Black Labour MP Dianne Abbott tweeted "white people love playing 'divide & rule' we should not play their game".

Naughty Dianne, naughty! Generalisations based on race should never be accepted.

I agree ... But some people think her comments can not be racists as she is Black. I disagree, I think anyone can be racist, be they white, black asian or whatever ... It is the person that is racist not the skin colour they are in !!

As far as I am aware not apology has been given by her, just some rubbish about it be out of context..

She has tried too.

BBC WEBLINK (SAFE)

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-16423278

However her comments make her just as bad, as those she condemns, in her fight against racism. She should have known better not to make any "colour/race" comment at all.

"Tweet taken out of context. Refers to nature of 19th Century European colonialism. Bit much to get into 140 characters."

Dont see how her original tweet refers to that in anyway.

And her excuse of could not explain properly in 140 chars is invalid anyways as she has in the post replied using multiple tweets.

She was be racist, and she knows she was.

Ah this would be the so-called socialist who sends her children to public school and pays her cleaners £7 per hour when the going rate is at least £10 per hour.

Clearly she needs to do a little reading. Sending one's children to public school, exploiting employees and seeing things in terms of race is not concomitant with being a socialist.

Very crass idiot remark made even worse by the excuse of 'it was taken out of context'. Anyone could use that line when they e been pulled up on something.

If she made a racist remark, and not only white people are racists, then she should be punished in the same way as everyone else is.

A politican, in a position of power and influence, making such crass remarks - who'd have thought it eh

Time for Abbott to go I'm afraid, not her first gaff but maybe her most ridiculous to date, only right for her to stand down at the next election at the latest.

She hasn't been taken seriously in the Labour party for some time now.

I think it's high time that the party leaders began to instruct their flock not to Twitter anymore, some things are best left in the House.

Been doing a bit of research and back reading on twitter.

Apologies if the terms black and white offend, but it's just easier...

Seems she was in a discussion in relation to "black communities" and "black community leaders".

These terms "black communities" are all brought about by "whites" from the slave trade brought about by the 19th century colonialism of europe, and in general terms are used by the news corps to specify one section of society or a minority in society eg race or cultural background.

Thesedays we all live in one community together, whites, blacks, asians etc you get the idea.. however you still get the sectioned communities brought about or talked about.

The divide and rule comments is in relation to the culturally and ethnically mixed populations and as well as racially divided populations - hence "divide".

When you look at only the one tweets everyone is on about, yes it looks racist.. however if you look at the conversation in it's entirety you will see it's actually quite heavily involved, and how it's been taken out of "context".

No not racist.. just silly to have had such an well educated debate on a open minimal forum where her comments could have been taken wrongly (which they where and by many).

You can see from the out cry on the news, that the whole story isn't being covered.. and the full facts are not being portrayed.

No change there then.. one sided news coverage..

I see like a few others you are not really understanding the point. We understand the history of this, we understand what divide and rule means.

But she was saying that it is a white mans policy, she was lumping all whote people together (basically doing the samething she is complaining about).

People are up in arms as it made it seem like she though all white people are the same. Even people in her own party, who would have read the comments very careful have seen that they where not needed.

agree totally, divide and rule is a fact, both of 19th century colonialism and the modern lack of class consciousness. Twitter was not the ideal forum as she immediately said. The modern world is so unused to intelligent debate that 140 characters is too many for some.

Of course it is racists. It would be like me saying that all germans are anti-Semitism or that all black people believe in Voodooism.

Not all white people, even in the time believe or believed in D&R. Many fought against it. It was also not just a white policy, many black nations used it and some still do, look at Zimbabwe.

Having read the context, she is right, that it is taken out of context, but, but, but. She did say what she was thinking, just like everyone else does, and what she said has to be seen as racist even by her own standards of judging people with the same skin colours as all the same.

by the way, she is Shadow Health Secretary.

and the tweet was part of a discussion/debate/willy waving on twitter with a female, freelance journalist, for the Guardian! who also appears to have similar heritage to Ms Abbott.

Reading article Bim Adewunmi has written they seem to be a little of the stirring side, from dating sites to race issues.

