4am and I have been awake for 2 hours with every bad decision/memory running thru my head, along with a dollop of work stress and general grumpiness
Any tips from fellow insomniacs here? What do you do to turn your overactive brain off? Anyone else suffering too?

Well..I know this pain. Nothing worse than being middle aged and still stressing about that incident that happened 30, 20 or 10 years ago.
You cant change the past. You can only plan for a better future.
My wife...she could sleep at the drop of a pin but me. More often than not I'm awake at all hours and have been since I was young.
Anyway..results from the following are variable. I'm a chronic insomniac but sometimes (for weeks or months on end) the following 3 things help me.
1) Pondering something interesting, pleasant or completely fantastical before going to sleep. Think about a positive such as something you really want to do, somewhere you really want to go or make yourself the hero/heroine of your own story when trying to sleep. Doesn't matter where, when or how. Just focus on it and block out other thoughts. Even a completely fantasy situation can help...just avoid sexual ones. That often works for me.
2) Try to sleep in a cold room. Have your blankets and wrap up warm but make sure the rest of the room is on the cool side.
3) White noise like a fan, hum of an engine or whatever might help. There's plenty of recordings on youtube. Some might help.
The last is sleeping tablets (obviously) but they make me feel like shit so I avoid them.
I don't think there is a "one answer suits all" and I don't, after all these years, think there is a current solution for insomnia. Some people just have over active imaginations. All you can do is find ways to manage it occasionally. |

I was actually about to offer you a suggestion but then I thought....I am an occasional insomniac and I go downstairs to watch murder documentaries at 4am.....hardly helpful..... |

Second the white noise . There’s apps that will play white noise or waves crashing...search for “white noise generator” in what ever App Store you use ... |
