I’m feeling particularly down at the moment, I’m not convinced they got it, my throat seems to be getting worse, now in the last 4-5 days I’m in consistent pain in my right shoulder, so bad I can’t get comfortable, can’t sleep, it’s horrid.. I’m so tired of being ill

So had a good Christmas girls cooked and I had a restful day, thing I noted, can’t eat chocolate, crisps, crackers

Everything you think of over Christmas is tough to digest

To swallow I have to use water

Otherwise it’s sticks in my throat, it’s existence not living!! Hi

Just so it’s out there, throat cancer or neck cancer, the treatment kills off the saliva glands mine went after 1st week, so even now I don’t really havecsaliva as you all do, eating food is difficult without a small amount of fluid as you just can’t swsllow it!

Sat eating a crumpet with a glass of water as it gets stuck in my throat otherwise..

It’s not a great experience but that’s life I guess

Further to my post on HPV

Some details on radiotherapy of the neck mouth and head area. See swallow cancer support group..

Radiotherapy weakens the bone structure of the jaw, if I get hit in this area my jaw will likely shatter, if I have a tooth out the hole may not heal correctly and am likely to get an absis

I will most likely never get saliva back to normal, so my saliva is snot like mucus, making chocolate, crisps, cake, biscuits vertually impossible to eat withou water.

Food in general is difficult to swallow if dry, this includes sandwiches. It gets stuck in my throat and I have to swallow water to dislodge..

I have a lump or swelling at the front of my neck Mack it look like I have a fat double chin,

I still am not putting weight on

But still here!!!

Xx

This all sound exactly like what I went thriugh 2 years ago. I had cancer of the throat too. The tonsil to be precise. Firstly a tonsilectomy then 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemo. This basically microwaved the back of my throat. Creating one huge ulcer on the back of the throat and tongue. Taste almost destroyed and as you say no saliva. All conspired to make eating and drinking a virtual impossibility.

But it improves. Slowly most of your saliva increases. I still need to drink a lot at mealtimes but everything so much better two years on. The swelling in your neck most likely a Lymphodaema. You need to massage this away. I was taught how to do this at the local cancer clinic. It can be very painful otherwise.

I have no saliva. I have just spent time in hospital because of an inflammed partoid gland due to no saliva.

I saw a nurse whoy is a specialist in head and throat cancers and she gave me tips and samples of medication that helps. Maybe you could see if your area has a nurse specialist like this ? Also the samples she gave me are available on prescription from your GP. I can give you the names of these products if you want. I have used them for a couple of hours today and gone from no saliva to actually having some

Ps there is stem cell reasearch into this, hopefully more help in the future.

Never had MRI take an hour, but it did..this morning my neck was really sore

Seen a thread about painkillers

Tea and porridge gives me instant acid reflux. Some foods are worse for it then others and tea makes everything so much worse.

You might be able to take Omeprazole or Lanzoprazole if you speak to the hospital.

Just had second monthly check up still all good, but seeing speach therapist in Worcester to try and help reduce the swelling on my throat, and try and help with the narrow passage I now have to swallow, this is very difficult to eat solid foods now..

Digestion is still an issue I’m continually in gaviscon to try and keep food down, otherwise like yesterday I get bad heartburn and retch most of it back up!

So it’s been months since I posted about this, thought I should update my blog, so 1st year of remission went very well, I’m doing fine, then in November I had a TIA (mini stroke) blinded me temporary in my right eye, then eyesight was out of focus and extremely dizzy. (Symptoms so you are aware)

They scanned my neck, ultrasound in emergency ward. So I found out the intensive radiotherapy has killed everything in my neck, my thyroid gland, lymph glands etc.

They told me that they more or less expect minor strokes as par for the course as my arteries have shrunk due to the treatment

It’s very scary stuff really, so I discussed a few things with my doctor and decided to give up work, I can’t be around stress anymore.

