As a kid it was Moonraker but as an adult definitely Casino Royale with Daniel Craig, opening scene alone.

Although I’m gutted Danny Boyle won’t be directing the next one, as I’d be very interested in what he’d bring to the franchise.

It's a toss up between licence to kill and goldeneye. Big fan of Dalton as bond, but 006 best villain. If only Dalton had accepted the role one final time as you can tell it was written with him in mind

A Galaxy Far, Far Away & Spain

Each & every one of them is a favourite at some point & it’s a bit like trying to choose your fave niece or nephew.

For Connery it’s mostly Goldfinger for setting the gold standard.

For Lazenby it’s his only film, OHMSS for being close to the source novel.

For Moore it’s LALD with MR being a total guilty pleasure.

Dalton I’d go with either LTK for theme with TLD close second.

Brosnan I can flip from GE but music dates it, with TWINE equal 1st & DAD as a guilty pleasure (Halle Berry is gorgeous & it’s just fun for all the nods to previous films).

Craig has to be CR with the often ignored QOS & SP getting honourable mentions.

Sorry OP but AVTAK imho was Moore’s weakest as he was way too old. Enjoy it anyway. All Bond films have their positives for so many fans.

Can't wait for Daniel Craig to leave, he looked about 60 years old in the first one.

No fun at all in them, no excitment.

Casino Royale opening was one of the worst, and brought in a bunch of bad oppenings. It's just daniel craig over and over in them. Boring. Where is the sex? Where the naked women? Where the song screaming out the name of the film? Where is the hit of adrenaline that carries you through for the whole film. Boring.

Mission impossible is the new bond. Bond is just a poor mans jason bourne now.

I don't think View is the best bond film, but Walken is always a good watch!

Moore was a bit old for Bond by this point- his best was Live and Let Die for me.

My personal favourite varies dependant on mood- Daniel Craig's Casino Royale and Sean Connery's Diamonds are Forever are firm faves though.

There and to the left a bit

I'd separate the Craig Bond films from the others as they've taken a new direction - best of his probably Skyfall.

Of the others top 5 in no particular order:

You Only Live Twice - often overlooked but up there with the best of them

Goldfinger - set the standard for the franchise

Live & Let Die - adds a dash of humour but sticks to the Connery style mostly

The Spy Who Loved Me - the last decent Moore Bond

On Her Majestys Secret Service - Lazenby is much maligned for this but I actually think it's a decent film and he males a good Bond.

Best Bonds in order:

1 - Connery

2 - Craig

3 - Lazenby

4 - Dalton

5 - Moore (up to Spy Who Loved Me was excellent - were all hokum after that)

6 - Brosnan

The other half thinks I have a man crush on Daniel Craig. Think he is an absolutely superb Bond. Admittedly they have went a different direction with them now, far removed from the male chauvinist that moore/connery played and who wouldn't stand a chance to play todays character even in their prime. Injected much needed interest in the franchise with Craigs Bond. Would like to see big Idris play the next one or someone with the "happy to go for a pint but I will beat the shit out of you if you piss me off" look

"Dalton was used as a stop gap till brosnan could gain his release from remingtom steel. Dalton made a good fist of bond"

Sorry Stace but the story goes...

According to the documentary Inside The Living Daylights, the producers first approached Dalton in 1968 for On Her Majesty's Secret Service although Dalton himself in this same documentary claims the approach occurred when he was either 24 or 25 and had already done the film Mary, Queen of Scots (1971).

The extras on the Bond collection BluRays (& Wikipedia) are great for Bond Trivia.

Dalton turned them down as he thought he was too young for OHMSS. He was approached again for GE but wouldn’t commit to more than one film, so Brosnan got it. Both were good Bond’s for their time. Dalton for his edgier, almost Craig-esque Bond. Brosnan for being enough of the previous Bonds.

OK. Not entirely correct... This is going to be long winded and I do apologise for that. The facts as listed in Pierce Brosnans career history are as follows...

Pierce Brosnan first met bond producer Albert R Broccoli on the set of" For your eyes only"as his wife at that time (Cassandra Harris) had a small part in the film playing Columbos mistress. Broccoli said at the time this is my next bond when Roger decides to call it a day. Moore went on to play Bond a futher twice... Octopussy 1983 and A view to a kill 1985.The role to be next bond was then offered to Brosnan who accepted. In that period brosnan has been doing a show called Remington Steel for NBC. This show stopped in 1986.the worldwide publicity surrounding the news about Brosnan being the next bond brought great interest back in Remington Steel. Because of this NBC decided to do more remington steel episodes. Brosnan was still contractually obligated to that show and so had to give up the Bond role as NBC had him in a corner. This caused the Bond producers Eon productions to look elsewhere. They turned to Timothy Dalton. Dalton made two successful Bonds films.. The living daylights 1987 and Licence to kill 1989.

