Random thought ... I was taught in metric but use imperial (ft, lbs etc) and don't like using metric. Saying I'm 1m something just doesn't sound right to me
What's your preference?

I use both. Whichever I can see first. 1m or 2m but I have to order wood in feet/inch. We never made a proper change and I think that’s why some (like you op) are still using it.

metric I’m 185cm whenever asked about my hight. I don’t know why the british have to complicate everything. Dricing on the left using different scales and plugs. |

I still talk a lot in imperial but flit between the two. Height, weight, cock size all in inches albeit I agree with F&B cock size sounds better in cms. 2.5 cms sounds much better than 1 inch |

I’m weird I was taught with metric and use it in my day to day life at work but if I’m measuring my height or weight or speed I’ll use imperial because it sounds right |

There and to the left a bit |
I can "visualise" things immediately in imperial - so if someone said to me they are so many feet and inches tall and weigh so many stones and pounds I'd know instantly their body type pretty much - tell me in metres/centimetres and kilos/grams and I wouldn't have a Scooby.
Likewise distances, volumes etc |

Exactly what I was going to say do imperial for me |

"Metric as 15cm makes my cock sounds bigger than 6 inches even if it is totally the same !
Don't mean to be picky... but 6 inches is slightly bigger ... =15.24cm
So... imperial"

I frequently use both. Awkward like that. But not when it comes to temperatures. Celsius is the only one that makes sense. 32 degrees Fahrenheit for freezing? Bonkers! |

And to be even pickier....
....anyone that works with metric doesn't use the cm as a valid unit of measurement.
It's always mm, so 6" is 152.4mm. |

Imperial. It's easier to visualise.
4 ft = 1200 mm
it's easy to judge 4ft as it's a lower number and we know our own height in ft

I can work with either, but prefer metric for building and engineering. Our motorways are still in miles but the markers are 100m apart. Aeroplanes still fly at heights in feet.. |

What confuses me about metric/imperial crossover is that why, long before decimalisation, i.e. 1950-60s why were all cat measurements in imperial except for the engine size? All clearances measured in thous of an inch but engines in cubic centimetres???? |

Probably a German influence, as they invented and refined engine design. |

The metric system wasn't really properly introduced until 2005ish in Ireland I think.
Myself and most people I know still talk in imperial, miles, stone etc. The kilometre road sign are kind of handy though, it takes around a minute to drive a kilometre so you can easily work out on average how much longer you'll be. |

Also takes a minute to drive a mile if doing 60mph |

For work it's metres, sq metres, linear metres.
Most cooking recipes still have measurements in imperial, metric and cups.
My height and weight are in imperial except when I go to the hospital or gp. |

Cars are so typical of this whole bodge up.
Fuel economy-mpg
Engine size-cc/litres
Gerry cans-gallons/litres
Road signs-miles
Boot sizes-litres
Tyres-inches
Tyre pressures-PSI and metric
Wheels-inches
Emissions-grams
It's also the same with pubs and restaurants
TV screens: inches
Pizza sizes: inches
Vodka shots: mls
Wine bottles: centilitres or litres
Beer pump: pints
Beer bottles: litres/mils
Beer cans: mils
Steaks and burgers: ounces
Subs: inches
Soft drinks: metric and imperial
As for supermarket milk, some dairies produce metric and imperial sized bottles.
I suspect it will stay like this for along time to come.

Driving on the left
In the early 1800’s, Napoleon invaded much of continental Europe and made everyone conform to the French method of driving on the right.
He didn’t manage to conquer the British Isles nor as far as Sweden, or Portugal or the Austro-Hungarian Empire - all of which continued on the left

Imperial for me. It all relates to the human body, the first joint of the thumb to the tip is an inch, a foot is about a foot and so on.
Metric pah! its just a French plot. |

probably because we have used imperial for centuries and if you research it you will find most of the measurements are based upon the male human body i e a fathom (6ft) and a hand(4 inches) (used throughout the world for horses) is approx the width of a mans palm! |

When I started work we had an on-site Carpenter who had a Dutch trainee, who even beffore he came to the uk used imperial as it is more accurate, have you ever tried to measure the 1/32 of an inch in metric. There is not way to do it.

Driving on the left dates back to the old jousting days when the lance was held in the right hand hence the riders passed each other on the left as that dwarf Napoleon was left handed he converted all the country’s he conquered to chance to the right

Oh dear
Imperial and metric are equally accurate
.7956 mm is your 32nd
Just as your 32nd is 0.03125 of an inch
Seems you do not understand maths or measurement
Accuracy is based upon the equipment used not the scale used
A wavelength of red light will be the same in feet ,, inches, meters, microns , or chains
The only significant difference between the two scales for an engineer or scientist is the simplicity that maths can be used with metric

Difference between practical and theoretical - yes it can be measured with a scale rule but 'chippies' are on a building site and are not precision engineers. |

I'm on the practical side ! Chippies do like to be accurate and metric of course gives them a very straightforward tolerance of 1mm increments
Generally I like plus minus .5 mm or a 50th of an inch they are the same to me
So for a chippy metric is better
Fred I want that 10 foot beam cut into 20 pieces
Fred maths
10 x 12 is 120 divide by 20 is 6 inch
Now into 32nds
Or that 3m into 20
300cm 20 15 cm
3 m 20 0.150 m
3000mm 20 1500 mm
Fred I now need one 22 percent longer
3660 mm |
