"He didn't kill the occupants of the other car so we don't need to worry about that. There's loads of people who shouldn't be driving, most of them much younger than 97. After watching 100 year old drivers a while back I did change my opinion slightly about older people behind the wheel. I do think though that it should be compulsory to resit your test at regular intervals. So many people get in to bad habits or misunderstand road signs, roundabouts etc." I agree. Especially about resiting a test.

"All drivers at 70 have to resit there test it's. The law, however the statistics show more younger new driver ers under 30 cause more accidents than those over 70, accidents do happen wether your careful or not. " You have to renew your driving licence before your 70th birthday but you don't have to resit your test

" They don’t have to take a retest at 70, drivers that age effectively self-certify to confirm their fitness to drive and then re-certify themselves every three years.

"The full circumstances that led to the accident haven’t been released so we don’t know what actually happened. We can speculate but we don’t know. Yes he was pulling on to the main road but what happened next is unknown to everyone except those with inside info. The other car may have been speeding, overtaking a slower car on the wrong side of the road etc, we do not know. Whether he should be driving at 97 is another argument though." I read somewhere he said the sun got in his eyes. As it appears he was entering a main road the other driver had right of way. He pulled out not seeing the other car.

The next time it happens could be catastrophic !

"FFS there are licenced racing drivers in their 90s. Age is not necessarily relevant to driving safety. I would assume Philip has the best advice available regarding his driving " As the police have not revealed any in depth detail i fully agree with the above quote. As the Duke was a very good pilot and helicopter pilot up until 1997, i would hazard a guess that his cognitive skills are more than likely better than most drivers on this forum. "The Duke learned to fly all types of aircraft. He gained his RAF wings in 1953, his helicopter wings in 1956 and his private pilot's licence in 1959. Prince Philip achieved 5,986 hours in 59 types of aircraft. The Duke's final flight was on 11th August 1997 from Carlisle to Islay, following which he has stopped flying."

"In wintertime the sun sits low in the sky and on a clear day can momentarily blind any driver no matter what age or ability. Take the case of my mate Tom who was a taxi driver ferrying a disabled child to school. Approaching the crest of a hill he was suddenly blinded by the low winter sun and ran into the back of a lady driver who had stopped. As he was carrying a disabled child Tom was required by law to call the police even though the damage was slight and there were no injuries. Tom was between the two cars inspecting the damage when the police car attending ran into the back of his taxi breaking both his legs. None of those involved were over forty and two were professional drivers!" Ouch! We were only saying yesterday, with the bright, low sunshine how difficult it is to see, so you can see how these accidents happen.

"Driver error can still be an accident. It's not like drivers often deliberately crash. If I make an error and spill my tea on the kitchen floor, it's still an accident. " You don't behind the wheel accidentally drive too fast, drive under the influence of drink or drugs, jump red lights etc.. They are all actions that the driver does.. Same as not taking medication, losing consciousness etc.. Factors like mechanical defects and having a semi flat tyre which contribute are not accidents. Even such as a deer running out is just that a factor, it didn't accidentally cross the road..

"By the sounds of it he stopped flying when he felt it was too much for him, this will possibly be the case here. He didn't stop flying because it was too much for him, he stopped flying because he would not pass his next medical in able to retain his pilot's license." Nope. Royal biographer Hugo Vickers told BBC News: "Any kind of car accident at the age of 97 is likely to produce shock. "Some years ago he gave up flying planes long before he needed to because he was scared that if something happened there would be a lot of criticism. "You know, why was he, at the age of 55, still flying a plane when he should have retired at 48 or something like that. "So he does listen to these things - he's very, very sensible. "If anyone's involved in a car accident, it's quite a frightening thing. If he thought that he'd lost concentration or something or he hadn't seen somebody he would realise he's not up to it anymore."

"I just think the reason given of being dazzled by the sun is ridiculous, if you stop at a junction on a busy road and can't see then you shouldn't pull out! He should have sat there till the sun moved round It could have been a flash of the sun catching on a cars rear window the other way. Distractions happen. Someone crashed into me because a bird flew up from the road. " You don't just take a chance pulling out onto a busy road if you're blinded and cannot see if there is oncoming traffic, you're putting yours and other people's lives at risk. If he's suggesting he could see the road was clear when he pulled out but suffered a moment of being blinded mid manoeuvre that's rubbish as he wouldn't have been hit if that was the case. By saying he was blinded by the sun he's basically admitted to pulling out of the junction blind.

