab Crap Runners' Club (the crapper the better).

From 1st January 2018, a bunch of Fabbers began improving their fitness through running. None of them were natural athletes but they did it anyway.

.

.

.

FOR COMPLETE BEGINNERS:

"Couch to 5k" (C25K) is a nine-week running programme for absolute beginners, available on various free phone apps (Mrs T used Get Running). But you can join this thread to get fit by any means including walking and cycling - all are welcome. If you're expecting to be utterly crap at it (I mean reeeeeeeeeally bad), you're in the right place. Join the thread, tell us what your aim is and we'll cheer you on each week, just for trying.

.

.

.

FOR MORE EXPERIENCED RUNNERS:

Tell us what you’re up to with your running, your training and your races. Let’s us know your highs and lows. Please cheer on the newbies and give advice if they ask.

.

.

.

FCRC SOCIAL PARKRUN

I am doing a doodle poll to find out where everyone can get to with ease before organising the next social.

https://doodle.com/poll/77nghmke7uwunrwy

Again, it's completely anonymous and you can vote for as many options as you would like.

Hopefully the regions are self-explanatory (Sorry if you think your county should be in a different region!)

I'm in the process of organising locations for parkruns. I'm thinking one a month in the different regions.

.

.

.

AND FINALLY:

Who is working towards a specific goal? Tell us your progress.

Hello.

Sorry for the lack of support and thread contribution, life got a bit hectic there for a bit.

Anyone running this week, remember to wrap up warm and wear layers! Hopefully it won't snow too badly where you are (or, more importantly, get too icy).

Experienced runners, have you got any winter running tips?

I'm doing red January just over 100 miles completed and doing at least 5k a day

I can't run on the roads, it destroys my knees. Did 5k on the treadmill in the gym this morning though

My tips for running in the cold is to get decent windproof (and waterproof) clothing. Cold air can suck the life out of you, and make things really uncomfortable.

If you look after your fingers, toes and ears you can concentrate on your jogging/running, instead of feeling miserable.

Not experienced.....I found last year it was my toes that were always cold. But I run in leggings, wicking t-shirt and same type of top with a cagoule for drizzle, I don't see the point in going out if its p*ssing it down. I get warm very quickly and my age helps I prefer cooler runs than hot ones, I couldn't make it running through the summer last year

Sealskin socks are good for cold toes.

They are sold as waterproof, which I find they are pretty useless at, but they are really good for keeping your toes warm

They are quite expensive, but I find them great.

Just in reply to the last thread the c25k app I’m using doesn’t specify speeds to run at. I’ve self imposed 6mph or 10kmh as i want to complete the 5k in half an hour.

Typical though completed week 2 on Sunday and now have a cold and feel like crap so probably going to wait a few days as I currently can’t stop sneezing

I’ve got involved with a thing with a few mates called manvfat which is a 6 a side football competition but you can’t play if your bmi is under 27.5 and you can’t play if you don’t weigh. You get goals for your team if you lose weight which means it’s really good, I’ve lost 5kg in 2 weeks which is good for me

"Experienced runners, have you got any winter running tips?"

Appropriate kit is the obvious one, particularly for the extremities. I'm not a fan of the dark so do some treadmill sessions to make it less monotonous and also run commute so I don't need to drag myself back out doors once I get home on an evening

Done another 5k on the treadmill today, weirdly can run 5k on treadmill and could probably keep going, stick me outside to run and can’t complete a 5k without a cheeky wee walk in the middle.

I have challenged myself to complete one by the end of February though, I can do this

Any tips on avoiding the pins and needles in my foot which happens around the 25 min mark would be appreciate though.

Try googling Jack Daniels Vdot calculator. He's a famous running coach in the US. The calculator gives you the paces you should be doing for the various workouts.

Woohoo go me just ran the 20 mins straight......walked for a min stretching my legs then continued another 5 mins as it was my downhill stretch damn thing took me 3 or 4 attempts last year

Would like to say the hills are my killers, don't know if this means much but I start at 166m and run down to 101m, 1st steep incline is up to 120m then back down but a gradual up to 135m, steep down to 101 (my extra at the moment lol) then a walk home back up to 166m

I've not used strava for my pace, just happy that I'm doing it at the moment, my end goal would be 2 laps of my course.

No cold feet today but I used a pair of my walking sox

Yay *happy dances*

82km in total for RED January

And a very chilly, slightly snowy 5km this morning to start (Fab?) Feb.

