So watching frank skinners documentary about George Formby,and the story of Formbys trip to South Africa has just been told.
He and Beryl knew nothing about segregation, and it was 1946, 2 years before the imposition of apartheid. A young black girl came on stage to give them flowers, beryl picked her up, and gave her a kiss...they were immediately escorted from the theater ,put under armed guard and told to leave the country,
They refused, and instead took his tour to all black theaters across South Africa.

saw programme a few weeks ago but had to watch again,bought a george formby cd at christmas from tesco for myself.
seen his leaning on the lampost statue at douglas isle of man when over there on cycling trips.
