Hiding in the shadows

I dislike text speak, putting U instead of You, shortening words missing out vowels, changing letters, or writing in Chav speak.

But abbreviations like LOL don't bother me.

I think sometimes written words & comments can be taken in different ways so adding a laugh at the end shows it was meant it jest.

I wouldn't mind but there's no definitive usage or meaning for some of them, such as:

lol: laugh out loud

or

lol: lots of love

or

lol: large old lady

I use OMG, rarely wtf or btw.

I use lmao too. It’s just quicker.

I despise text speak though, such as “Wuu2, wbu, u ok, bby, bbe, sxc” and so on.

Different generations and all, there are probably plenty things us younger people do that annoy the older people & vice versa. Just the way it is!

There was a comment from an older woman on Facebook that went viral because she was giving her condolences to someone & put the emoji laughing faces, assuming they were crying faces lol!

I don't mind most of the acronyms but hate text speak like 'U' etcetera.

However, for me, it's daft swear words, like cockwomble or feck, that really grind my gears.

There and to the left a bit

Some I don't mind and use myself like BTW, WTF and others but textspeak like u, b4, l8r and others just grate.

The worst I heard though was someone actually say "obvs" out loud as part of a spoken conversation - I cringed inwardly at that one!!

I think sometimes people start saying some things like obvs, lol, YOLO ironically, as they are cringey, and then they start slipping into their vocabulary when it's not intended!

I use emojis too much, but I try to convey the context of my messages with them as just text can make it seem like you're either being cold or that you're being serious when you're actually just being funny or sarcastic.

No but they are elements of communication that are missed from the written word. If we were have a conversation face to gimpmask you might be able to see when I found something a bit amusing (lol), very amusing (pmsl) or fucking hilarious (lmfao).

With much of today's communication taking written or text form it's necessary to convey the unspoken elements.
