I have just read an article where it says that a vegan lifestyle is as much about animal welfare as what they eat. It said some vegans do not eat almonds, avocado or honey if mobile bee hives have been used as it is not good for the bees. Are all vegetables equal ? |

"Why don't they eat almonds and avocados ?"
I believe it is something to do with honey bees being moved withoutbtheir consent. Because given a choice honey bees will not pollinate avocados or almonds. So they are forced to, and thatvis against the vegan principles. |

It says that the bees are fed high fructose corn syrup and mainly in California. The harvest is so big that they bring in these hives to supplement local bees.. the article is in the guardian online but you need to use the search facility |

"How were almonds and avocados pollinated before mobile bee hives were invented ?"
Who knows. People move bee hives around a lot. Some people take them up on the moors when the heather's out because they can sell their honey more easily. |

"Why don't they eat almonds and avocados ?
I think its because mobile bee hives have been used to pollinate them and that method of keeping bees isn't good for bees."
I was offered a free trial to become a bee keeper once; I had to stop as they gave me hives |

I remember on a more thinking website someone asking if it's ethical to use animals in farming to help make crops if you're against animal welfare. Like asking could you even ea cereal if animals had helped make it. I didn't know the answer.
Not everyone is vegan because of animal welfare btw. |

To be fair, pretty much everything we eat has been cultured and modified in some way. Very little is totally natural. Varieties of fruit and vegetables have pretty much all been created through selective cross pollination and other types of genetic modifications.
On the other hand, as long as folk don't criticize what I eat, then I'm happy for them to live their lives according to whatever ethos they choose.
