An airline has apologised after their boarding staff laughed at a kid with the name 'abcde'.
Apparently there are 328 pairs of american parents who are stupid enough to think that is an appropriate name for a child.
As ever, the entitled parent refused any personal responsibility. "She said: 'Mom, why is she laughing at my name?' And I said not everyone is nice and not everyone is going to be nice and it's unfortunate." No, what's unfortunate is that you have parents who expect the whole world to fit around you, rather than just go with a name that doesn't sound like a mobile phone password. |

So adults laugh openly at a child to the point the child picks up on being mocked by grown ups and thats ok because they have a weird name?
Ya its a stupid name, but the child didnt pick it. |

I'm pretty sure the mockery from her peers is well on its way. If the parents will sign the paperwork then the name can be changed at any time, then we might have hope for her. |

I agree it's shite of the adults to openly take the piss out of the poor kid.
The parents though... no words. |

"There is one I read about in Freakonomics - the name was pronounced Sh'teed, but spelt...
... Shithead!
How did that get into freakonomics?"
It was exploring the impact of names on society, including how variant spellings of the same name make a difference to earnings.
It's an excellent read. |

"Odd that if you walk down the same path you always end up at the same place.
Convention is such a controlling social behaviour.
Well for me."
Because there aren't many sensible paths to walk your child down |

Yeah I've read it, I just didn't remember that. I remember calculating how much a third world prostitute valued her life based on the price of bareback...
I think abcde would do well to stay out of rehab, let alone earn any money by holding down a job |

"Maybe we should have a baby name and then self choose at 16 or 18..
Ditch Bear, Peaches, Fifi Trixebelle in favour of traditional names like Herod and Damien.."
I'd call myself Octavian Maximus Cesar |

They may have just been thinking ahead .
In the years ahead more and more kids will be suffering with gender dysmorphia , so with a name like that she could be he , and vice versa , anytime she / he wanted to be , without changing their name .

"I hate the way people judge! I feel sorry for the kids, they don't get to choose their name :/
Don't hate or discriminate"
Yeah the whole world should change for them. The mother knew what she was doing when she named her kid, she's just an entitled fool using her kid as an accessory |

Maybe just give the kid a number until they are old enough to choose a name and change it then? |

Friend of mine knew another teacher who had taught Le-a (ledasha)
Another "Channel" (pronounced chanel!)
Another "Bandana"
We trade stories about the crazy names we come across
Some parents are shockers |

I think it;s a bit shit that adults could not temper their amusement, to ridicule a child to the point they are aware of it is really shitty behaviour.
The parents have set the kid up for a life of ridicule, they will spend their life clarifying their name, spelling it, agreeing that yes it is unusual, explaining that no it doesn't mean anything. And being laughed at.
But I think a flight attendant who takes a picture of a boarding pass and shares it on social media is incredibly cruel and should also be sacked for their lack of professionalism |

To be fair, the flight attendants first thought was probably "wow, this person has purchased 5 seats" |

Totally agree with this. Laughing with colleagues away from the public over the name is probably something we’d all do.
Publishing it on social media is a breach of privacy and totally out of order. |

A French court refused the name "nutella", New Zealand banned "anal" after someone attempted to name their kid that, they also stopped someone naming their kid "talula does the hula from hawaii" and "sex fruit". Norway jailed a mother who refused to pay the fine for using an unapproved name "gesher" which means bridge in Hebrew. A Turkish couple living in Germany were prevented from naming their kid "Osama bin Laden".
There is a kid in Mexico called "Robocop". |

"This is why someone governments practiced eugenics....
You do a fair bit of recruitment at some high end jobs, right? What would honestly cross your mind if abcde sent you her CV? "
I don’t do recruitment, I usually give the final interview....
But If she got to me.. I would think she is mentally tough to survive life with that name.... I would give her chance... |

To be fair, its stupidity is only really highlighted when you see its written form. If she said it then you'd just assume she was one of those white Americans that has to remind you they are 1/16 Irish, 1/32 polish and 1/1,024 native American. Because that's a thing apparently.
There's no way to slip "Robocop" in without thing getting weird. |

Interesting free speech and rights issues over what you can register for the child.

Yeah i don't really agree with Norway giving you a list of possible names, "gesher" sounds fine to me. But no a kid should not be called "sex fruit". |

"Old news who cares people pick all sorts of names just leave them to it.
They have the right to pick it and we have the right to mock them for it "
Mock the parents yes away from the child. But to laugh at the child no they didn’t ask for the name and have no control of it until they are of legal age to change it. That’s just cruel |

"Are you meant to try and pronounce it or just say the individual letters?
That's where it gets even worse, its pronounced ab-si-dee"
Of all the possible names in the world, you really have to wonder about some people. Poor kid. |
