I’ve just stared making massive changes to my diet to get my weight, mood and psoriasis under control. I’m reducing carbs (any still in are whole meal pasta, brown rice etc) reducing dairy and cutting as much sugar out as possible. Anyone else done this and got any advice or tips. Also any recipes would be great as I’m struggling for ideas.xx

Dont make massive changes if possible, try to change it slowly bit by bit so that you dont crash and get fed up.

In relation to ideas and reciepes google is your friend

I try to low carb though I do eat dairy. Look at the diet doctor website for loads of low carb recipes, I still use some of the Atkins ones too.

This time of year I'm using my slow cooker so it's stews and casseroles fresh veg meat and stock and it's cooked when I'm home from work ..

Stock up on herbs and spices and stock cubes. You can make the same meat and accompaniment taste totally different with different spices and stocks.

Tonight we are having prawn soup with either an oyster and ginger base or another one I forgot the name of. I've made it with sweet chilli and also Chinese 5 spice and soy sauce. You can add rice noodles for the carbs or whole wheat noodles.

I make different pasta sauces with a tomato base or veg and stock.

Experiment with spices, herbs, veg and sauces. You soon learn what tastes good together, and you can throw a meal together in half an hour, without thinking about it.

I have a cupboard stocked with whole wheat pasta, brown rice, quinoa, bulgur wheat etc, and tinned tomatoes, passata, sweet corn, lentils, barley and dried peas too.

Roast some peppers, onions and tomatoes in the oven with some balsamic over them

Boil some wholewheat pasta up and mix the two. It tastes fab.

No sauce needed as the juice from the toms and the balsamic add the moisture

---

Shredded cabbage & leek with sliced bacon medallions and two soft poached eggs on top

---

Linda McCartney rosemary & red onion sausages are great (and filling) with beans & mushrooms

---

If you need a sweet fix, try fresh berries with Kvarg vanilla yoghurt (4 for £3 at Asda)

---

Home made soups are lovely too if you make them thick. I've got 2 batches in the freezer. One pea & ham, one butternut squash

If you make them thick, you don't miss the bread too much

---

Above all else, eat food you enjoy

If you don't enjoy it, you will fall back into old ways

Whatever you do, don't go to an extreme. You won't be able to maintain it. Don't completely eliminate treats, just cut down.

There are a lot of apps out there that help with calorie counting, healthy eating, balancing diets etc. Find one that works for what you're trying to achieve. It can be a good support for the first few weeks and helps get you used to a different way of eating.

Wishing you all the best

Some great advice, thanks everyone.

I’m not going totally cold turkey and am filling up on plenty of lower carb veggies to keep me feeling full. I am a bit of a cake monster and could happily live on chocolate biscuits and chips most weeks. I enjoy cooking but am always a bit stuck for ideas of what to make. I’ve found some good recipes online and read in a few places that if you are trying to cut out sugar then coconut is naturally very low in sugar but seems to curb the craving for something sweet.xx

I made a big difference by not changing the foods much, just the quantities.

I then used an app to see which food groups were too high and too low.

Have been through a big change of diet and it can be hard going until your taste buds adapt. These are my tips

Overall have a balanced diet. For each plate full aim for 1/2 plate greens, 1/4 carbs (which all have to be 100% wholegrain) and 1/4 protein.

Snacks. Convert to natural snacks so fruit, seeds, nuts, etc. But be conscious of portion size as almonds for example can be very calorific.

Water. Make sure you are drinking enough. Cut out all sugary drinks and replace with water.

Portion size. We tend to have portions that are far to big. Takes time to get used to this.

Food diary. Everything I eat or drink gets recorded on my phone. Just a one line description is enough detail for me (poached eggs x 2, tomato x 1, etc). Can be very revealing after a while.

Ingredients. Try to make as much of your own food as possible or buy from artisan producers. For example I buy wholewheat bread from a local baker. Ingredients are 100% wholewheat, pinch sea salt, yeast. Compare that to a loaf from the supermarket. What you are eating is therefore better quality.

Good luck with what you are trying to do, it is really worth the change.

You could try carb cycling, eat more on training days and lower on rest days, it doesnt make you feel you are dieting.

DON’T diet

Just change what and the way you eat. Try to avoid as much processed food as possible and use fresh. If you want frozen veg use fresh and freeze it yourself. Many YouTube videos on freezing veg.

Recommended book- The GI diet.

Very educational. Simple and easy to use.

I’m not actively dieting, more just trying to improve my diet. I was recommended to read the blood sugar solution by a health and fitness coach as I am so addicted to anything sugary and it can be a major aggravating factor with skin problems. I’m not actively looking to loose weight more just to stop it yo yoing and feel healthier and happier. Thanks for everyone’s advice. I’ll try and keep this updated on my progress and any good tips I pick up along the way. So far I have been very very short tempered and irritable and felt a bit shaky but am still going strong.xx

Excercuse is a must.

