Further to my fraustration over the stabilisers- I went back to Halfords with the stabilizers and came out with a whole new bike!

Nope- but it was a physics problem fitting stabilizers to a bike with gears. The gears would have meant that the stabilizer on that side would have been a good deal (at least 2 inches) further out from the wheel on one side, hence the back wheel wouldn't have been central and therefore not balanced.

So I bought her a bike without gears, so that she can use the stabilizers for as long as she wants, until she asks me to take them off.

Oh and even though it was in the sale, I bargained another tenner off and a years free servicing. (Although I think they do that anyway)
