He didn't kill the occupants of the other car so we don't need to worry about that. There's loads of people who shouldn't be driving, most of them much younger than 97.

After watching 100 year old drivers a while back I did change my opinion slightly about older people behind the wheel. I do think though that it should be compulsory to resit your test at regular intervals. So many people get in to bad habits or misunderstand road signs, roundabouts etc.

All drivers at 70 have to resit there test it's. The law, however the statistics show more younger new driver ers under 30 cause more accidents than those over 70, accidents do happen wether your careful or not.

We can speculate but we don’t know. Yes he was pulling on to the main road but what happened next is unknown to everyone except those with inside info.

The other car may have been speeding, overtaking a slower car on the wrong side of the road etc, we do not know.

Whether he should be driving at 97 is another argument though.

They don’t have to take a retest at 70, drivers that age effectively self-certify to confirm their fitness to drive and then re-certify themselves every three years.

Yep , this seems to be the most likely cause .

So his eyesight , his reasoning , his driving skills are all not up to it . Of course he shouldn’t be driving . The next time it happens could be catastrophic !

FFS there are licenced racing drivers in their 90s. Age is not necessarily relevant to driving safety.

My mother has been a danger to other drivers since 1964 when she was 20. She's even managed to write off a, stationery car just backing out of the drive and another in a 5mph crash (both in the 80s when she was in her 40s)

I would assume Philip has the best advice available regarding his driving

Jesus if we're banning people for pulling out on traffic half the car drivers in the uk would have thier license revoked if we gave all bikers helmet cams.

I'd estimate its at least a once a week occurrence for me. And at least 2 lane changes into my right if way forcing me to take evasive action if i take a motorway journey

This was a well known accident Black spot and it is under review. Rather than have a go at philip and his age. Get the speed limit down (it's currently 60). There's far too many drive far too fast. Age should not come into it. However the ability to drive should. And that goes for all ages. There are people out there who should not be sitting behind the wheel of a car.

As the police have not revealed any in depth detail i fully agree with the above quote. As the Duke was a very good pilot and helicopter pilot up until 1997, i would hazard a guess that his cognitive skills are more than likely better than most drivers on this forum.

Ive noticed as my dad has got older he drives slower now guessing as slowed reaction times.

Sane with my mum, but she was involved in an accident recently guy hit her then drove off. No insurance, no mot etc police have been really good and caught the little shit after finding the car abandoned.

He was middleaged

In wintertime the sun sits low in the sky and on a clear day can momentarily blind any driver no matter what age or ability.

Take the case of my mate Tom who was a taxi driver ferrying a disabled child to school. Approaching the crest of a hill he was suddenly blinded by the low winter sun and ran into the back of a lady driver who had stopped. As he was carrying a disabled child Tom was required by law to call the police even though the damage was slight and there were no injuries.

Tom was between the two cars inspecting the damage when the police car attending ran into the back of his taxi breaking both his legs.

None of those involved were over forty and two were professional drivers!

That will not stop silly old blind Germans pulling out in front off cars.

I'd of thought he would have had his own personal driver. Everyone should get a bus pass at age 60 and your licence take away, some people are just too old and decrepit to be driving and it would clear up some space on the roads.

I used to think you did need to resist your test at 70, but maybe you just have to reapply for your licence.

Think you probably should have to resit though. I don’t know if there are any stats backing up the idea that accidents correlate to the age of drivers, but it seems likely that awareness and reaction times are bound to diminish as people get older.

You don't just take a chance pulling out onto a busy road if you're blinded and cannot see if there is oncoming traffic, you're putting yours and other people's lives at risk.

If he's suggesting he could see the road was clear when he pulled out but suffered a moment of being blinded mid manoeuvre that's rubbish as he wouldn't have been hit if that was the case.

By saying he was blinded by the sun he's basically admitted to pulling out of the junction blind.

So much for the accuracy of royal biographers then. The duke stopped flying on 11th August 1997 at the age of 75. He did that because the CAA and his doctors told him he would not pass another medical. With no medical pass his pilot's license would not be renewed. Not only is the Hugo Vickers factually wrong, he can't even do simple maths to work out the duke was 75 at the time, not 55. Sloppy reporting by the BBC as well, because they should have checked the facts before broadcast.

Norfolk's Police and Crime Commissioner who lives nearby stated

“I really feel that I am taking my life into my hands whenever I have to cross the road at that junction,"

Why not wait and find out what actually happened before jumping to conclusions, for instance how fast were both cars travelling.

It's a massive change for anyone still driving to be forced to stop, as it typically curtails life and choices. We don't know his abilities but his safety would perhaps be better safeguarded by having professional trained protection officers etc.