Diet, a general measure of the amount of food to consume is.

A fist amount of fruits(ideally 30 mins before your official meal)

A fist amount of veggies

A fist amount of protein(meat)

Lastly if you’re still hungry, a fist amount of carbs.

If you eat in sequence listed above, you shall feel a difference within a week

I'm on the paleo or keto diet which is basically no carbs or heavily reduced and definitely no sugar but full fat diary is in. If memory serves Diet Doctor web site, think that's being posted already, or just Google paleo/keto diet if you get the web site I used it's got hundreds of fantastic recipes.

Only one proviso though, the diet is about only eating when you are hungry and only to fulfilment, the diet I found after a week or so makes you almost fill full all the time so it can feel strange not eating at a "normal meal time".

Hope this helps as I lost 5 stone.

I did paleo for 2 years and then when I moved to London I slipped back into bad habits from being newly single and dating again. I need to get back into the routine and start again. It’s hard work but I liked the good I ate. I lost weight easily and felt much better.

That's all well and good but if you eat 3 bars of chocolate a day you'll need a shit load of exercise to burn those bad boy calories.

Exercise isn’t the issue, I have a very physical job and am already quite active outside of work. My problem isn’t that I need to lose a lot of weight or diet, my weight is always up and down though because I go through phases of eating to much sugary rubbish so am trying to get myself in the habit of eating a healthier diet. Thanks for all the advice.xx

I follow slimming world, i eat everything and have lost a few Stone. Im allowed choc, crisps and loads of junk food but its a small amount daily whilst piling up on meat veg salads rice pasta to name a few.

Crash diets dont work. And the body will crave things. Plus it could make you feel low as your denying yourself food luxuries.

The body needs fats sugars carbs proteins.

I dont feel like im on a diet at all xx

My works doctor told me that exercise isn't the issue with dieting it's diet, diet, diet. He maintained that exercise is counter productive for most people because you go to the gym for a couple of hours then think that means they can have a take-a-way, bag of chips or pints of lager.

Once during physiotherapy after half an hour of heavy exercise cycling I asked if that meant I could have a mars bar, the therapist checked the readouts and said it meant I could have an apple!

When I checked I was really surprised about how many calories you only burn doing various activities, a lot lower than I thought before I checked.

260 calories loss for 30 mins of playing football while peanut lion bars are about 500 calories intake per 100g.

I am sorry that is incorrect, the body does not need to EAT sugars or high carb foods at all. The NHS is potentially facing being bankrupted by the number of people developing Type II Diabetes which can in most cases be prevented, reversed or controlled ENTIRELY by cutting sugars and ready carbs from the diet.

You may lose weight on your current diet, but you could become more and more insulin resistant and end up with diabetes. People who are already insulin resistant MUST reduce carbs or risk life threatening complications.

I recently lost two stone by 1) opting for vegetables or protein over carbs (but still eating some carbs) 2) exercising more regularly 3) fasting.

The latter isn't for everyone, but for me it really worked and also helped me be strict and attentive to what I eat.

Basically you need to elect a 16 hour period where you don't eat. For me, that means skipping breakfast (which usually amounted to crap cereal anyway), the first food being lunch at noon; last time I eat is strictly 8pm. So, an 8 hour window of eating, with 16 hours not (inc sleeping - it's easiest not eating when you're asleep!)

Once noon comes I'm usually ravenous, but I find there's only so much that I can actually eat until I'm full. This 8pm curfew also stops me having drinks in the evening which are very calorific.

I found it very hard to do at first, but the noticeable results were so quick that I wanted to continue and it made me conscious of exactly what I was eating when meal time comes. And it's not as monk-like as it sounds - I eat/drink whatever I like at the weekend. But now I find I'm more conscientious at the weekend too - I don't want to undo the good work I've done in the week.

Good luck!

Kx

A tip I found useful was:

When you fancy cooking something, google the recipe but add SW or Syn free in front of the recipe name. 99% of the time there’s a dieting recipe version of what your wanting to cook

Over what sort of time scale does your weight fluctuate?

If it's relatively short then it's unlikely that it's your diet causing it.

Usually over a couple of months. I’ll have a few months of eating ok(ish) and my weight will drop a little or stay the same then I’ll have a few months of craving sweet things and carbs and my weight will start creeping up again.xx

Also, you adapt to exercise, so the calorie burn tends to decrease over time, unless you up the intensity of the exercise (Or in weight lifting, utilise progressive overload).

Eating less than you burn is the key.