Really impressed by the people who’ve not run before and are keeping going

I’ve always run but as the years progress done less, with poorer results and never far from injury.

Trying again to get motivated since early December and up to 3 runs per week now covering 20km. Not fast but trying to stay injury free, not really seen any weight loss benefits but it must be good for me. That’s what I’m telling myself anyway!

Yes will be at my normal one. It will be interesting as the landowner has done quite a bit of work on the surface and with so basic drainage in places sonce last winter so tomorrow wI'll be the first chance to see how effective it. And then it will be off with the trail shoes and on with the road ones for a 10+ mile run home afterwards so glad the forecast is good

I've been feeling the same, and have a marathon coming up at the end of April.

To be honest I wouldn't worry too much as for a half you don't need to be doing extra long distances. You have proven you can do 21k, so you have that in the bag.

Get out and put yourself down for a few shorter races over the next couple of months. Gives you a target to go for that is nearer.

Then you'll have some speed in your, rather delicious, legs and can spend the couple of warmer and sunnier months getting ready for your half.

"Morning FCRC, don't know what's wrong with me lately. Get mentally ready to run, go out, 'can't be arsed' kicks in and well, meh! I've been like this for over a week now

Managed 18.8km this morning in 1:49:49, could of, should of, gone further!

That's a super run so don't beat yourself up.

Do you have a race or challenge coming up? If not, that can make it hard to keep motivated esp if running alone

I've got my first half coming up in May, but recently am struggling to beat or get close to my 22km that I managed last month

Anyone got any big boots to give me a kick up the butt I need? "

I'll come over and chase you for 22k lol

"Thought I’d join this thread to keep me motivated.

Just back from a 11k run today, as I’m hoping to do a Marathon in the autumn. I used to run regularly but since my marriage break up I found it difficult to keep motivated. Anyhow hope everyone achieves something this week with your running

Welcome

Have you done a marathon before? "

Hi

Yes done two, Liverpool and London but both a few years ago (2011 and 2013) picked up a minor injury, ankle is painful so doesn’t look like I’ll be running this week

I've had a decent few days. Turned up late to ParkRun satrday, started after the tail walker and despite mud, wind and the congestion of starting last I still made it round in 26 minutes which I'd have been well chuffed with as a flat out effort. Sunday I was marshalling a t a local 10km (which I'd forgotten too enter - doh!) followed by a decent 8 miles that afternoon and just smashed a really tough hour long interval session on the treadmill. Fucked now though!

Decided to go indoors over the winter from November and run on the treatmill.. Bad move.. Ended up straining both my calfs.. So cut every thing out and stopped running.. About 3 weeks ago I did a 3 or so mile walk and they went again.. Felt like some one had given me a dead leg in both calfs.. So cut every thing out again hit both calfs with deep heat. Saturday just gone I decided to do some non impact on the cross trainer, no reaction.. So today I went out and did a slow 4k. Watched the distance and seeing if I had any reaction.. Got to just over 3.25 and sort of started to feel my left calf.. Finished and sort of feeling a slight twitch in my left calf.. Ovbvisoly stretched off.. And havent had any reaction since.. Going to take it up slightly on Thursday and see if I have a reaction. Hopefully not as I've got a 10 k in 6 weeks.. So fingers crossed...

On the up side I got a place on the Great North run

Well I have a night race today. 10k around a forest at night, what could possibly go wrong? Hopefully make it around injury free

I haven’t entered another half marathon yet but I’m keen on doing the Cardiff Bay 10k.

Crazy! I did a dirt run up the valley in Evesham a couple of years ago. Managed to slip down a slope and crash into a tree it was then I realised I hate running on mud and my dreams of a tough mudder were gone!

I can’t breathe and run! I’ve tried for years, had personal trainers, the lot!

So I concentrate on Zumba and gym work

26 minutes 50 seconds for just over 5k with a headwind during the uphill section. New top is great.

Injury just before Christmas took a loooong time to get to a stage where I could run again.

Building up slowly and steadily now to avoid any reoccurring issues.

Slow and steady wins the race

So yesterday I set off at park run aiming for faster than 24.30. And was on track for ithe for the first 3km or so but then the wheels fell off in spectacular style!! my god the last kilometer was tough!!

Today was 11 miles and my legs were as heavy as I expected after over 55 miles in the last 12 days. I am looking forward to a couple of hard earnt rest days now!
