i have owned an ex police car a few years ago. I had a skoda Octavia vrs which came direct from Hertfordshire police. We got full police history with it showing literally everything it had ever had done. Was a great car and in the 3 years we had it it never had any issues at the time they were going for around 5 k but I paid 3 k for it due to it being ex police. Would defo buy another one with out hesitation

Did you get it via auction or direct from police?

Buy direct from police auction it's free to register and bid if you buy from other auctions they have most likely been purchased already and abused before being sold on

Best serviced vehicles on the road ...serviced and inspected religiously..so much so that they don’t require an mot. There’s no ifs or buts ..needs a clutch or gearbox ? Gets done ..

Yes they can get hammered ...and what does that do ? Screws suspension, drivetrain and engine ....which would then be replaced as required .....by genuine parts...no pattern parts are used ...

Very well maintained but generally abused, with big holes cut in dashboards and other places (none critical), holes drilled where normal people wouldn't, and now stopped with bungs. At least when you buy it you know it will have been maintained and checked before sale as plod don't want any backlash. The Blues Brothers did okay...

Hiding in the shadows

Ok, I'm going back a few years, but I had one.

It had been through 3 other family members before being passed on to me.

Between us we had it for 10yrs & never a problem with it.

It was a MkI escort, I got it in 1988 my 3 cousins all had it as a 'first car' it was given to be when I passed my test.

If they look after their cars now, like they did then. You'll be OK x

out in the sticks

We had an ex armed response car was high miles but very well looked after. As others have said they want for nothing if it needs fixed it’s done. You may have to put up with the odd screw hole in the dash where they have removed equipment. Alert from that they are all good. We wouldn’t hesitate in buying another.

You will be exceptionally lucky if you can find one with only 100k after 3 years.... the average for a police car is around 50k - 60k per year

Just have a look at the TV programmes about traffic police, that should put you off buying an ex police car!

Hubby had a t5r county car . Close to 400k when he got it. Tight as a drum. We put another 90k on it. Only things that went on it were two punctures and drivers side door latch mechanism. One of the best cars he’s ever owned

Something not right there , mk1 escorts ceases production in 75 so it would if been 13 minimum in 88.

I've got a mk2 escort and a few others rare escorts ,my first car was one too

regular serviced and any repairs are done properly, the company next to my work does ambulance maintenance every vehicle goes there every few weeks for another service and full check, as they cant have it breaking down when in use. probably the same with police cars.

I’m not sure about police, but I’d stay the hell away from military. I used to be a storeman for the vehicle mechanics and it was one of the busiest jobs I’ve had, cause the drivers knew they weren’t responsible for the running costs and repairs, they just ragged the vehicles about! They were litteraly in the workshops on a weekly basis needing new replacements as something had invariably been busted.

I remember we left Plymouth to head to Scotland by the M5 and M6 and we hadn’t even made it off the A38 (Devon Expressway) before 3 of the 5 vehicles in my convoy broke down and I had to bust open the spares packs!

I know a few Police officers, and have asked them about this in the past. They all say you’d have to be nuts to ever buy one at auction.

I don’t know if people in this thread believe what they are writing, but they are way off. Police cars are maintained on the cheap. Corners are cut left, right and centre, because there simply isn’t the money available to do otherwise.

Agreed.

When it comes to the public services, we always get the kit from the person that says they can do the work for the least amount of money. I wouldn’t touch an ex public or armed service vehicle with your 10ft barge pole, let alone mine. But that’s just personal belief. I have no idea if the police follow the same maintenance routines as the military.

Not all are high milers. I looked at one which was used by a chief constable so was lower miles and not hammered. You just need to shop round. The engines will be remapped before you get your hands on one too!

Yep after researching it ...that does seem the case now but it wasn't always as they used to change the cars at around two years old...now it is a minimum of three and some are hung on to till 6 years old...so I had a change of tack and went for a one owner ex lease car that drives like a brand new on 26 grand new and seven and a half grand a little over 2 years old...19 grand depreciation in little over 2 year...I'm a happy man
