"I haven't washed my hair in a week. I spend all day in bed. I'm in a real rut. "
Been there myself. Bit easy pick yourself up. Just take it one day at a time and are little goals for yourself. Even something as simple as just washing your hair. Then slowly hopefully you'll feel better x |

This, it is surprising at how big a difference something so small as washing your hair or a shower can make you feel. It won't get you out of the rut but it helps get things rolling.
Even just talking about it may help. |

I've been where you are. I had a pretty tough year last year. Talking helps and so does asking for help too. Take each day as it comes, set yourself a goal each day. PM me if you ever want to talk about it x |

Agree with this. It’s all about tiny steps in the right direction. Even they can be hard when depressed, but it’s the best way.
Good luck |

Yeah, it’s summoning the power to overcome your body telling you not to move when it’s capable of doing it.
Much harder than it sounds, but one step turns to two, and so on..... |

I'm surprised at the support.
Thanks guys.
I'm on the highest dose of fluoxetine already and not working so I've no reason to leave the house
I'll work myself up to having a shower and see if it helps |

Sometimes it takes the medication a while to help. For me personally I had to come off it all. I found it was help what so ever. I tried it for 2 yrs. I slowly stared back doing small things. A shower, hovering the floor, washing dishes. They were all small things but with each little thing I did j was feeling a tiny bit better. |

I’ve seen great support for mental health matters here over the years. Honestly. You’d be surprised at how much experience and support there is out there.
By all means send a message if you prefer. I’ve had great help, so just passing it on, really.
Brilliant if you can get out of bed - a big, small step .

I have been suffering for the past year and still have really bad days, the past couple of days i have done nothing but keep bursting into tears, I have a very supportive doctor for which i am thankful and have just had my medication changed as i felt i was getting no help from it , but what i miss most is having that someone to just put their arms around you not to tell you everything is okay but just that personal touch. |

How long have you been on them? You might need a change of meds ? Make sure you keep talking , don’t ever be frightened to ask for help even if it’s just for someone to listen xxx |

I used to make a list.
Put getting out of bed and bathing on it.
Don't make the list too long.
You can do it. You will get through it.
You may feel like a different person afterwards, but I don't see that as a bad thing. |

Been there for many many years. All I can say is, it can and does get better. Won’t pretend it’s easy either...and had nothing to do with money, or family, or anything in my life as I had a good life that people would envy. Still depressed.
I have come through it, and know you can too. Easy to say though....
Good luck. |

You may want to go see your doctor. Fluoxetine is one of the older SSRIs and is not as effective as the newer ones such as sertraline or mirtazapine.
If you need to chat our inbox is always open

Do you have plenty of support? A friend that might come round for coffee and a chat. I know it can feel like too much effort washing your hair, but having a shower and washing your hair would make you feel better. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t get to wash your hair though.
Is there someone you could go for a little walk with? Just to get out for a while. xx |

Another good way of getting rid of bad thoughts when they get you in a rut is
Imadgen you are somewhere nice say the seaside in your build a sand castle village when you are putting your sand into the bucket also put in there all the unwanted thoughts that sometimes rule us for no fault of our own.. Stand back and admire your castle you have built and knowing all your unwanted and unneeded worries are built into that castle..
As the sea comes in and washes away your sandcastle it also takes away your worries with it and your now free of them
Every time you feel something coming on in your mind take yourself to the bucket and watch them wash away... Helps release aniexty also |

"I haven't washed my hair in a week. I spend all day in bed. I'm in a real rut. "
Hi hope your ok.
My name is Liam and what I'm about to say will probably kill any chance of me meeting anyone on here again. To help someone who is going thru a rough time it will be worth it.
Let me tell you a little about myself
I was diagnosed with bipolar about eight & half years ago after suffering with depression since my childhood. It's been difficult over the years to maintain a normal life at times struggling with various life situations from family, relationship & work I lost all of them. Some many times and it almost killed me. Because of the illness, when it happens you only feel worse and the rut only gets deeper and wider and more difficult to get out.Its not the end of the world though there are many paths you can take. Some people say take one day at a time, which is true. But if there is a problem that you can not seem to to get over regardless how small or big. Get some professional help! I know that might sound to much and maybe a little scary. It did me the world of good and yes I still have some bad days, but they are far a few between.
The reason I give a little of my back story is that there maybe something you can relate too and give you some food for thought or I've just the wrong thing and I deeply apologise.
Also if you feel like a chat feel free to contact I will do my up most best to get back you as soon as I can.
Liam

I have bipolar and get severe bouts of depression. My little girl is a delight and makes sure I go out at least once a day even if it is to just pop to the shop or go round the block. If she is at her dad's then she calls to check I have been out.
It does help to have someone in your life that can push you |

I don’t think it will kill your chances. It will resonate strongly with many and I suspect most women will respect a guy who is able to express his inner thoughts and offer help to others.

Getting stuck in a rut is easy getting out of it is not so.
As others have mentioned small things do you make a difference. Sometimes just getting out of bed is an achievement and you should recognise that and be proud of yourself.
I think it's always important to remember that sometimes it's ok, not to be ok. Don't put too much pressure on yourself and be kind to yourself and remember there will always be someone prepared to listen. I am always happy for you to send me a private message but just make sure you reach out to someone and you don't isolate yourself. Wishing you well. |

OP. Please don’t suffer in silence. Too often we are too ashamed or feel foolish for speaking up. Don’t. As someone who has suffered depression without actually knowing it, it’s too easy to miss. And the consequences can escalate faster than you know. Talking to someone-frankly and openly will help. But please don’t think you are unable to reach out.

I do not have depression but do have anxiety. Im on Sertraline 150mg daily. It started after leaving the army. My ex wife left me and the kids soon after i became a civilian. I had trouble coping. my gp was great. Still is.
If you think you need help go and see your gp.
You live in a lovely part of the world OP. I spent 2 years in your city. Those big white buildings overlooking the Foyle. 5 star accommodation !
Try to focus on what makes you happy but go and get some help if you need it. |
