I don’t mind the highlights on MOTD but I struggle to watch a whole match. It’s a bit dull.

Whereas I find rugby entertaining through the whole game.

"Millionaire mercenaries playing for billionaire foreign owners. "

That’s a bit of lazy generalisation innit, Tame?

At the very top of the game the yes, that’s might be the case. But that only represents less than 1% of the people who play and enjoy it, and is definitely not the case for the 99%+ of people involved in the sport from grassroots level upwards!

Dan, for me it’s not really about soft vs hard etc.

I just prefer rugby as a game to watch and also having been around both local rugby and football clubs, I just prefer the rugby culture. I hate to say it but it’s just less yobbish.

I actually like both sports, been to many ‘live’ games of both (well Rugby Union being a Southerner anyway, not done a live Rugby League game) so can appreciate them both, but football will always be the much more engaging for me.

It’s the Rugby (Union) World Cup soon. Let’s see if the country comes to a standstill when that’s on like with the football one (actually, in Wales it probably will, as Rugby is like a religion) but elsewhere it’ll just be ‘meh’.

My interest in football reduces every year. I still go and see my team but that’s now as much of a social thing as anything, a chance to catch up with mates etc.

The sport that keeps me interested and I really love to watch and play is cricket.

The premiershit is for money making and armchair fans.

It's bad enough having to do a 500 mile round trip on a Saturday when your an away fan but on a Monday or Friday needing to take two days off work is a piss take etc.

Against modern football.

The top musicians get millions and I think most of them are awful

What about bankers , politicians CEO’s

They all get ludicrous pay packets .

Would you turn it down if you were offered it.

They aren’t all bad , overpaid foreigners.

Look at what Juan Mata does

He’s a humble guy set up a charity .

There are plenty of decent players who give back to community and are thankful

I love football and it’s by far the best sport in my opinion .

Would you turn it down if you were offered it.

They aren’t all bad , overpaid foreigners.

Look at what Juan Mata does

There are plenty of decent players who give back to community and are thankful

Unfortunately Rugby fans will just have to accept that their sport takes a backseat to Football.

I wouldn’t say I hate rugby, I can maybe watch 15 minutes or so of a game before I get a bit fed up, however I do appreciate the physicality of the sport and the conditioning that is required to play.

I don't begrudge any sportsman earning as much as they can over the period they can because their lifespan to do it is a lot shorter.........

they can only earn what they can because sponsors and people are prepared to pay them......

"Well.... it just is! "

A few years ago I would have agreed with you on this.

However.

Just under a year ago, I stood on the side of the pitch at my father's memorial game at his local club and watched my brother play, in his honour.

My 5 year old plays it with the other kids that live nearby and in this act, it cuts across race, sex and cultural divides from this level, right up to world cup level.

I think that the money involved at the top of the game is obscene, but it's similar to the top of a pyramid, there's an awful lot below that level that is really really good x

That's right. People reply wether they enjoy the subject or not.

That's not 'winding people up'. The flip side of this is people don't reply, no one gets wound up (again) and the thread dies. Some people do reply but the thread do sent last long.

Eventually you find a subject that engages people. You might have to do a few but you get there in the end.

You know exactly what I mean don't you?

So yeah, as mentioned due to its huge success and popularity football is far from Shite.

You don't like football. Totally fine and acceptable.

Football and it's fans don't mind this at all, they don't need you to like it. It's growing without you.

It’s the Rugby (Union) World Cup soon. Let’s see if the country comes to a standstill when that’s on like with the football one (actually, in Wales it probably will, as Rugby is like a religion) but elsewhere it’ll just be ‘meh’. "

The ironic part of this situation is the whole country comes to a standstill for a sport we're shit at and have no chance of winning, whereas it's 'meh' when it comes to a sport we're actually half-decent at and stand more than an outside chance of actually winning

No guessing needed, the Pro14 is where the money is at,hence why most top players go to France for a couple of years, coin it in on their astronomical wages, then bugger off back to their home nation when the run-up to the RWC begins

People who don't like football, for some reason love telling football fans this.

Football fans who don't enjoy rugby don't tend to say anything to rugby fans.

I'm only on about here and I know many of us like both.

Is this because people who only like rugby are jealous of what football has? I can't work it out.

Football is not at all in envy of what rugby has and from what I can see it's fans are quite happy for Rugby to achieve every success it aims for.

Why do these threads always turn i to football vs rugby ?

Surely, there is space for both ?

Like them or loathe them, they are part of our culture

I don't enjoy sport and listening to those that do can be boring as hell

Then again, me parroting on about some of the things I enjoy is probably mind numbing for others too

Find space for others

It adds rather than detracts

Yeah take the padding away! Due to the nature of the sport and head clashing it would cause life changing injuries and maybe death...but wouldn't be called tarts anymore.

And I urge you to go to a game at Wembley...it's an absolute event, always something happening - the 4hrs fly by!

Take the padding away and they have to learn to tackle properly. Both forms of rugby are far tougher and padding is not required.

In fairness my kids play a form of American football, but they call it Piggie In The Middle. Chuck a ball over someone's head for someone else to catch then do nothing for 15 minutes

Why wouldn't you take your grandson to a football match ?

Please don't say crowd trouble as you can avoid that and it's totally different to what it was a few decades ago.

Yes there's trouble at certain games but they're not interested in you and your grandson.

"People that generally played rugby at school were just the fat kids that couldn't play football."

We were forced to play rugby, football was banned, detested the game ever since. Boring and the social behaviour of rugby players on tour is WAY worse than football players.

"Well.... it just is! "

Its not even that good.

I do like to wind up the macho knuckle dragging fanatic types at work by asking them if they enjoyed getting excited watching other men running round and getting sweaty in skimpy outfits

My best one was when I worked in pubs in London. I always supported the minority side. Well it was just me.. they knew I was fucking around but it was funny. I don't work in pubs now but I do like to shout in when I walk past. Whoever is playing against man u or liverpoool normally

"Ruined by money and the wholesale cheating by the players on the pitch.

I think the millions of amateur players and junior footballers around the world who play for the love of the game would disagree.

Later on today I'll be coaching juniors and in total there will over 100 kids of all ages from 5yo upwards, no money no cheating just lots of smiles and laughter.

Please don't tar the whole game with the same brush"

Must admit that I made the assumption OP was referring to the professional game and specifically the premiership, no offense meant.

"As a ex rugby player, I still watch would love to play still, I do watch football as well difference

Would take my grandson to rugby, but never to a football match. "

Can you explain why? I support a lower leagues team and LOADS of kids go and have a great time, there are family stands, kids zones etc.

The days of mass riots are long gone and even if there is any disorder (which can also happen anywhere!) you and your grandson won’t be targeted. It’s chav on chav!

I used to think like that, having only recently started taking my son to football now he's as tall as i am. However, i now realise that id been a dick, and i had nothing to worry about. "

I took my daughter to her first match aged 4. No chew whatsoever and despite it being nippy she loved it.

Though I did bring her a hot water bottle just in case ha!

Yeah it's gotten rubbish to watch on TV.

Its what happens when you pick players based on how much money they can make you and not how good they are.

When we were at school the only people who played rugby were the ones that were shit at football !! As for it being pansies who play football, if you look in to it there are far more serious injuries than there are in rugby. When was the last time you saw anyone being carried off with a broken leg at a rugby match ?

Rugby player would play on with a broken leg, no need to be carried off for such a small injury.
