Got to be Hibiki, a very smooth Japanese whisky, recent winner of gold medals etc. Now available in tesco, around £35 for a 50ml bottle. Of course with our Japanese connections we get it a lot cheaper, after all a bottle of Teachers is only about £5 in Japan. Get all our alcohol these days from south of the border. |

I own a bit of land at Laphroaig on Islay. So my choice would have to be - a fine bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask... lovely smokey toffee... but without the smoke getting in your eyes or toffee pulling your fillings and crowns off.
Preferably sipped after a tray of smoked salmon, smoked trout, oatcakes and a salad at the Lochside Hotel in Bowmore. Teasing a large glass down as the sun sinks in the West out over Loch Indaal,,, |

Single malts
I don't like peaty whiskies
Dalwhinnie , glenkinchie, from Ireland bushmills single malt..
Don't discount blended whiskies..some folk get a bit snobbish over single malts over blends.
Blends my favourite is bushmills original. |

If it’s on Special you can just about get Johnnie Walker Blue Label for less than £100 - possibly one of the nicest bottles of scotch I’ve had the pleasure of tasting.
At £120 which is a little bit more than the £100 top price you can get a 1998 Lagavulin distillers edition which is also gorgeous. Vanilla on the nose with a smokey orange taste to it, even the aftertaste is lovely with a hint of marmalade. |

"So you have£50-100 squid to spend what do you buy?
Obviously it's not going to be in the same league as a 2.5k bottle.
Recommendations please.
" Middleton Irish Whiskey, if you are not in the duty free shop you might need £150 |

Depends on your taste profile,.. Johnny Walker blue is a gorgeous blended whiskey.
Don't know about American only ones I've tried and liked woodforde reserve and bulleit bourbon. |

"Talisker 10 years, should only be around £30 but beats the more expensive ones in my opinion.
As its an island malt it has a pepper taste to it."
I love Talisker. Talisker storm isn't bad either. |

Asian whiskies are doing quite well now and can out-do most ‘popular’ scotch malts!
Try Kavalan single malt (it’s my favourite), but expect to pay around 60 to 200 a bottle... |

I like storm and Skye but the original just beats them for me.

Another vote for talisker. Get the most aged one you can afford and give someone’s mouth a party |

Like wine or champagne just because it's ridiculously expensive doesn't make it better.
Anyway, Highland Park or Laphroaig are excellent choices but Lidl Speyside single malt is less than £20, very peaty and hardly distinguishable from more expensive named brands. |

"Not a big whiskey drinker but when I do prefer Irish..

"Suntory Hakushu is worth a look for you dont like peat and smoke.
Some bourbons are a great alternative too (try Blantons Gold)"
For the bourbon drinkers Lidl's Western old is surprisingly good for £13....don't be tempted by the 6 year old reserve though, its disgusting.

When I was a dumb 15 year old teenager at Christmas. I took a gulp of my fathers bell's whisky, immediately after I thought. Yuck what this shit. So I spat it out on the coal fire. Whoosh later my mum say's ''how did you singe your eye lashes eyebrows and hair'' um um um um I don't know. |

Ardbeg 10 is my standard, really like Talisker and Lagavulin
Everyday whisky is a Highland Park 12 or 18
I have been a member of the Malt Whisky Society in Leith for a while and love tasting notes they produce.
Have a few cask strength specials and limited editions. I drink them neat with no ice as that just kills the flavour. Cask strength I open up with a drop of water.
I agree wholeheartedly about the Japanese Whisky there are some excellent examples, I like the Yamazaki (suntory) particularly
The great thing is there are so many you can try a new one every day.
Anyone else buy the Whisky Bible by Jim Murray? |

I would personally say yes it does, we all have our own taste , just like here, and certainly many of the industry magazines and books say very good things about it.
That said, it wouldn’t be my first choice. |