Abbott is Shadow Public Health Minister, which is not a full Shadow Cabinet position...

But yes she should resign this position for her ill worded Twitter, I can hardly see the Met Police becoming involved in any investigation into racism though....worse things are voiced by MP's all the time, it's hardly a Race Hate crime after all....

Taken in full context it's an ill judged comment.....little more.

She had the nerve to accuse everyone else of 'misinterpreting' her comment. If a white MP had written this about black people he or she would have been forced to resign. Abbot should resign - she's set race relations back many years.

Something we all need to remember is that all MP's get coaching in how to handle the press. She is fully aware of how the press can manipulate things to their own advantage. She is also aware that twitter is an open forum and therefore at the very least she was unwise to have an open debate with a member of the press in such a forum whatever the context.

"white" or "black" people is the definition.

whites/news corps call them the "black community".

you dont get black people calling them the "white community" do you?

Thats the whole issue, and why it's been misinterpreted.

She has been the local MP for 24 years, I think that shows that most of her constituents don;t see her as a 'Horrible piece of work'.....which is all that is important regarding her being re-elected so many times.

"She had the nerve to accuse everyone else of 'misinterpreting' her comment. If a white MP had written this about black people he or she would have been forced to resign. Abbot should resign - she's set race relations back many years.

"white" or "black" people is the definition.

whites/news corps call them the "black community".

you dont get black people calling them the "white community" do you?

Thats the whole issue, and why it's been misinterpreted.

It the mostly the black people in are communities that set themselves apart. You have the MoBo Awards, African Caribbean centres. You have groups of black men going around saying black power, my black brothers and sisters. As long as we let this gone on we will have racisim.

A problem is a lot of people like gathering into groups of there own kind. Look at the ExPats in Spain, Asians in the midlands. Blacks in London Boroughs

It has been like this since the Tower of Babel. Men is a sociey animal and will always try to live in a group.

To say the all reason why we do this is because of the white men is so racist !!

All this has shown is that every creed & colour has the propensity to make inappropriate comments and that racism is not merely confined to the majority

Perhaps it may make those on the left who shout racism every time an ethnic minority is criticised take stock and adopt a more even handed _iew - although I doubt it!!

"Black Labour MP Dianne Abbott tweeted "white people love playing 'divide & rule' we should not play their game".

Naughty Dianne, naughty! Generalisations based on race should never be accepted. "

Totally agree..and obviously it cannot go unnoticed that the above comment has come from a black guy who isnt going to jump on her own racist bandwagon..total respect to you for that fella..

I have no time for that woman..total loon with a massive chip on her shoulder..I remember her and her clown friend Livingstons comments after the riots..

Im surprised she didnt joined them as she seemed to feel they were so justified..comments like that and people like her like that do race relations in this country no good whatsoever..

Those sort of comments stir up trouble on both sides of the divide..some of her followers will say 'right on Diane'...and white people will say 'she wouldn't be able to get away with sating that if she was white'..

And the fire gets stoked again..which is a shame because people (at long last) are finally starting to tolerate each other more than ever..

I think Diane Abbott has let her guard down for a second and the mixed feelings she holds towards anti-racism and white people has slipped through.

When one campaigns against racism, and one sees evidence of it moreso than most people because of the campaigning one does, it must be difficult not to be affected by the racial intolerances one encounters. I don't see Abbott as a racist, but I do think she needs to take a step back from anti-racism issues and rediscover herself somewhat.

Sometimes one can get just that little bit too close to what one is fighting for.

Kind of sums up how I feel about Abbott Wishy, it has taken over her life to the point that she is tipping on the scales.

She has been a tireless member of parliament for a very long time and attends the house more than the majority of MP's and is often to be found backing very small but important issues at late night sittings.

She should do the right thing and step down from her junior shadow position and show she is a woman of honour....which I am sure she is.

Oi why arent u at the bedside....

Racism is tied up with oppression, therefore whilst a black person in this country can be discriminatory some would argue they cannot be racist...they would have to be in a county where they held power...

living in taiwan we were definitely on the recieving end of racism, for example it was common for landords to refuse to rent to whites ,one reason given was that our food would smell funny and annoy neighbours.

