It's an old term used by Grenouillère in France, English translation Frog catcher..
The frog catcher would sneak out early in the morning when the frogs were just waking and stretching their legs and getting ready for their first cafe of the day.. and before the frogs could light their first Gitanes, they would be caught and put in a box..
Now anybody who has smoked and had a caffeine addiction will know how mad you feel in the morning when being deprived of your two main stimulants, hence, as mad as a box of frogs...
