I am sat here at work another night of reading through here and I had a thought. Why have we become so afraid to be offended? I often find myself in a situation where I have said something only tangentially connected to a person and they will act like I just fucked their mum infront of them. So I have to think, is it me? I am only saying things we can all observe. Then comedy gets infected with the need the comic now has to state that a joke is a joke and not actually what they believe. So they won't be hung by the free speech killers.
And this is not just a generational thing either, everyone from teenagers to middle aged people with nothing better to do, jump on the offence train as soon as they hear it pull in.
So what is offence? Not what is offensive, what is offence.
I think offence is the fear of having your views and ideas challenged. I may not wrong but it would make some sense.
You see, in the household I grew up in if I wasn't dodging a boot from a d*unk old man, I was being debated by the soulless demon responsible for subjecting me to this life and you know those conversations you shouldn't have, politics, religion and death. We talked about all of it. Ideas constantly challenged and opinions modified taught me not to take what I think I know too seriously. So how do we cure this recreational outrage?
Is it possible to create a space where offence can be exercises so you can all be less afraid of being offended. A place where offence is welcome to challenge us and make us laugh. Any ideas? Could we not just throw offence at each other until it doesn't stick anymore.
Tips and tricks to manage offence.
1. It is your right to be offended.
2. If you are offended notice that you are still alive, be grateful and move on.
3. Men; stop #notallmening, if you are offended because a woman shouts off about men being scumbags, chances are that you are a scumbags. If you were not, you would not feel the need to tell everyone that you are not.
4. Lefties; stop trying to police language. Freedom of speech is important for many reasons and the most important of which being that evil people can just outright tell you how evil they are. Stop them from being free to say what they think will just make it harder to identify.
5. Righties; stop complaining about the left calling you nazis. Obviously you are not going around killing the Jewish people but you have to admit that some of your superior views are the same and hey, if the uniform fits?
6. Representative outrage is cultural appropriation.
7. Not all brexit voters are racist but all racists are brexit voters.
8. If you are fat and are offended by someone pointing this out. Put down the fork.
My God sleep deprivation is setting in and I think this has just turned into insults.
Which gives me an idea. Please comment below with a general insult. No direct hits just not true kinda true statements.
E.g. Not all priests are Boy fuckers but if you are one what better place than a over 1000 year old organisation that specialises in lies and cover-ups.
I assume you have stopped reading by now but if not you win a prize.
The knowledge that you had nothing better to do than read this.
Also full disclosure, I am a white ciss male in the UK. I am the descendent of monsters that murdered their way around the world and if you are here then you probably are too. Remember that next time you wanna moan because a minority needs a job. |

Wow. Brilliant post. According to the dictionary..
offended
adjective
adjective: offended
resentful or annoyed, typically as a result of a perceived insult.
What gets me is people who are 'offended' on other peoples behalf on which it has no aspect or relevance to themselves. I'm bi and If someone straight finds it offensive of a derogatory comment towards my sexuality I'd be like
'Why?'
For what reason do feel the need to be offended on someone elses behalf. It's kinda like saying You're stupid and can't think for yourself so I'm gonna stick up for you and be offended on ur behalf. Hypocrites. I suppose the world in general is opening up to diversity and trying to accpet it all so maybe that's why the 'offended card' gets played too often.
Jeez there's millions of humans being slaughtered for illegal war of control of the country etc yet all we hear about on the news is some woman called karen who wants the man in Manchester removed because the name offends her as a woman! The media doesn't help out either tbf. |

You could easily say some in here are very easily offended, even if the post isn’t directed at them, they get very defensive about it and go out of their way to tell someone they’ve been offended, and so starts the barrage of defence remarks about it, commonly known as lamp post pissing i believe? |

I think people have always been offended. The difference these days is that offended people seem to believe that those giving offence should be silenced, and only people that agree with their particular viewpoint should be allowed to be heard.
And more and more the rest of society seems to concur with this which is slightly terrifying when you think about it : the thought police are out there and you’re demonised unless you agree with a sanitised homogeneous view of the world! |

I do wonder how people get by in life from the reactions on here as proved by yesterday’s shenanigans.People use being offended to shut down debate on here.
Being offended does not mean you are right.