That said i am uncomfortable with any definition of racism that doesnt include personal prejudice...so whilst i understand the racism comes from a position of power argument i am not sure i am 100% convinced.

Only those who wish to pursue the oppression argument will tie racism up with it to back up their argument.

Racism is any form of prejudice against a person or persons based purely on their colour.

in my opinion was it racism? no

was it an idiotic thing to say in her position? yes

the racism card gets thrown around so carelessly these days that i personally feel it detracts from the genuine issue of racism and makes many blase about it sadly

my friend last christmas was pulled in and questioned about a racist remark she made to a muslim taxi driver on christmas eve after a night out, she quite simply enquired "are you looking forward to christmas?" now does that make her racist or someone who simply saw a taxi driver not a muslim taxi driver, situations like this wear on peoples nerves so as soon as racism is mentioned eyes get rolled and its not taken as seriously as it should be sadly

sorry i think i have completely lost my point in there somewhere but i know what i mean

You have to remember that there are those who are part of a sectarian opposition who will latch onto any perceived transgression against their core beliefs and lodge a complaint with the authorities simply to clog up the system and utlise expensive resources that could be better used elsewhere. It's the age old peaceful demonstration as employed by people like Mahatma Ghandi etc.

It isn't racist to inquire if someone had a nice Christmas regardless of whether they believe in it or not but the police have to take every complaint seriously, even if they think it is a blatant and deliberate waste of resources.

Given the current media focus and recent events… it was a pretty dumb ass thing to say…. of course it was going to be picked apart, over analysed and twisted into whatever shape it was required to be, to make whatever point someone wanted to make.

When people get into such a massive debate (and I don’t just mean on here) about someone using the word ‘white’ or ‘black’ and the word ‘racism’ is banded about like a thong at a strip club…. I start to wonder where it will all end. Will the average Joe become apprehensive when nipping into Starbucks and asking for a ‘black coffee’ for fear of people leaping from their comfy sofas and stools to point and shout “You racist bastard!”

For someone in her position it was an utterly stupid generalisation to put into type….. but to make it into a full blown debate on racism and whether she is indeed a racist … well, I think that does nothing to help those who are challenging the real hatred face of racism. Society becomes the boy who cried wolf.... leaving the wolf free to prowl.

Many people as reported in the papers, have been visited by the police for just doing and saying things that have offended some, whatever the intention.

So Ms Abbot needs to be visited by 'someone' to explain how simple words can cause offence to others...

How's that?

I don't think her tweet was a racist comment but it has racial implications so therefore she deserves the sack. Had a white mp said something about an ethnic minority group........

The worst thing about this is that she is a bloody MP! She is in a position of power and influence. Although she is not a nasty racist, there are people who will see that tweet as inspiration in their hate filled lives.

She should have known better. I think people of such position should have a twitter account of their own but have one run by her office staff with updates and to ask questions. That's what president Obama and the German boss lady have...

I tell you what when black people can unlawfully kill white people in public & get away with it or travel to another country & kill & enslave others in the name of Christianity or where hoods going round killing other races or when majority of white people are poor & are look down upon & can't get into certain schools or jobs because of it. & if this happens to you for say 10 years atleast then you can start calling black people racist but until no! Black people can't be racist ignorant is the best your gonna get "

So when an asian taxi driver called me a white trash slag he was not being racist becasuse he had not been oppressed for the past 10 years ? Are you related to Dianne abbot ?? I think your still living in the stone age with your comments. The scales of Equality diversity is more in favour of the minorities these days.

"Black Labour MP Dianne Abbott tweeted "white people love playing 'divide & rule' we should not play their game".

Naughty Dianne, naughty! Generalisations based on race should never be accepted. "

How many chances is this person allowed without being reprimanded on her outspoken racist comments. It was only a short time ago when she was saying black mothers would go the extra mile for her children, infering that white mothers would not.

As well as a racist she is also a hypocryte after her comments on private schools then sending her own children to one. She should be sacked.

