I am glad that the use of the cane or strap is not used in schools now. At my school the use of the cane was a regular occurrence cant really say if it deterred anybody. What punishment was given out at your school?

Jnr school was a Catholic school, run by nuns. It was a regular occurrence for all the classes to be lined up in the playground and names called out (always boys). They (we) would then have to pull our trousers down, bend over and receive ‘6 of the best’ with the cane

Chalk and then board rubber thrown at my head.

Got caught 'necking' a girl on my first day in a new comp. Head teacher threatened me with repeating it with the girl on the main stage in assembly. I said okay as I wasn't sure what to say but thank fully he bottled it and I got away with 'necking' a girl

Well I’m not sure it was any LESS effective than the current ‘no, Jocasta, no. You mustn’t do that’ punishments that teachers give out today.

Many a blackboard (for that was what they were called in those days, way before they became ‘chalk boards’, nostalgia fans) rubber whizzed past my ear as a kiddie and the fear of punishment was enough to make me behave!

I was always *such* a good boy anyway!!

There and to the left a bit

I went to a private school from the age of 4-7 where a slipper across the back of the legs was a permissible punishment for any teacher to hand out - was also made to spend the day with a sign round my neck that read "Watch me I bite" after I bit another kid. In fairness I never did it again.

When I moved to a state Junior school I don't remember any particular punishments being meted out apart from a telling off.

Secondary school, well aimed board rubbers and chalk were the norm - and we had one particularly sadistic chemistry teacher who revelled in choking you with your tie, and on one occasion made a kid carry a pan of burning sulphur round the classroom - but canings were reserved for the headmaster only and very rarely happened.

" Catholic myself we did not have our trousers down though. That is humiliating."

Trousers down was just one of the nuns standard punishments. The school had separate playgrounds for boys & girls, if you went in the girls playground (say to retrieve the football) you’d be called out, caned and then made to wear a bow in your hair for the whole of the next school day.

All boys boarding school for me:

Caned regularly,

Wooden blackboard dusters and cricket balls thrown at the heads of those not concentrating in class

knotted rope was the PE teachers favourite incentive for us to run faster.

But the best of all was a particularly eccentric teacher that used to spray us with her perfume if we misbehaved

But it must have worked becuase old people are so lovely compared to brats these days.

Simple fact is, a spank will work for some people and not others. Calling someone a name will stop some and not others. Just talking to the kid will stop some and not others.

I think they should use them all, but be mindful of what does and doesnt work.

But what exactly is the punishment these days? I think its "make the test easier for them because they are misbehaving"?

Corporal punishment was no longer allowed (just) when I was at school.

So we got other physical punishments, often centred around the pressup.

It taught me nothing really.

I can still do 20 press ups though.

Its usually some form of isolation. All schools have a behaviour policy, usually it's on their website.

"One of my teachers punched an 11 y.o. boy in the bollocks so hard that he had to go to hospital."

I've seen the exact inverse of this happen too -we had one nutter in one of my classes who when picked on by a teacher, grabbed hold of his tie and yanked it so hard that he broke the teachers nose on the desk -then proceeded to jump on the teacher and start literally beating the crap out of him -it took 3 teachers to pull him off. The rest of the class was so stunned we literally didn't know what to do. thing is though that he was the nicest most meekest and mildest guy until you messed with him and his red mist set in (fucking scary really). he got expelled about a year later and the last time I saw him was in a pub beating the crap out of 6 guys twice the size of him -I do so hope he eventually managed to control his anger or he most certainly will be in prison by now.

When I was 15 I got the cane for the final time , and never went back . There was a massive building site not far from school and they were always looking for labourers . I had a couple of older mates who sorted it for me , cash in hand and I only went back almost a year later to do a few o levels .

Recently my Dad gave me a box full of school memorabilia , and inside were a dozen or more letters from the school and truancy officers with copies of my Dads responses . I never realised how much trouble it had caused , and I was earning good money instead of going . At the time my old man never even mentioned the correspondence . I asked him why , and he said he knew I hadn’t been happy , and whatever I did he would support me . So he let me get on with it .

We did too but I soon figured that it was far easier to bunk detention and rather get caned for that as the caning took 5 minutes and stung for a bit whereas the detention cost an afternoon of my life

I was caned almost every other day -it had zero effect on whether I did or didn't do something and I would often choose it over other punishments too -see my post about detention above.

The belt, or tawse.

A leather strap, split into two at one end, and lashed over your outstretched hands.

Seven times in one year I received it at primary school.

I was at school in the 70s, very early 80s, and was never aware of corporal punishment being used literally - though the threat of the headmaster's cane was always there and regularly made to the 'naughtiest' kids. Most of the time it was lines or standing in the corner for the duration of that lesson (middle school), and detentions, litter picking and chalk throwing (high school). However if you fell foul of the PE teachers their favourite punishment was to have you run round the field pointlessly in your break, while a particular French teacher would craftily offer the choice of a detention or washing his old 2CV during lunch. Which everyone involved seemed happy with until a particularly naughty kid defiantly 'washed' it (i.e. chucked a couple of buckets of water at it) having rolled back the sunroof first. The French teacher turning red with apoplectic rage went down in school legend. Mind you, I remember several teachers completely losing it and screaming, shouting and rather nasty name calling on a regular basis, in a way that probably wouldn't be allowed today.

by the way, just for those forumites who were schooled after corporal punishment was outlawed, in our school caning was the sole preserve of the headmaster. i suspect this was the norm in most schools

If you're caned often enough, you get to a point that it doesn't actually hurt that much anymore anyway -so you end up getting yourself into even more trouble for pulling funny faces while said cane operator is bursting a blood vessel trying to teach you a lesson with a questionable method

my head master was always far more twisted than that -he had a rack of about 10 canes from which we had to choose -then we had to drop our trousers and touch our toes -i kid you not -today he would probably be beheaded by some of the forum posters on here for even suggesting we drop our trousers.

ours had a glass wall cabinet with about 10 canes in ... he would get some kids to linseed oil them before being caned. he would always do the psychological stuff like take one out of the case... flex it ... shake his head .... put it back and try another .... maybe swish it through the air a few times .... and so on ....

he would always say the same speech to everyone ... 'so-and-so' (insert pupils name), you're a decent boy, but i'm affraid i'm going to have to cane you etc etc.

