Ive been toying with the idea of learning to play an instrument(no penis jokes please). I always liked the saxamaphone but you have to do like 3 years of the clarinet first which put me off in school and is why I never went for it. I'm thinking maybe the piano or guitar but I wonder is it a bit late in life to try these 2, like are my fingers past their most nimble and agile states in which case I couldn't hope to be very good at it?
Anyway, I was just wondering if any of you have picked up a new skill recently and what age you were? Do you think there's a time in life when you really can't teach an old dog new tricks? |

I used to play saxophone... I had an alto and a tenor. Beautiful melodic sounds.
I want to learn bass guitar and singing lessons. As ever it's time and money but if you can find someone local to teach you go for it |

Good advice, thank you. Kudos too for being able to play the saxophone! I'm lucky to have a friend who teaches the sax and would give me lessons on the cheap but he would also want me to start with the clarinet. I hate the clarinet lol |

You don't need to start with clarinet. I didn't.... just went straight into sax. Loved it but not played in years |

Oh, I don't? I'll be having words lol maybe he just wants me at a level before he starts with me then. Though I mentioned school and he confirmed it so he was probably thinking "sweet, we'll see if he's serious or not first" lol |

10,000 hours its meant to take to master a new skill.
Which is why kids have such a head start. For an adults thats 5 and a half years equivalent to full time work |

Hey. I'm 42. I started playing guitar 2 1/2yrs ago. Always wanted to before but, well you know lol. Anyway, you'll pick it up in no time. 20-30mins a day practice and you'll not believe the progress. I consider myself very lucky with my tutor. Oh, i get lessons. I do know of many who learned from watching youtube videos but i like the interaction. Anyway, wish I'd done it years ago but so happy i did it. I love it. Whatever instrument you pick up, if you make time for it, you'll get it. If you find it hard finding time. I grabbed my guitar and practised in the ad breaks. After watching a movie, i had practiced for about 30 mins. Lastly, if you choose guitar....finger tip tenderness is temporary! Harmonica is next. |

It becomes slightly more difficult as you get older but I try to learn new skills or just simply continue my education all the time. I'm trying to learn Spanish and increase my knowledge of Queen Elizabeth the first and Tudor history all the time. My father and I attended language classes when he was in his 70s.
The more you do it the easier it is  |

Folks thank you for some great responses! I feel a little taken aback by the 10,000 hours mentioned as the length of time it's meant to take to learn a new skill. But then as was mentioned I can plug away each day, and the more I do it the easier it'll get. My next move is to decide if I definitely want to try the sax or if the guitar or piano would be a better option. All 3 instruments I like and would be interested in so I'll be happy with whatever choice I make |
