I was happy to see a Brit finally win Wimbledon but I’ve really never warmed to him so I won’t miss him at all.

This makes me so sad.

I'm a big fan.

He's given me and so many others so much joy over the years.

And a really nice guy, too.

Fabulous player and seemed like a really nice (and funny) guy. The way some of his teenage comments were used by the media to stir up controversy is pretty shameful.

His Olympic and Davis cup exploits showed him to be a very proud Brit as well as a proud Scot (not that I particularly care either way).

An all time great British athlete

He'll be a loss to Scotland and GB.

I don't remember too many negative front page headlines about him so it's sad to see it happen now.

He comes across as a drip but he should of been able to retire when he wanted to instead of it being forced through injury

Just read his interview, and he isn't sure he'll even be able to make Wimbledon.

I can't imagine he would even want to play there if he knew his last appearance would end so lamely.

It's horrible seeing people upset.

I agree. People give him a hard time for his on court manner, personally I think that's him showing his passion and its how he got his best performances.

He'll be sadly and sorely missed

NOT a tennis fan in general. From what I've seen he's always struck me as quite arrogant to the point of being rude.

Hearing him tearful on the radio, I felt no sorrow for him. Call me hard, but it's only the end of his tennis playing career. He can afford to have the operation he needs to give him good quality of life for the rest of his days and he's uniquely placed to continue a career in tennis in different roles.

It's hardly the end of the world. He can still play for fun and afford to never work hard again in his life. All because of a natural talent he's had the opportunity to follow.

My heart bleeds for people with real problems. Like soldiers who have limbs blown off and find themselves on the poverty line, or people with serious health conditions who have zero access to private medical care and forced to wait on the NHS whilst their appointments for surgery are delayed again and again.

Get a life Murray you priveledge Brat.

"Think everybody forgets how in his early career is anti English sentiment only in bracing English to further his career and his sponsorship deals.. "

I’m not sure a throwaway joke when he was what, 19?, actually meant he was ‘anti English’.

Think it’s a great shame really - he’s been fantastic for tennis and sport generally. He, as much as anyone in sport, has worked his ass off to achieve what he has, in a era when he was up against so many other great players.

That summer in 2012 when he lost Wimbledon but win the Olympic Gold a month later was a fantastic bit of sporting history.

I think the stuff about him being miserable is nonsense anyway - I thought by now people got that it’s more that he just hasn’t always been comfortable in the public eye at things like press conferences.

He was in the classroom next door, hiding beneath his desk, when Thomas Hamilton gunned down the class at Dunblane. He lost a lot of friends that day.

He could have signed for Glasgow Rangers as a 16-year-old but chose tennis instead.

He was baited about football by a scummy tabloid journalists when he was an immature 18-year-old.

He became a world champion in his chosen sport.

His record and his earnings speak for themselves.

His manner, dignity and generosity go unreported because he does not seek publicity for himself.

He is a star, an icon of his age.

Good job he didn't sign for Glasgow rangers as they died and he would now be in the hands of HMRC for tax avoidance.

As far as I'm concerned Murray only won things when Federer and Nadal were injured or off form.

He was never able to dominate the game. Just win the odd grand slam.

Which explains why he finished runner up more than a winner. He was not good enough when it came down to a fair fight.

Sports people in the lime light have a hard time of it with press and public opinion. I think the dedication they show to their sport and long hours they put in mean that for their career to end prematurely must be heartbreaking. Good luck to the guy.

Passion and a work ethic that many other sports people seem to lack.

Good role model and has spoken out against the inequalities in his and other sports for women..

It didn't bother me that he wouldn't support England at the world cup but I did find his constant bad moods a little bit annoying although very much admired his tennis skills and we will never any British player as good as him which is sad.

He said a daft thing as a throwaway remark when a journalist had been winding him up about the Scotland football team.

Heinous crime .

I don’t think England fans realise how hard it is to be a supporter of other sides in the UK when the England team (understandably) dominates the media to such a massive extent. I feel like a foreigner in my own land when Wales play England.

He’s become an impressive individual in my book - particularly his stance on women tennis players and pay.

I thought that was a bit weird too.

And some of the finals be lost, you could just as easily say Djokovic or Federer won because Andy had an off day. That he did as well as he did, including be ranked number one for nearly a year, in an era with three of the greatest ever players playing at the same time was a phenomenal achievement.

It’s quite flattering to see you quoting me yet again .

He cried a few times , usually to prove how much pain he was in , tears of pain rather than emotion until this one . His interviews are universally known to be dull , unimaginative and his monotone voice dominates them .

Why three anti English things ?

He certainly said he would cheer for whatever team England were facing , and was very vocal in his support for Scottish independence , that’s enough for me to form my opinion .

And that’s my opinion , one I’m entitled to have , and despite the guy being the best British tennis player we’ve seen in a generation , I’m certainly not the only one to have this opinion .

I think he’s shown quite a bit of emotion since he kinda won everyone over in 2012.

