"85% of the universe can’t be made up "
And yet we can’t detect it and no one knows what it is.
The main reason it has been postulated is because under general relativity galaxies would fly apart, so scientists made up dark matter to keep them together. But what if general relativity isn’t quite right? |

Now that’s where you start getting into the realms of quantum theory and string theory and all those weird and wonderful theories that no one can prove right or wrong |

Dark matter is one of those - "well, it can't be this, and it can't be that, so it must be something else - I know, let's call it dark matter".
It's a convenient explanation, but as yet, unproven. Personally, I think galaxies are encompassed by butterscotch flavour Angel Delight, and there's as much evidence for that theory as there is for dark matter. |

All space business is complicated. Easier to just look at the stars in awe and not try to figure it out.
But what an easy job, just making up whatever you like as there is no way to prove it anyway. |

If you look up at the sky there's great areas of darkness between the stars, filling the gaps,so there's your truth |

We know something unseen is out there in the universe because of an effect called gravitational lensing.Something is bending light .We just don't know what hence the term dark matter.
Although we can't see dark matter we can see it's influence . |

I'm guessing from your question that you are not an astro physicist.
Let the experts deal with it and let them devote their lives to its study.
Is this off the back of so many pseudo experts around now who are saying that the business owners and leaders of supply chains don't understand brexit |

We can detect its effects on light etc theres maps of it.
Its efectivly something the maths says should exist. But we havent yet thought of a test for.
Just like gravitational waves Einstein predicted them it was only last year we finaly managed to find them.
Higgs boson took nearly 50 years from being theorized to being able to test for it.
There can often be a huge gulf between knowing somwthing and proving it

Space expands from all points simultaneously if you sent anything "outside" the univwrse it would still be in the universe and the universe would continueue to expand from that object too
There is no "ourside" as anything and everything is made up of inside |

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe (1980, ISBN 0-345-39181-0) is the second book in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comedy science fiction "trilogy" by Douglas Adams, and is a sequel. It was originally published by Pan Books as a paperback. The book was inspired by the song "Grand Hotel" by British rock band Procol Harum. It takes its name from Milliways, the Restaurant at the End of the Universe, one of the settings of the book.

If dark is an absence of light it must be static.

No the atoms remain unaffected. But the space they are in is getting bigger so they have more room to move. But as were held together by all the forces (gravity, strong force, weakforce etc) its only really noticeable in terms of galaxies.
Kind of like say you blow a ballon half way up the gas fills the space each gas atom is say a galaxy
Now put the ballon in a box and suck the air out of the box, the ballon gets bigger but theres no more gas in it.
Now now individual "atom" or galaxy is affected but they have a lot more space to move around |

The thing is, it's all mostly just educated guesswork , just like the men who knew the earth was flat. From the information they had at the time that was the conclusion they came to, and on it goes.
It's beyond me why people care what's out there anyway, just seems like a waste of resources that could be used to improve the lives of the humans right here.

No its incresibly well research maths that has accurately predicted observations.
Humans calculated the circumference of the earth thousands of years ago with a stick and the sun.
No one really thought it was flat as its obviously not. If you walk long enough things disappear and appear so ita clearly curved |

Up until the 6th century BC it was widely believed the earth was flat , I googled
But a lot of the maths is based on theory, as we don't have the facts. |

No its incresibly well research maths that has accurately predicted observations.
Humans calculated the circumference of the earth thousands of years ago with a stick and the sun.
No one really thought it was flat as its obviously not. If you walk long enough things disappear and appear so ita clearly curved
Up until the 6th century BC it was widely believed the earth was flat , I googled
But a lot of the maths is based on theory, as we don't have the facts. "

This is true. However I suspect that it would soon become clear that I didn't have a clue |

Aye it was a random example of how ideas change over time using a well known disproved theory, the amount of time is kind of irrelevant to the point I was trying to make.

