Apparently if you run over a dog you have to report it to the police but not if you run over a cat. Something i found out recently.

I wonder if that applies to ride-on mowers too.

Correct, it goes back hundreds of years, basically all the animals kept as livestock. I think dogs were taken out of it a few years ago because they’re predominantly a domestic animal nowadays.
