Coming off Citalopram & orgasms

I am about to come of Citalopram and am looking forward to it, because the meds really affected my orgasms, as in they became virtually non-existent. Does anyone have experience with this and how quickly does everything get back to its old pre-meds self? Tia x  |

I experienced this whilst on the drug, but apologies I don't remember how long it took back to get to "orgasm normal". I do remember the frustration trying to reach orgasm whilst on the drug though.
Been on several others and they tend to have similar effects however I've battled on through lol I can reach orgasm in certain positions etc xx

I can reach orgasm with enough time & patience, but when it comes, it’s also generally quite a disappointing one too! I’d like a good old orgasm again, like before. I hope I am not permanently broken! |

When I started taking citalopram I lost the ability to cum for a few weeks. It was infuriating!! Could still have sex and still wanted to but took me ages to cum. Was embarrassing and felt crap. Doesn’t seem to be a problem anymore though! I hope coming off them works for you! |

I only have a week of them left (after 3 m of slowly reducing), I think i’ll probably find out the answer before I’d get to see the GP! They never warned me about the side effect too. It was a disappointing discovery, I tell ya. Worth it for the non-sexy times of my life though. I think Mr RP would agree. |

I’ve gone over to Sertraline & that’s doubled my sperm production which is beyond weird. |

Citalopram I struggled orgasmically (is this a word lol )
Sertraline I just wasn't horny so I don't know how my orgasm would be.
Fluoxetine no difference
Venlafaxine it differs dramatically ( not sire Om on the right dose / meds etc)
Important thing is that people are taking meds as prescribed and coming off them / weaning off them under the advice of gp/ cmht .
Its wonderful to hear of people getting through he tunnel to the light at the end and coming off meds. Enjoy your orgasms ! May they be earth shattering. An update would be fun too lol. But that's just cos I'm a perve   |

My ex was prescribed Citralopram towards the end of our relationship, and I think the medication contributed heavily to the sex literally drying up in the last few months. Arousal became much harder, what was one of the moistest pussies I'd ever been in lost about 80% of that, and satisfaction was hard to achieve, I wonder how much of what we at the time, put down to growing tired of each other, was due to the mental and physical effects of the meds. |

im on a similar drug called escitalopram i was on citalopram had no sex drive now im on the new medication its all back to normal thank god good luck ?? |

I weirdly didn’t lose sex drive, probs because it was really low due to depression anyway. I could get arroused quite easily, it’s just the orgasms.
Coming off has been under GP, slowly & successfully. I feel much much better after tackling the root causes of it all.
Onwards & upwards now, right? |

Hey Tia....you ask a very complex question and tbh there is no simple answer and there is individual variation too.So a rough estimate is 4-8 weeks possiably more and this is after youve weaned yourself of SSRI.The only word of caution I have is to watch out for rebound depression look out for the signs.
Stay positive excercise and eat healthy ...enjoy life its a gift. |

Thanks for the detailed answer and word of caution. I will keep looking after myself. Mr RP has been supportive too. I made a fair few changes to my life over the last year and they are what needed to be done to get to this point. Previous attempts to come off weren’t successful. I couldn’t even drop from 40-30mg. Am now on 10, so so far so good. One big thing I found is yoga. It helps me so much + keeps me flexible at the same time  |

I used to take that myself and for pleadure used viagra.. omg did my gf used to get it.. was banned off viagra in tge end but i loved tge effects |

Honestly for me it was quite a slow improvement. I had some improvement after just a couple of weeks but it was about a year before things fully improved and even then I don't feel like it's ever been 100% back to how things were before but it's about 95% so I'm happy. |

Omg when I was on sertraline I didn’t cum for months and my doctor kept fobbing me off saying it was all in my head. Which ironically, didn’t help with my anxiety |

I was on citalopram, had a couple of stints on it. Oddly, the first two days, my orgasms were actually ridiculous, felt like my head was gonna explode, felt amazing. Down side, I was way to anxious to take advantage of it! |

I’ve been on it for exactly 8 years. Been slowly reducing & currently on 20mg & hope to be free by the end of the year. I’m also on hrt so my body is 1 big mess & not sure which meds are causing the lack of sex drive. Luckily once in the mood it’s fantastic. T is so patient with me & there’s no pressure which helps

As I understand it.. Anti depressants are mood stabilizers.
They level EVERYTHING off. Drives, ambitions, physical responses.
They do this so that you can work through the cause off depression without your emotions doing all that rollercoaster hi lo stuff.
They regulate serotonin and dopamine responses..your two main reward brain chemicals.
The effects are cumulative over time..takes time to build in your system and consequently take time to drain away. Then your body takes a little time to work out it needs to provide its own regulation and starts to normalise.
5 htp (hydroxytriptophan) you can get it from holland and barret...Im told its an amino acid that your body uses to make serotonin...it may help you readjust quicker..talk to the counter staff first tho.

It's a feature of many anti depressants due to the mechanism in which they work.
Citalopram I was on for about 4 or 5 months but had to come off as it exacerbated suicidal thoughts but made it very hard to orgasm. Swapped to sertraline and it was the same re orgasms.

5htp won’t work for everyone it did nothing for me. I personally wouldn’t start taking any supplement like this when coming off ssri’s or if I was taking them. People run the the risk of Serotonin syndrome which is highly dangerous |

Bit of advice for the thread as I’ve just read about 5htp that someone recommended. If you’re on SSRIs or any other antidepressant. Please DO NOT buy and start taking this without consulting you GP or prescribing doctor for your mediation as you will run the risk of Serotonin syndrome which is HIGHLY DANGEROUS. I work in mental health and have done for well over a decade so I have a good understanding of this topic. I can’t urge you all enough to not follow advice of here that recommends taking something that could potentially have deadly consequences!!!! |

Most H&B staff won’t have a clue about serotonin syndrome and you’d be surprised how freely shops will sell supplements without asking appropriate questions. It’s very dangerous offering such a suggestion to take something when people are clearly talking about medication. Especially when that thing could lead to death. |

I came off Citalopram about a year ago, it affected me deeply in so many ways, it has affected my ability to get hard as this used to happen instantly and now I have to get worked up. It affected the length of time I could last for, I used to be able to last for hours and can now only do about half and it takes me longer to recover. I’m wondering how long it takes until the side affects completely disappear and I get back to normal. |
