I used to be a bodybuilder but always counted weights by how many plates were on one side
My best bench was 3x 20kg + a 10kg plus the Olympic bar 20kg so 160kg total
Squats 210kg
I can’t remember my best deadlift |

My dad was a powerlifter back in the 80s did quite well. Won british european and worlds in the 110kg category. He won with:
Squat 370
Bench press 235
Dead lift 320
Total of 940.
I remember as a kid being totally bored by it. But love watching it now and im really proud of him as he was badly injured before he went to defend his world title |

Same competition as Mrs P for me.
Masters 40-44 years in the 110kg class. I'll probably come in around 108kg.
No idea on current maxes. 4 weeks left of my peaking programme and I'll have a better idea.
Last year to 18 months has been about rebuilding for me after injury and switching from strongman to powerlifting.
Much stricter on the lifts so I've had to retrain them all to meet PL requirements.
Only need a 510kg total to qualify for brits and I know I can do that in my sleep now.
I'd be happy with a 630kg total and then build from there.
Over the next few years. I'd like to get to 750kg+ but we'll see.

Training 3 days a week, focusing on those lifts.
Just building up the weights slowly, working on increasing my strength.
I've got a huge mental block over squats, since my spinal op I've only done them using the Smith or Kettlebells.
The whole thought of unsupported weight on my back terrifies me.

Can I ask what any of you lifters think of the 5 x 5 style of training? I'm thinking if switching to it to improve strength. Not sure my legs can handle squats three times per week though so may have to modify it slightly. I've been out of the gym for a few years so not really lifting great weights. |

Deadlift due to back.
Tonight I managed 70kg on bench and that was a real struggle so I won't be joining in with any competitions anytime soon.

But the big man reckons we can easily double that in 12wks.

I competed 2015/16 in strongman. Under 80kg 175lb in old money. Came 3rd in England strongest man under80 2015. Was due to compete at body power and uksm in 2017 but unfortunately had a major operation in January of that year so pulled out. The goal was competing at the Arnold classic and world finals but training hasn’t been the same since the op. And broke my leg in December which hasn’t helped. I’ll probably never be at the same level again as I’m knocking on a bit now. I’ve Switched my training around now to a more conventional bodybuilding style. May do a few shows in a few years in the masters category. It’s always great to see people pushing themselves and smashing their goals. Good luck to you in your competition. Be a lion |

I injured my left shoulder quite badly about 15 years ago benching 120kg, damaged the ligaments and tendons, never been the same. I got around that by using dumbbell press which isolats the chest. These days I use the cable machine for press and flys, now 47 inch chest instead of 42/43. Might be worth a try if you’re struggling. |

Trapped nerve has gone, attacked it with my hockey ball last night. Sore this morning but no nerve pain.
Bench tonight was good. Moving well, couple of singles at the end near my opening weight were easy after all the other work. |

Little update.
2wks of 'practise' & getting used to the lifts again.
I've added 15kg to my squat, 5kg to bench & today, 20kg to my deads.
I can't remember the last time I ached this much, but oh boy it's a good ache!
Monkey has written me a full training programme out, which I'll be starting next week.
I think he's trying to kill me |

No idea why I’ve never searched for people competing before. Hope everyone has had a great festive period and all the best for 2021 and hopefully some more comps. Been over a year since I’ve last fully tested as had a lot of arm/nerve issues from a bad bulging disc (joys of last time I played rugby)
I was back to training 4 times a week now I can feel in my hand again before latest lockdown
I’ve done 1 first timers strongman and 3 novice comps. I was due to compete at the Inters category at Bodypower so the injury and delay has been a bit of a blessing but no idea if or when Bodypower will go ahead with latest COVID tiers as NEC is currently in use as a hospital.
Anyway my numbers from last testing:
Deadlift (Raw) 220Kg
Bench 130kg
Log 105kg
Strict 100kg (my push press is crap lol)
Squat 210kg
My last testing phase was Oct 2019 though lol so really hoping rehab work and fixing bad habits they’ll change at end of first block....when that starts now who knows
If it goes ahead and anyone is around at Bodypower would be great to say hi and put same faces to the body parts lol
All the best |
