hi,

please take a minute to look at the story on the BBC or in the Essex county Standard..

a young girl was run down in broad daylight by an old guy who had failed a road side eyesight test 3 days previously..

her parents agreed to her life support being switched off 24 hrs later to enable her organs to be donated..

she was 16..

her mum is attempting to amend the current law to enable the Police to suspend on a temporary basis someones licence who fails such a test..

Tragic.

If the guy was over 65 wasn't he subject to regular eye checks to determine his suitability to drive? And, if so, why wasn't his licence removed permanently if his eyesight was deemed that bad?

I don't think handing the police draconian powers to strip motorists of their licences is the answer when clearly GPs need to have increased powers to mark someone's licence as unfit to drive.

Very sad

So why was he still allowed to drive after failing a road side eye test?

the current law allows the Police to ask or suggest to someone that they should for their own and other's safety, temporarily suspend driving pending the DVLA reviewing the individuals eye sight ..

he had failed the eye test after driving through a 'no entry' and colliding with a tree..

had they been able to remove his licence, yes he may have still gotten behind the wheel and killed the girl..

but then again he may have not...