Brosnan would not discuss losing out on the bond role as Dalton was a close friend of his. After Licence to kill there were many legal disputes between the bond producers and the studio over distribution rights. This resulted in a 3rd bond film for Dalton in 1991 being shelved. The bond series was put on hold. By 1994 the issues had been resolved. Dalton said he was no longer interested in doing the role anymore. Brosnan in the meantime (now a free agent as Remington Steele has long since stopped production) was then approached again. He accepted the role a second time and signed up to do 3 bond films... Goldeneye 1995,Tomorrow never dies 1997 and The world is not enough 1999.

He came back in 2002 and did Die Another Day. This film received mixed reviews but was still a success at the box office. Brosnan also criticised aspects of the film. He went on record as saying "if connery can do six bonds then so can I" he asked Eon productions if he could other projects in between bond films. The agreed to this. The media began questioning whether he would actually do a 5th bond. He was receiving popular support from a number of quarters. The question of age the began to arise. Many had said Roger Moore had gone on too long playing Bond till he was 58. Despite the support Brosnan said in 2004 he considered himself dismissed from the role. Rumours still went on he would do another but in February 2005 he finally confirmed he was finished. In October 2005 made the announcement that Daniel Craig would in fact definately be the next bond. Brosnan approved of the choice and said Craig would make a great Bond. Sorry I had to go on for so long. This is all wrote down in black and white. As I see it these are correct facts. They are there for all the world to see. I'm not a smart arse but I'm definately a film buff. I do apologise for all this stuff going on and on. Happy fabbing all xx

Hi Stace,

Honestly I haven’t taken it as you being a “smart arse” or in any way taken it negatively. If anything I enjoyed reading your Bond info. Like yourself I’ve been a film fan & Bond fan for many years, especially with Bond’s first screen outing being released the year I was born. So please be assured I haven’t taken your great insights in any other way than two Bond fans revelling in trivia.

I certainly wouldn’t dispute the facts you’ve noted as, for the main, they are pretty spot on.

I would disagree in your assessment that Dalton was a stop gap though. I certainly wouldn’t consider his stint as Bond a mere “stop gap” for the following reasons:

Cubby Broccoli considered Dalton for OHMSS which he turned down believing Bond should be between 35-40 years old, not 25-26 as Dalton was around the time. (These quotes courtesy of both Dalton & Dana Broccoli “Inside The Living Daylights”). Broccoli himself thought Dalton would be an ideal Bond so the actor was always on Cubby’s shortlist, pursuing him “into the 1970’s & 80’s”.

With Moore’s retirement from the role the scriptwriters Wilson & Maibaum begin a script not knowing who would play Bond. This was where the “origin” story first gets a mention, but Cubby believed in “going forwards not backwards” with the films. It wouldn’t be until CR that Barbra would reboot the series with Bond’s origin story.

Sam Neill (Reilly Ace of Spies - 1983) is tested but Cubby vetoes this choice. Dalton is pursued again for TLD but with commitments to the film “Brenda Starr” he’s unavailable at the start of production & the producers look elsewhere for their lead. Production is delayed by 2 weeks as the search goes on.

Brosnan is also on the list riding high on tv’s “Remington Steele” but, as you noted, contracted to NBC who, at the 11th hour, decide on (5) more episodes. At this point Cubby states that Remington Steele will not be James Bond.

(Note: Both actors are contracted to other projects - one a film, the other a series).

Meanwhile Dalton finishes his film & is now available for TLD schedule & script/production begins to tailor towards Dalton’s preference for more of the Fleming type Bond. He’s contracted to 3 films, but as you noted MGM/EON find themselves in a legal dispute, resulting in the franchise forced into a hiatus after LTK.

It’s well documented that Brosnan certainly was on set with his then wife on FYEO, was offered Bond in ‘86 after Dalton couldn’t fit the schedule due to filming “Brenda Starr” (but he was jinxed by NBC at the last moment), & even that Cubby was certain of Brosnan being very high on the list of actors capable & destined to play Bond.

However, ultimately I can’t agree that Dalton was simply a “stop gap”. Certainly not in Brocolli’s eyes. Having worked in the industry I’m well aware of any film or tv production being a compromise in many ways, but ultimately everyone wants the best available for their productions. I know how often I personally had to compromise be it in script, shots, effects, final edits, & even crew. However everyone involved in any production tends to strive for bettering their last show. I’m sure the Bond producers would feel the same for their franchise.

If I can find the data on Dalton being offered GE (probably due to his contract) I’ll post it to you by PM as I don’t want to fill the thread with long “trivia posts” either.

Apologies to other Forumites if you find these posts dull. Just a couple of Bond fans enjoying everything Bond related.

Btw OP, did you enjoy AVTAK on another viewing?

Happy Fabbing everyone. Here’s to the next Bond continuing the franchise’s long standing successes.