Where I grew up there was no qualms about whacking and errant child. Problems arise when teachers just whacked you anyway.

Because where I lived was very hot there used to be lines of water fountains in the playground. If you were drinking out of one and a certain teacher walked past he would whack you like a perveted game of whack a mole. I think he wanted to do five in a row or summat but the first muffled Yelp along the line you would be running for it.

Made me the well balanced chap I am.

Ok

I've had a R.E teacher throw a table at me.

Been locked in a storage room for 2 hrs, but that's where they kept the confiscated alcohol so I got pissed.

Lost count the amount of lines I had to do.

Punishment never bothered me, only 1 did.... in jnr school when I had to hold a penny against a wall with my nose! Used blutac once but that's something you can only do once. I wasn't a naughty kid just didn't do what I was told. Followed me into adulthood. That's why I'm going off the grid. No rules or routine.

Fuckinel I just got a shudder reading that and thinking back. My old pe teacher Mr Spencer God can't believe I remember the cunts name but then again how could I forget. God knows where he got it but he had a pair of pumps that must have been at least a size 20 and fuck did he use it. I remember 1s lining up to go in his class. Think he was late so obviously we was all messing about as kids do then somebody spotted him so we all shit it and jumped in line. As he walked up I asked what we was doing. Think he said cross country or something like that and me being me I tutted. I didn't even see it coming and wollop he slapped me. I think he was going for my face but hit my last ear. All I remember was a huge stinging in my ear and I couldn't hear out of it. Then told to shut up and get inside. As I was changing I remember feeling something running down my face and I realised it was blood coming out my ear. He'd burst my ear drum. I remember trying to tell him but just got threaten with the same again if I didn't shut up. Can you imagine a teacher doing that to a kid now but having said that every school day was a day in hell for me so much so if I told you half of what went on you'd never believe it. If it still went on today most of them would be doing time for child abuse and rightly so.

Loved English, but struggled with the connecting words, and spelling.

Was always being made to stand in front of the Headteacher while he shouted at me, usually resulting in ripping up my work.

One time he was screaming at me, then started punching my arm hard repeatedly, ended up covered in bruises, evident knuckle marks.

My Dad, who was a single Dad worried about others judging his parental fitness saw and went ballistic!

Never saw my Dad so angry.

He grabbed the headmaster around the throat up against the wall and dared him to ever lay a finger on me again, citing that he never laid a finger on me, no one else ever had the right too. The School was up for closure, Dad had 3 kids in a School of 30.

Next day the governers were at our door, begging my Dad to not pull us out of School, as that would certainly be the nail in it's coffin, Dad reluctantly agreed on the promise I was never harmed again.

The guy never laid a finger on me after that, developed a stutter whenever he addressed me lol.

You've no idea how familiar that is. I also had dislexia but mine was saviour. When I left school I could barely spell my own name. Every single day I was told in detail just how stupid I was and I'd never be anything of any worth. Well I proved that 1 wrong. I even had the pleasure of explaining to 1 of the worst culprit just how much more I earned compared to a poxy teacher but that's anther story. Years later my own son's started school and come home with a prominent hand print of bruises on his shoulder he was trying to hide. When it was noticed he explained he'd wanted to sit with his mate at dinner time but wasn't allowed becouse he was on pat lunches his mate wasn't so he sneaked in but got court by the headmaster. The hand print was the headmaster ejecting him. The next day I paid this head master a unexpected visit. He left the school with stress the same day never to return. You can imagine how guilty I feel..... not.

How dos that saying go those that can do those that can't teach. How true....

Jeez! Your poor son! No one has the right ever to do that!

I struggled all through school, managed to get GCSE's

Not diagnosed until I became an NVQ assessor and my boss who taught dyslexic students in a former life picked up and had me assessed.

I'd already gained two degrees at this point, so knew I wasn't stupid. And typing on a computer is fine, the backlight helps the words stand out, it's when I handwrite things.

Hope your son is ok now, and much happier, so glad we have safeguarding in Schools now, punishment yes, abuse no.

Yes he's fine in fact it was quite some time ago he's now 30 with a son of his own.

My own dislexia wasn't diagnosed at all in fact back then (I'm an old git) it wasn't even heard of. I left school with nothing except horrific memorys. I actually believed I was stupid when I left school. Hearing it in every single class kinda stuck and well I must be stupid everyone else could do it so I must be. It was only when I left school and my pashon for cars took over I realised actually if I can strip and rebuild engines without so much as a manual how can I be so thick they can't do it but to me it made perfect sence. It was then I went to night school for 8 long years and managed to get my spelling where it is now. Far from perfect but easily understandable and with much less effort as it takes me to write it so I'm happy enough with it. Years later I've a full time job I've held for over 20 years with the biggest worldwide brewing company there is as well as run 2 very successful businesses of my own. Now looking back it was my dislexia made it all possible it gave me the determination I needed not to mention made me the man I am today. So yes as bad as it all was and fuck me it was bad I'd change nothing. Everything has a reason least that's my thinking.

"The strap. Being punched in the stomach and kidneys simultaneously. Knuckles on the top of the head. Being lifted off the ground holding only the sideburns. To name just a few."

You know people do that for fun now you know.
