Christmas films don't just have to be heartwarming tales. Films set at Christmas, I think, are Christmas films. Home alone is about child neglect, a homicidal kid, burglary and sadistic violence yet that's still universally accepted as a Christmas film. So I think die hard 1 and 2, leathal weapon, iron man 3 etc are all Christmas films.

Die Hard isn't a Christmas film, I saw an interview doing the rounds on Youtube where he says the old tactic then was to put something Christmas related into a SUMMER film so it would still sell over the festive period. So they set it over Christmas even though it has literally nothing to do with Christmas.

If you think Die Hard is a Christmas film then so are all the Bond films and The Great Escape because you watch them at Christmas.

guy hasnt seen his estranged family in a while, each christmas eve some shit happens, theres a theme going through the film that it's christmas time..it is sorta the film's plot..therefore it IS a christmas film, just one that doesnt involve any sky fairies..though there are a few miracles in the way of groups of shitty henchmen who cant aim properly and explosions that only hurt the bad guys etc

Die Hard, Die Hard 2, Gremlins, Lethal Weapon, Iron Man 3. All set at Christmas. All released in Spring or Summer because - guess what - they’re not Christmas films. No more than Annie Hall, Mallrats and Cool Hand Luke are Easter films, or E.T. and Matilda are Hallowe’en films.

Claiming Die Hard and its ilk as Christmas films is the reserve of ‘edgy’ students who put a Power Ranger (or similar ‘comedy’ item) on the top of their Christmas tree in place of a fairy, or dribbling simpletons who think setting and theme are the same thing.

October isn't Xmas.

Die Hard has soooooo many Xmas references it can't be anything other than a Xmas film.

I still think its a Christmas film

guy hasnt seen his estranged family in a while, each christmas eve some shit happens, theres a theme going through the film that it's christmas time..it is sorta the film's plot..therefore it IS a christmas film, just one that doesnt involve any sky fairies..though there are a few miracles in the way of groups of shitty henchmen who cant aim properly and explosions that only hurt the bad guys etc

I thought it was just me who had noticed that the baddies have a really bad aim..Don't they give them any proper training?!"

it was christmas..even henchmen are allowed some mulberry wine...they really should make a movie about a baddie henchman just wanting to get home to see his loving family

I didn’t say October is Christmas, just pointing out that claiming it was released in summer is demonstrably horse-shit.

Having references to Christmas doesn’t make it a Christmas film. I feel a little sorry for you if that’s the level you always operate on.

I really dont know what people think IS a christmas movie..any other christmas movie, is just a drama movie...set at christmas..

As I previously said, we can nitpick what IS a christmas movie..but it would really have to boil down to something religious(i.e that celebrating somebody's birth 2000 years ago) to actually be a christmas movie.

after tight overweekend shift a henchman just wants to get home to his family, but has to take down the good cop hero, he knows his family will be in danger if he doesn't follow his boss's orders. Bruce can be the cop and arnie the villain.winner.

"Ok. So what defines a Xmas film then, pray tell.........?"

More than just the setting. Literally the only thing Die Hard (And the others I mentioned) have to do with Christmas is the time of year they are set. By that rationale, as I already mentioned, Cool Hand Luke is an Easter film and E.T. is a Hallowe’en film. Likewise, there are as many references to Christmas in Iron Man 3 as Die Hard, but you don’t seem to be championing that as a Christmas film.

Plot and, far more importantly, theme are what make Christmas films Christmassy. Neither the plot nor the theme of Die Hard are related to Christmas, only the setting. He says, “Ho ho ho, now I’ve got a machine gun,” because that’s funny in the setting, not because the film is about Santa’s unfaltering joviality.

So by that logic 'A Christmas Carol's isn't a Xmas film (or book of course) - as the plot is concerned with how Scrooge has basically been a cunt all his life and is visited by ghosts (in no way festive) in order to persuade him to change his ways.

The fact it's set at Xmas time is therefore just the setting and not essential to the plot. The message could have been portrayed as easily at Easter and he could have given Tiny Tim a fuck off great chocolate egg instead of a goose............

"No. Christmas is essential to the plot and themes. You’re being deliberately obtuse."

Why is it essential?

The plot is about wealth and injustice. His fiance left him because he loved money more than her. He witnessed the humility of the Cratchets. He basically learnt not to be a twat. No mention of Jesus. It just so happens to be set at Xmas.

Same with Die Hard. It's about wealth and injustice. The bad guys want to have the wealth. Bruce doesn't want them to as that's an injustice. He teaches them all not to be twats. Also set at Xmas.

Die Hard is as Chrismassy as A Christmas Carol.

Yep. Definitely a Xmas song.

Likewise in Die Hard it's about a husband travelling to make up with his estranged wife at Xmas. Just like the Nativity there's even a heavily pregnant woman featured.

There's no heavily pregnant woman in Elf - and nobody doubts that's a Xmas movie.............

I can't really remember what happened in die hard, I just remember it as an action movie not a Christmas film.

With home alone it's set at Christmas but other than that has sod all to do with Christmas. To me it's about bad parenting and the kid was lucky he was able to outwit the bad guys. Now the game on the mega drive was freaking awesome

Elf is obviously a Christmas film, it has an elf in it for a start and it's about delivering presents.

Lord of the Rings has an Elf in it and they're delivering a ring to Mt Doom.

"Its absolutly a christmas movie"
wrong when it was, first released it was classed as a summer blockbuster of that particular year .you can't have it being both a summer blockbuster and a Christmas film . just because its set at Christmas doesn't make it a Christmas film .its your typical one guy versus a group of bad guys .much like a Clint Eastwood type western .maybe a fistful of dollars is a Christmas movie then . Die hard is classed as a action thriller .most Christmas films have some sort of feel about them . what's good about a high body count .are all Christmas parties like this then

It's great that we agree it is a Christmas movie

"Somebody asked me yesterday what my favourite Xmas movie was and i said Die Hard 2 but they said it wasn't a Christmas film but about stopping terrorists who have taken over an airport...

What do you say?!"

Movies that are set at Christmas but don't have Christmas as the main focus are what I like to call Alternative Christmas Films.

Die Hard 1 and 2 certainly count as alternate Christmas films along with the movie Gremlins.

Both Die Hard and Die Hard II have Christmas songs, Christmas trees, Santa hats, snow and presents along with families trying to reunite for Christmas. It’s as much a Christmas movie as Home Alone, just with a few more guns and dead bodies.
