Because the army has a selection process maybe. They can’t accept people with mental health issues which some criminals have. Because it’s a bit unfair to compare being in the army as a punishment worse or the same as being in prison. |

When you were growing up? National service stopped in the 60’s.
We still have a tough security force, we don’t have an army anymore because we don’t have 100k soldiers.
Soldiers are prepared to die for their country, I’d say they were pretty tough.
I know I’d want someone protecting me that had gone through a stringent selection process to become a soldier, not some scrote who would stab you for a bag of spice. |

I didn't think that there was an official designated number that you had to have an army. |

The only way I believe it would be acceptable for the armed forces to recruit criminals is people who have been arrested for terrorism. Then they would only be used as point men on patrols, any ieds would explode on them. |

If you take out Gurkhas and reserves, our army isn’t as big as you’d hope.

You would have had to have committed a pretty serious crime to end up in prison as a teenager. Or a serial offender so I'm not sure how appropriate it would be to offer prison or army options in these cases. Early Intervention however is key so it could possibly be an option for very low level offending. |