Love it....
Maybe I am or maybe I am just offended by the possibility of being offended by people that get offended. No offence. |

Fab is a place where there is a section who seem who just love to be offended .
Whether it be political , sexuality , or simply what newspaper you read , there will be the same faces jumping onto anything you say .
I have to agree with the poster who says that in order to be offended , one has to give a shit about who’s saying it . But more so , I have to say that I’m certainly not mature enough to care either |

So what you're saying is that we all need to get over ourselves and start saying stuff that you want us to say in a way you want us to say it because we've become too politically correct. We all need to be offended more.
I agree in part, we do need to stop being afraid to say certain things and encourage open and honest discussion without fear of being shut down. The unfortunate side effect of that is that some people enjoy being offensive and claim it's because they are only "saying it like it is".
I don't think its a bad thing for anyone to have their views questioned or to be obliged to moderate their way of expressing those views.
In other words I agree in part but there's more than one way of skinning a rabbit |

No I don't believe I was saying that at all. I don't give a fuck what you say or how you choose to say it. Your offence is a source of great entertainment to me because I boil everything down to this.
We die and for some that is sooner than later if you wanna take life so seriously, fine. But remember you and your opinions are as pointless as mine.
I recognise the futility of our energy and the finality of oblivion and I choose to laugh at it as much as it laughs at us. |

In this day and age it would appear that being offended is a fashion trend. There are people who actively look for something that offends them, and when they find it they shout from the rooftops about how offended they are.
We're "old school" and say it as it is. Some people, known as snowflakes, really can't handle that. Post a comment on the forum disagreeing with someone, someone gets offended, reports you and you get a forum timeout.
It's not just "political correctness", it's the namby pamby millenials and hipsters who've made being offended a way of life. |

“Nobody has the right to not be offended. That right doesn't exist in any declaration I have ever read.
If you are offended it is your problem, and frankly lots of things offend lots of people.
I can walk into a bookshop and point out a number of books that I find very unattractive in what they say. But it doesn't occur to me to burn the bookshop down. If you don't like a book, read another book. If you start reading a book and you decide you don't like it, nobody is telling you to finish it.
To read a 600-page novel and then say that it has deeply offended you: well, you have done a lot of work to be offended.”

I don't think people have a problem if they are offended by something.
People deliberately offending people have the problem, in my opinion.
Or they want to make money out of it by trying to make people laugh. |

Stones in glass houses kids. As I said in the OP it is not a generational thing. Millennials, baby boomers and gen X. I have spent more time reading those over 50 white boys piss and moan about the injustice of it all much more than the younger ones.
To blame millennials for our culture is akin to blaming the waiter for your food not cooked.
In fact I would think the most sensitive group here are the middle aged white man who hasn't realised that his opinions are outdated. |

I am extremely ranty but an aspiring writer should be able to spin a yarn or two in the middle of the night. But if you think that tiny thought was a rant, well I hate to tell you about the Bible. I do appreciate the critic though. If I am ever going to be a published writer I need to be able to sell to the masses and clearly I have to make my thoughts small and slower so some of you can understand me. Also as I said, 3 in the morning bored at work. If I had anything better to do at that point I would have. Now I ramble on because I like writing thoughts into words. It is a wonderful form of magic and the power it has is fascinating.
For some of you I may have changed your mood. I, an insignificant mistake caused by a sexual mishap now here. Standing before you and feeding from your reactions.
Never have I felt so influencal. A nihilistic loser with no voice and no power is now reading your responses with a smile on my face.
Does the Devil get offended by evil?
Also if you wish to share your opinions then please do rather than just requoting someone else. |

Pretty much this but I got most of it.
I think there's a grouo of people also jumping on the #snowflake bandwagon to every one who challenges things?
Why are so many people worries about someone telling them they're offended, if the know their dialect wasn't offensive?
We're very socially selective in relation to diversity these days? Some topics no-one would dare express an honest constructive opinion on, whereas we're quite comfortable slagging off men on their appearance or unemployed people etc etc
All you can do is be the best person you can be and the rest will do whatever they will! |

Oh no actual offence. I believe that is one of the signs of the apocalypse.
I could very well be offended by the fact that you presume that I have any presumptuous opinions as to what anyone else presumes. Turns out though. I had so much fun writing that sentence I forgot what I was supposed to be offended by.