"By the sounds of it he stopped flying when he felt it was too much for him, this will possibly be the case here. He didn't stop flying because it was too much for him, he stopped flying because he would not pass his next medical in able to retain his pilot's license. Nope. Royal biographer Hugo Vickers told BBC News: "Any kind of car accident at the age of 97 is likely to produce shock. "Some years ago he gave up flying planes long before he needed to because he was scared that if something happened there would be a lot of criticism. "You know, why was he, at the age of 55, still flying a plane when he should have retired at 48 or something like that." So much for the accuracy of royal biographers then. The duke stopped flying on 11th August 1997 at the age of 75. He did that because the CAA and his doctors told him he would not pass another medical. With no medical pass his pilot's license would not be renewed. Not only is the Hugo Vickers factually wrong, he can't even do simple maths to work out the duke was 75 at the time, not 55. Sloppy reporting by the BBC as well, because they should have checked the facts before broadcast.

"I used to think you did need to resist your test at 70, but maybe you just have to reapply for your licence. Think you probably should have to resit though. I don’t know if there are any stats backing up the idea that accidents correlate to the age of drivers, but it seems likely that awareness and reaction times are bound to diminish as people get older." A bizarre but true amazing thing has happened ! I 100% agree with you

The Duke learned to fly all types of aircraft. He gained his RAF wings in 1953, his helicopter wings in 1956 and his private pilot's licence in 1959. Prince Philip achieved 5,986 hours in 59 types of aircraft. The Duke's final flight was on 11th August 1997 from Carlisle to Islay, following which he has stopped flying. That's the only thing it says about his flying on that link. Nothing about stopping due to failing or potentially failing a medical

"For everyone saying it’s fine for a 97 year old to be driving , here’s a question for you . You have a grandmother or grandfather who are well into their 90s , and they offer to take your child out for the day . They will be driving themselves and the child , while you are at work . Still happy with those in their 90s to drive ? " Providing they are OK drivers, yes. I would trust a child with some people my own age.

"He was entering a main road with a 60mph speed limit, he's 96,a dangerous idiot. " The road in question was a know accident hot-spot. I understand that the speed limit has been reduced. Additionally, young men are statisticaly more often involved in accidents.

So many people get in to bad habits or misunderstand road signs, roundabouts etc." I agree on that; I’m 34 and I cannot drive our new car for toffee....plus I still have a fear of getting used to the left side of the road. It doesn’t have to do exclusively with how old somebody is.

The reflexes and abilities of someone in their late 90s aren’t up to the conditions and situations that the roads of today demand . And I guess you meant you ‘wouldn’t ‘ trust a child with some people your age .

"I'd of thought he would have had his own personal driver. Everyone should get a bus pass at age 60 and your licence take away, some people are just too old and decrepit to be driving and it would clear up some space on the roads." That give you another 29 years then. Excellent.

"I wouldn’t want to be driving a powerful range rover at 70 yet alone 97 I have similar Mercedes it has acceleration of a sports car yet its. 2 1/2 tonne No he’s far too old and fragile to be driving at his age" In his younger days, he has quite possibly driven boats and / or aeroplanes with multiple times more power than any German car you might drive today.

"I know the junction on that road very well... It's a well known accident black spot. All this age and driving a big range rover talk etc is Bollocks.... All these statistics.... I bet people measure a Willy in MM to make sure every measurement counted. Or you're not convinced you've douched unless you've weighed yourselves. Get a grip " Micheal has a good point.

"All drivers at 70 have to resit there test it's. The law, however the statistics show more younger new driver ers under 30 cause more accidents than those over 70, accidents do happen wether your careful or not. " Now remind me why I find that a social meet with you might not lead to the bedroom.

This is getting silly now. If you walk in front of a Range Rover at 40mph or 70, you're road kill.
