Let’s get it out there.

How much do you earn?!

I’ve changed industries and am now slumming it on circa £70k, for a 4 day week. Which is a comfortable living, but considerably less than I used to earn. I feel insecure about it...

Matey boy I met for a few ales earlier now bosses circa £200k in a middle office role at an investment bank. Lives in Putney, has a Russian wife (he’s a working class bloke from Somerset whose mum was a dinner lady, I have nothing but for respect for how he’s built it up himself up).

Ex girlfriend when I was dating her earned £150k + same again as a bonus. She is now early 30s, a front office director earning £200k basic, same again as a bonus...

In our late 20s/early 30s we used to net (as in take home) over £10k per month...

I guess I’ve experienced spending £10k+ on a holiday, being miserable on it, and the experience of your girlfriend telling you she’s spent £5k on a handbag... Well, great... Strange how we never have sex, though...

I left her in the end when I realised the money wasn’t worth it any longer and I caught her cheating on me...

I know I BS a lot on here but there isn’t one word of a lie in any of the above.

But, I guess my ultimate question is, do earnings matter, or should they? I stayed with her for years, if she’d earned minumum wage, I may not have done.

Thoughts of Fab? X

Nobody knows how much I earn let alone a bunch of strangers ... how odd

Reply privately (closed, thread got too big)

By (user no longer on site)  over a year ago

I earn more than some, and considerably less than others, I’m not publishing it here to a bunch of randomers but some would think I earn a good salary, whilst others would think it was too low for them to live on.

However, I feel fortunate to have a roof over my head and live a relatively comfortable life without having any immediate fears about being unable to put food on the table. So in that respect I’m blessed. Typical Middle Englander.

To answer your question earnings only matter if they impact your happiness. A large salary doesn’t necessarily buy you happiness but it can ease a lot of the worries that a low one incurs.

worked my ass off doing 2 or 3 jobs and 50-60 hours a week for 10 years in order to afford to live on my own. I earn enough to pay my bills and run my car with some beer tokens left over. I could have chosen an easier route that paid better money or a harder route that payed less. I sold out a bit on my ideals but Im also a realist. I also intend to explore my passions more but struggle to reconcile financial reality with wanting to do this.

does money matter? not really. Passion, class, and a desire for self improvement are what is key. If these are in place then you will be successful as you will measure success in things other than wealth.

And you will enjoy life more

Im rambling.

‘twas always going to be the case.

But to be fair don’t you think the “slumming it on £70k” and feeling “insecure” about it was always going to be a red rag to a bull to those that are genuinely struggling to make ends meet, you can’t honestly say you didn’t expect this reaction! It would be incredibly naive to say otherwise!

We earn enough to be comfortable but not enough to retire. We are happy, enjoy our life, have our health, yes we could always find something to spend more money on if we got it but at the end of day it gets dark and money isn't everything.

How much money someone makes is inconsequential. Money does not impress me, you cannot buy personality or class, that comes from within.

We are all born naked, our shit still stinks, and we are all destined for a wooden box at the end of it, regardless of social status, class or bank balance.

It's a very British thing to find discussing earnings or how much money you earn crass.

Personally I take it all with a huge gallic shrug.

I've had been successful and then made redundant. Having money doesn't make you a better person than anyone else, personally I think a touch of humility, respect and humanity does

No. I genuinely feel like I’m slunming it ok £70k. Especially on London. I know many people who earn far, far more.

Not meant to sound dickish. Just a fact.

It’s all relative. I suspect many posters on here have never earned professional type salaries. I ignore their inane, banal rantings, they’re like flies on a toilet seat to me.

Well let's say you were single and wanted to buy a house. Most mortgages would be 4.5x your income so you'd be looking at a £315k mortgage. With deposit that's a ~£350k house. These northern monkeys don't understand what £350k buys you in London because you can buy a row of houses in Sunderland for that.

"Let’s get it out there.

It’s all relative I guess.

A youth player yet to break through at Chelsea will probably earn that in few weeks and spends most of their time at home on their X-Box.

A soldier risking their life daily on the front line in Afghanistan will probably take 3 to 4 years to earn that.

It’s all industry dependent and is not (necessarily) an indicator of hard work as others have mentioned.

For me happiness is measured by a number of factors. I’d happily take a pay cut to be truly happy in my job. I wouldn’t accept a large pay rise to worsen my work / home life balance materially.

I earn enough, more important to me is that I am chased down by people who wish to give me their prized possessions to work on whether they be worth a few thousand or fifty thousand plus.

Worth a lot more than money that, but it also let's you charge more for your work

When you can walk out on a job with nothing in the bank & not care two fucks if you lose everything, then you are truly rich as you have stepped off the treadmill to walk your own path.

But, I guess my ultimate question is, do earnings matter, or should they? I stayed with her for years, if she’d earned minumum wage, I may not have done.

"Let’s get it out there.

I've read this post with interest and a giggle. Some jobs pay obscene money but that normally has consequences.

If you have health, a good brain and good family/friends, thats all that matters.

Richness is not pounds and pence

"I notice nobody else has declared the earnings...

What are you all afraid of?

"

I'm more than happy to declare my earnings/income because I'm proud of how I get it.

I'm full time, live in carer for my mum who has MS. The state very generously pays me carers allowance of £64.60 a week for "working" a minimum of 35 hours. People on the dole get £10 a week more than carers do.

I am allowed to work as well but government rules on carers allowance state I am not allowed to earn more than £120 a week.

I work 12 hours a week in a supermarket earning £9.20 an hour.

It's a difficult life having such a low income but I wouldn't consider doing things differently. My family is far more important to me than status and material possessions and will always be my first priority.

When you have very limited means you just adapt and learn to manage your money in different ways. Despite earning so little I have managed to save a little money, have a holiday to Iceland booked for the new year and can afford to run a car, even if it is an old banger

i wont say what I earn other than not enough for the job that I do

however, I was married to a man that earned a lot of money. when we met, he earned sod all, but hard work and years of loyalty to the company saw him earn really well. but the more he earned, the more arrogant he became. and my god could he brag about what he earned.

i left him, the house, the car, the lifestyle, because it's not me at all and loathe arrogance.

I'd rather be skint.

what someone earns is irrelevant. it's about the person. earn a fortune if you want, but be a nice person, not an arrogant knob

It was a painfully vulgar attempt at a humblebrag, I'd be astonished if you were not able to perceive that. Personal growth might be something you'll find more fulfilling to pursue as you mature.
