With the economy in severe risk of further recession and with ordinary working folk facing huge increases in the cost of living, it's heartening to know that Michael Gove thinks the taxpayers should cheer up Lizzie with the gift of a £60m yacht for her jubilee.
Yes I know people will say it will be used to generate trade but funny how the USA, China, Germany et al manage to drum up business without one. |

If Queenie needs a new boat then Queenie shall have one. No self righteous monarch should be without one, and as for US, Germany, China... they don't have a Queenie, do they. |

"Not a Royalist then I assume. "
No I am not, I am a republican but not a rabid one. I think the monarchy should exist as long as the majority of the UK population support it and I would definitely save Lizzie, Charlie or even Philip from a burning building before Tony Blair.
However I think this is taking circuses and bread too far. To be fair, it's not the royals suggesting we spunk this money on a boat. |

"This boat and the railway line between Londonand Brum are just Hoover Damm's projects to generate work in an econnomy that needs it. "
We live in more mechanised times than the 1930's of course but Roosevelt's New Deal work schemes were generally very labour-intensive so as to get as many unemployed involved as possible. This might possibly be said of the HS2 but even though it would be welcomed by one of our luxury yacht manufacturers on the South Coast, I don't think this is in that category. |

And of course the tender would have to be open to all the EU manufacturers so it is possible it could end up being a boost to Italian, French or German employment. |

A project with long lead times like the completely useless HS2 is an odd way of creating employment now. |

Away from my personal feelings(republican) isnt it a bit daft to give an 84 yrar old woman something she will rarely use.
How many pro people would agree with "Shall we build a yacht for Charles and Camilla"? Because that is what it will be |

"the royal have not asked for a new boat its just a news papers "
I made the point the royals did not ask for one, but it is not just a newspaper, it was a Minister of State. |

You know what?
I hope she gets one because unlike the Labour government and idotic republicans, they are actually a useful part of the UK.
Tony Blair got rid of the last one because he didn't like someone having a yacht. I hope he sinks on his. |

At a time when the government launches attack after attack on the poor, sick and disabled, or what we like to call scroungers, I think it would be a gesture of goodwill to give one of our biggest scroungers a nice big boat

Turn left at the Singing Ringing Tree |
Well if the people of the UK bought the Queen a nice big shiny boat, does that mean that we all get a choice of which timeshare week we get - or just when any hurricane is forecast and the big boat won't be in use by the royals? |

Stop mistaking the welfare underclass as 'poor'. They're shirkers, benfits cheats and deserving of every cut in benefits the government can throw at them.
As usual though they cannot hit the right people because there are genuine people on welfare and to solve each individual case you will need 20+ years.
Labour created these work-shy people to get votes. |

Yes indeed I would agree we have a Labour-created client state as every government around the world tries top do through patronage etc, but the ones we could all agree are scroungers are not the ones who would have footed the bill for a yacht. |

Actually.....The Conservatives created Incapacity Benefit back in 1995 in order to fiddle the unemployment figures when the numbers out of work were spiralling.....but lets not let facts get in the way of a bit of forum waffle eh? |

Yachts and railways, the boat builders will be in work, the manual labourers will be in work.
Where will the money come from to fund them?
If this country is already on its arse, how can the money be generated?
Will it come from foriegn sources?
Will it be British workers and companies supplying materials and labour?
If its for OUR Queen then are we obliged to create the cash and workforce? |

Very well said Jane. It's amazing how some people think history began in 1997.
Back on topic though knowing the way the ConDems work they'd probably farm the job out to a German company and lay off the Brits.
Sound familiar? |

£1 per person, fantastic. I'm happy to pay for a few misguided people who don't understand and think it's cool to be refusenicks.
Best start saving for the State funeral that will happen (When, who knows) and then the Coronation a few months after the state funeral...

And it will be used by the heirs and successors, as is. Plus the UK get a nice bit of bling, for some pomp and circumstance |

I have been a republican, then I saw George Bush.
God bless our Queen
IF the Tories want to build a boat, (remember it isn't the Queens idea) then the only condition I would like to put on it is, The boat and everything on it should be built in the UK, by UK passport holders |