"
But it was never a theory. No one sat down and tried to calculate it there was no predictive model of flat earth comparable to modern mathmatics
Ancient mathmatics calculated the circumfrence with good accuracy milenia before it was possible to get the "facts" as you put it.
The predicted and untested mathematical theory of special relativity and the fact time passes at differnt rates for objects at differnt speeds enabled GPS to exist.
Its just not a relevant example as the theory already produces accurate predictions that match observations. |

"If we assume that nothing can go faster than the speed of light and we know the edge of the observable universe is moving away from us faster than the speed if light .We can say we will never be able to travel to the edge of the universe.
What is the speed of dark?
8x10^8 same as the speed of light."
I am not so sure about this, if dark had a speed, it would require either mass or a wave form, and that would make it much easier to study. But at the same time an absense of movement is quite hard to comprehend. |

"I'll ask my son. He's going to uni to study astrophysics and quantum physics. "
Hiya everyone, physicist here
Dark matter is called dark because it doesn't give off any light. But it doesn't absorb any light either. It does not interact with the electromagnetic force, the weak nuclear force or the strong nuclear force. This means that photons just go straight through it, they are not absorbed, emitted or reflected. There is no electrostatic or magnetic attraction or repulsion. Even the protons and neutrons in the atomic nucleus pass straight through it. It is invisible and intangible.
However it does have mass, and has gravitational attraction to ordinary matter. So what we see when we look at the universe is that the stars within galaxies are pulled towards the galactic centres much more strongly than could be explained by the amount of normal matter in those galaxies. It's just like there is an invisible intangible cloud of heavy "stuff" within every galaxy, the cloud is about eight times heavier than all the stars of galaxy put together. This cloud is the dark matter.
Dark energy is much less undestood. This appears to be some form of energy that doesn't cause light or heat or any of the normal forces. But does exert a "push", like a reverse gravitational force, that is larger when objects are further apart. At the size of small things like galaxies (!!) the push on individual stars is negligable, but on a scale billions of times larger it seems to push the galaxies, and groups of galaxies, away from each other.
Dark matter we understand fairly well, and experiments with the Large Hadron Collider (or maybe the Even Larger Hadron Collider when we bulid it) should be able to confirm the exact nature of it.
Dark energy - I stand ready to be corrected by any cutting edge theoretical physicist we have on site - I don't believe we even have any good guesses at what it really is |

Who knows what was calculated and sat down and discussed thousands of years ago the fact that it is documented that people believed it means the theory existed somewhere I suppose.
Like I said earlier it was just an example to show our ideas change over time.

They reckon that for every ten miles the curvature drops by thirty feet...so at what point does water bend? |

"They reckon that for every ten miles the curvature drops by thirty feet...so at what point does water bend?"
That depends on pressure, but from the end of an open hosepipe with a half open tap, it's about 5 feet. This can be increased by restricting the hose, but not by much, it always bends. |

"What is 85% of infinity?
The universe isn't thought to be infinite these days is it?
This makes my head hurt. I wonder what's after the edge of the universe. I can't comprehend "nothing".
Actually the observable universe is know to be a certain size but you are right nobody knows what is beyond it and maybe never will.
I wonder if its a completely different reality or nothing ie absence of anything at all. Its like people born without sight, I can't imagine that either. They simply have no sight so its not dark.
Space expands from all points simultaneously if you sent anything "outside" the univwrse it would still be in the universe and the universe would continueue to expand from that object too
There is no "ourside" as anything and everything is made up of inside" Ok , but what is it expanding into ?? |

"Doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist just because we don’t have the tech to do so once the earth was flat "
Yeah but the same people who say this rule out God out of hand even though we have no evidence of it. In fact in science they often get rid of God by saying it is not their job to prove he does not exist, but the job of religious people to prove it does exist.
They do not apply this ethos so adamantly to their own theories and often a "Best guess" is perfectly good enough for them. As long as they agree with the best guess. |

Surely god is disproved by the fact theres dozens of religions all claiming that all other gods are false.

Dark matter was made up by scientists who couldn't fathom what the universe is made up of.
As there can't be "nothing " there has to be something, so well call it dark matter, because we can't see it
I'm so clever |