Why does it matter what his interviews are like? He’s a tennis player, not tv personality. It’s hardly a reason not like the guy. And he’s taken the piss out of himself quite a few times over the years on things like Sport Relief and SPOTY.

Three things because I thought it would be interesting to see if you could even think of three things, or if that opinion was based on a throwaway joke he was kind of egged on into making when he was 19. That that’s all it takes to decide that he is ‘anti English’ is kinda ridiculous.

Put it this way, would you like people to base their opinion of you on some throwaway joke you made when you were 19? And that’s not a rhetorical question.

Being pro Scottish independence isn’t the same as being anti English.

Being pro Scottish independence isn’t the same as being pro English either is it ? It leans more towards being anti than for in my opinion .

There are often threads on here saying what music or bands are over rated , and a fair few people always say the Beatles . I really can’t understand that at all , perhaps just as you can’t understand why I wouldn’t miss Andy Murray playing tennis . It’s one of those things .

As for being tarred with a brush from a throwaway joke from when I was 19 , no I wouldn’t like it , but I’ve never been in the public eye . The money he’s received from sponsorship etc.... has been given because of his talent , certainly not for his personality . I have always found him inexplicably boring . As you say , why does it matter what his interviews are like ? It doesn’t , but if as a result if them people find him boring then so be it .

"He was in the classroom next door, hiding beneath his desk, when Thomas Hamilton gunned down the class at Dunblane.

Well said couldn't agree more

Not really bothered personally he comes across as a self centred unplesent person I won't loose sleep over him disappearing into obscurity.

"My brains so messed up at the moment that I thought Andy Murray and Calvin Harris were the same person for a moment. Calvin’s new song came on and I thought ‘well it’s a shame he can’t so tennis but this is okay to fell back on’"

whats Calvin Harris new song?..I love how deep is your love!

I think Andy Murray made a rap record once but it didn't make the top 40!

It’s a shame he is having to give up due to injury.

I shall be sorry to see him give up.

I enjoy watching him

I remember back in 2010 telling my work colleagues that one day Andy Murray would win Wimbledon as I believe that after he survived the Dunblane school attack it was almost like god had spared him for a reason. In the history of world tennis in the open era which started in 1968 ( 51 years ago ) I would class him a good player after all he won 3 grand slams Novak Djokovic is the same age and has won 14 grand slams he is what I would class as a great. In the history of British tennis I would class him as a great after all there is not much competition and I think it may take another 51 years before his achievements are matched by a British player.

Absolutely gutted, but at the same time he's given me so many memories that I'll never forget! There's no point carrying on an embarrassing yourself. Go out how people remember you by. Thanks Sir Andy

Sad, but he is so miserably monotone, although I did feel for him watching that last media interview.

"He never showed any real emotion when being interviewed , hence his general miserable demeanor being the memorable thing with him . That and his monotone voice . And yes he did seem to be anti England , but to be fair he is the best British tennis player we’ve had in a generation .

But I don’t much like tennis so I certainly won’t miss him at all .

No, he never showed any real emotion.

Apart from all the times he cried.

What were the worst three anti English things he said in the last 14 years?

It doesn’t , but if as a result if them people find him boring then so be it ."

You’re right. Being pro Scottish isn’t the same as being pro English. Although now I’m confused. Are you complaining that he was anti English, or complaining that he wasn’t pro English? Given that he isn’t English, what sort of things should he have done to show that he was pro English?

I’m not really talking about you not missing him play tennis. It was more about why you would base your views of someone on some throwaway joke made when they were 19.

You said you wouldn’t like it if someone judges you like that, but you are happy to judge other stuff like that? Seems a bit of a double standard I guess. I don’t see how being in the public eye is relevant.

Without the public , here would be no money in the sport . So with the kind of money he’s earned ( and deserved ) the least he can do is try and be a bit more interesting when he’s interviewed . That’s all I’m saying .

moved to cuckold land

In his early days the "English (sorry British) media called him British when he won but somehow was always Scotlands Andy Murray when he lost.

So its not really surprising any scottish sports person would therefore take an opportunity to have a pop at the English media ad AM did about England at a World cup.

Def be missed ad unlikely be much GB interest in later stages of any Tennis Tournament going forward

I think it was an unwise comment, but the journalist had been ribbing him about the state of the Scotland team.

Kind of thing that would usually get left as banter, if it was two blokes in work etc. If it was the other way around and a Scot was complaining they’d be labelled a snowflake.

Regarding his demeanour - yeah his voice is dull, but I think he’s just a quiet, shy guy who’s uncomfortable with the media (can’t blame him after they blew up a throwaway comment into something massive full of manufactured outrage).

I like the guy.

actually my two best andy moments are no wimbledon related....

that lob that won the davis cup final for GB against belgium... i was glued that entire weekend and the man was a beast.... he did not lose a single set in singles at all that entire davis cup season...

he basically single handedly brought the cup home that season!

and the 2016 rio olympic final against del potro.... that was not a tennis crowd in that stadium, that was a full on football crowd, and the atmosphere was something else!!!

you have had a good one andy... i salute you!