State the colour of your desire as long as it's black.

Buttons and belt come in off white only

The size is foolscap and the cap itself has a fitof pique.

The boots are longer than the gaps between Abbots prejudiced remarks but shorter than a week in politics.

Laws are not always correct and are there to be challenged and changed.

I didn't mention law and wouldn't ever presume to speak on behalf of the forum or make up forum laws.

My stance remains.

The comment was racist. Diane Abbot made a racist comment.

From the Telegraph.... by Toby Young

But in playing the race card, was Diane Abbott herself being racist? According to the OED, racism is defined as "the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races". By that definition, Abbott was being racist. She was attributing a characteristic – loving to play divide and rule – to a race – white people – and it's plainly an unattractive quality, i.e. intended to distinguish the race in question as morally inferior to the people they're guilty of oppressing.

It's particularly irresponsible of Diane Abbott to say something like this, implying that "white people" are intent on keeping black people down, since she's the UK's most prominent black leader. The mistaken belief among some black Britons that "white people" are all, without exception, anti-black – that they're all, effectively, racist – is a huge source of racial tension. As a prominent black politician, Diane Abbott should be doing what she can to defuse this tension rather than cranking it up. Or does she actually share that belief? In which case, she's not simply guilty of saying something racist. She is a racist.

And what you said just Three days ago Wishy...

"I think Diane Abbott has let her guard down for a second and the mixed feelings she holds towards anti-racism and white people has slipped through.

Sometimes one can get just that little bit too close to what one is fighting for."

I'm well aware of what I said three days ago. I'm also well aware that one has to explain one's words to the umpteenth degree as there are those who jump on the tinest of detail and read into it somethign that isn't there. I knew that when I posted subsequently condeming Abbott for her racist _iews.

What I didn't know three days ago was how many times in the past she'd come out with racist remarks even worse than the one she tweeted.

She's not someone I've paid much attention to in the past, and now I know that she is a racist she's not someone I'll be paying much attention to in the future either.

hardly an impartial source tbh..

yes she fecked up, she may have actually forgot to to put the word 'some' before 'white people'..

which changes the whole thing..

or it could have been a deliberate ommision..

it was by definition or otherwise a racist comment..

is she fit to hold a position in a shadow 'cabinet', nope 'cos its not her first feck up.. the schools issue was worse but predictable for 'our' politicians imho..

lets be honest here..

does anyone actually think that she thinks that ALL white people are racist?(and has allways done so during her public and political life)

surely any such tendencies would have shown themselves before now...

not sure if she was phone tapped, pc hacked etc by the media but she would have been on the list for those papers on the right to have been looked at..

not keen on her myself but just dont buy the 'she is racist' _iewpoint..

At some point most if not all of us will accidentally/thoughtlessly/unintentionally, or through a moment of brain function stalling whilst the fingers are still in gear, make comments which are something ‘ist’; usually through over-generalising, missing out ‘most’ or ‘some’ from a sentence or a momentary blinkered focus on one aspect of a discussion.

Being one of the white folks who should so obviously feel oppressed, disadvantaged and beleaguered by this woman’s overtly racist attitude, I somehow don’t feel I am sharing the fear, repression and abhorrent torment to the same intensity as those who wake every morning to see if someone else has painted ‘paki bastard’ on their front door. I will continue to walk down my street without the need to cross the road to dodge spit balls and stones. I won’t even be apprehensive of finding dog shit on my carpet under the letter box.

Therefore, I won’t be jumping up and down at the twittering of a woman who has suffered that oh so human quality of ‘putting their foot in it’ yet again. When I point at someone to truly brand them a ‘racist’, I want it to mean something. I want it to mean they carry an irrational and repulsive hatred fuelled by prejudice and ignorance. I want it to mean they are an out and out cunt; and have no desire to lessen how much of a cunt being a racist makes them by diluting the meaning on people who merely qualify as being a bit of a twat.

If it was a white person making such comments about black people, they would have been sacked, the fact she is a black racist rather than a white one its probably the fact,,, she is black and her superiors are scared of sacking her because she is black.
