We have a Canon EOS 1000D, which when we bought it was the cheapest of the EOS range. Probably like you we wanted something that was a bit better than your normal compact but was still easy to handle.
The thing that sold it to us over the comparable Sony or Nikon is that it felt quite natural in the hand with the shoot button in the perfect place. The other two felt a little awkward.
It's very easy to use in point and shoot mode with lots of control if you want to be more artistic.
It takes great photos in all types of light and conditions and lots of second hand spares like lenses etc. available on Ebay. |

Pretty much any D-SLR will give you better images than a point and shoot but only if you know what you're doing.
If you don't intend to use it in anything but manual mode you'd be better off with a high-end P&S such as the Canon G12 (which is basically a D-SLR without exchangeable lenses) or a decent bridge camera (can't recommend any of those as I haven't used one in years !)
If you do decide to go down the D-SLR route, then it's usually a straight choice between Nikon or Canon.
I use Canon and am forever 'fighting' with Nikon users but basically there's a hairs breadth between the two at any price point.
Then you'll need - Speedlites, spare batteries, a battery grip, lenses, lights, backdrops, modifiers, bags, wind machines, reflectors... |

I got Siren a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ18 which takes unbelievably crisp photos. You have to invest a little time in getting to know how to get the best out of it but for it's price (£200), it really is a great camera. |

We have an Olympus E-500 , and have had no problems with it, plus the auto function is pretty good (almost fool proof...and we are fools lol), until you get used to the camera, and have the confidence to select your on settings. |

If you already have lenses then your choice could / should be guided by them, I had Nikon film camera and lenses so now have Nikon D200 and D50 as it uses the same lens mount and I can still use them.
If you are starting from scratch then consider the new 4-thirds format e.g. the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GX1 or Olympus Pen E-PL1.
CCD and software are also important but the real key is the lens, so my personal choice if starting over would be the Lumix.
Bigest problem with all digital camera's..... it's very cheap and easy to take 1000 picture instead of one good one, if you had to consider the cost of printing the old film style then it made you think more about what you are photographing, look to the corners of the view-finder make sure the whole picture is right before pressing the button...
let me know which you choose |

"thanks all quite informative and usefull, used to use the old slr film type. then moved to a digital point n shoot so would like a better one now, so still looking , "
If you used film and knew your f-stops from your iso's, you'll be OK with a D-SLR !! |

I have a Nikon and now I know a little more about its functions its ok and I like it.
I do like the Canons though, if I was starting from scratch then I'd buy a Canon but I have various lenses for the Nikon which weren't cheap so ill continue with this.
Think the prices for both are very similar and the cheapest would be in the region of £300 and obviously go up in price to whatever you want to spend. |

Far better with someone like Hilton Photo, where they know what they're talking about and sell you what you actually need (even over the phone, so you don't need to make the trip to Hull !)

True...half our profile pics were taken with my phone, the other half with about £5k worth of SLR and I imagine most folks will prefer the phone pics ! |

i have owned a canon eos 300d for seven years now still works perfectly takes great pics in all modes with a few assorted zooms and wide angle lenses a speedlite flash amidst the rest of the stuff in the bag.
i now need to replace the batteries as they are not holding the charge as well as they used to but small price to pay after seven years service.
whilst canons have been updated beyond belief (i would love a new one its my birthday in a couple of weeks...) the 300 serves us well but theres little to choose between canon and nikon...however if i was to replace old faithful i would go with another canon as i could still use all of the kit i have accumulated over the years. |

"thanks just for cracking off to order 3 as we type "
No probs, they work as well, if not better than the originals...use the 7dayshop ones in my 5DMkII, 50D and 450D, never had a problem with them. |

"Been having a look round myself, and going off reports and reviews, think I'll be aiming for a Canon 550D."
£476.90 at Dixons (online) is the cheapest at the minute, plus another £40 cashback on top of that, so only £436.90 (just download the form and send it off to Canon with a copy of the receipt )

thanks for the link just saved myself £50 on a Canon Extender EF 2x III
Canon all the way for me, thats mostly because I have 2 canon film cameras so, the lenses (which to be fair are a better investment than cameras) fit, so I now own four canon cameras, its more adictive than shoes and handbags, though I have a few of those as well.

Does it have to be a DSLR? They are excellent and have huge capability but you might be better with a Canon G12 or similar - still a great camera, cheaper and less fiddly! |

"Thanks for that.
Found one with a 18-135mm lens for £499, 18-55mm lens not reviewed well.
Think that's a good deal !"
Yeah, good deal
The 18-55 isn't that bad a lens if you were only previously used to a point and shot but the 18,135 will be way more versatile ! |