So this is really where I am today, thanks for reading the entire thread is still on here for those who haven’t read this.

Just search cancer of the throat.

I would like to add I’m one of the lucky ones, I have for now escaped death. Each week that goes by is a week more I had that I probably shouldn’t have had..

Yet earlier this month I got the news s close friend died of his cancer. An ex swinger too.

RIP

Adrian Porter

RIP

Adrian Porter

Very poignant..sorry for your loss Stella and good luck with your recovery xx"

Thanks xx

So here we are 2 years ago I started this blog on throat cancer, this is just an update on the story and where I am now.

So after the cancer and therapy life changed

I have to take pills each day to stop me physically being sick, this is because my throat and gullet is narrowed, eating is ok but can be difficult, dry food like chicken, bread, crisps etc

I can’t really eat well, it takes two to four goes to swallow each mouthful, scary I guess as it’s like choking sometimes..

So I’m guessing I take in more air, my stomach then cramps and it creates pain and eventually vomit

Thank goodness I get these ills to help, now since November 2019 (minor stroke due to arteries thinned in neck) I’m also on medication to ensure I don’t have issues with another stroke etc..

Taste, covid 19 symptoms no taste or lack of taste. (Some would say Stella the way you dress it’s obvious you have no taste lol)

Well I still struggle with anything caramel like, even beer doesn’t do much in the flavour dept.

But, normally it’s ok, I do have moments when I just can’t really taste things, gravy being one of these issues, yesterday’s chilli con carne, nope no taste as such!!

Anyway all in all I’m ok, walking lots, with a broken vertebrae it’s been very painful walking, but seems to be getting stronger all the time..

I guess I am trying to say I live for today, I enjoy fresh challenges and have taken on and bought a huge renovation project in France

So there is still life in Stella, but she may not be around on here much longer

Age and these issues have made me feel a lot older now..

But few glasses of good old H Weston’s helps!!!

Bon voyage to all of you x

Do you remember me messaging you about my cancer story and you asked me to post it on your thread as inspiration to others? It was a long time ago... lol

So glad to see you've got the same amount of fight and humour that you had back then. I know how people saying hour brave can make you sometimes feel... i knew you had the fight in you back then and so glad you proved me right. Your a wonderful woman. Fuck cancer!

Hi Stella, my mom has recently been diagnosed with cancer in her throat. She’s waiting for her op as they’re going to lazer the tumours rather than try to remove them. X

Stella stay on top of your throat. There is a bug (not the covid one) going round but you cannot afford to take the chance. Think of the relief once you know. Not knowing is driving you crazy.

"I’m feeling particularly down at the moment, I’m not convinced they got it, my throat seems to be getting worse, now in the last 4-5 days I’m in consistent pain in my right shoulder, so bad I can’t get comfortable, can’t sleep, it’s horrid.. I’m so tired of being ill"
my dad had throat cancer and he had chemo and it went. Anyway in may he had a pain in his shoulder and kneck at the bak. Turned out he has cancer in his spine and he died 2 weeks later

So update is due, since December I have been in constant pain in my right arm

Initially I thought it was tennis elbow, as my elbow is really tender, but the aching pains go Down through my wrist into my fingers etc, now getting pain in my shoulder too, wearing a wrist splint now permanently it doesn’t really help..

But, hey I do as am told, it seems they think it’s nerve damage caused by the intensive radiotherapy I had back in autumn 2018..

God is it that long ago...

I’m seeing a consultant Monday and will update then..

All the best, love you all lots

Stella xx

Sending best wishes Stella. I too was diagnosed with cancer in November. I'm struggling not only to come to terms with it, but also with the flipping awful treatment. And, I also have had tennis elbow for ages.

Sorry to hear that, remember the treatment is necessary and it’s unbelievably hard on you, but Once completed it does get better, the worst period for me was the last week and the two weeks after completion, but then improvements on a daily basis..

Good luck and best wishes

X
