When people say they are independent but can’t drive don’t have own property and no job am I right in saying they are not

I think technically if they are on benefits they're not but I interpret it as meaning someone who doesn't often ask for help or rely on others, they manage their own life and how they decide to live it.

People who drive depend on garages, roads and other people.

Home owners don't own their home until the mortgage is paid off.

People in work depend on their employer.

No you are not right. Many of the above people look after themselves, family etc without being dependant on others.

My father owns his own house, can't drive because he's now partially sighted and doesn't have a job because he's in his 90s. My mum is the same but never learned to drive. We have to give them a lot of help. However they are extremely independent to the point of stubbornness . Independence is a state of mind.

We are all dependent on some one, I’m dependent on my employer for the wage they pay me.

Other people may not work and will be dependent on benefits.

If he independent you mean financially, and by that earning and spending your own money

Yes, my dad is 88 and the same. Of course he is dependent on us for some things, but he does his own shopping, cooking and housework
