This post is inspired both by the recent success of the Invictus Games and by a young man i was chatting to on the check out of my local supermarket who was going to join the British Army.
We're all too familiar with the damage done to our brave young soldiers by IED's but the tragic loss of limbs is only the beginning, the part we all see.
What is far worse, and what our soldiers really need rehabilitation for, is the terrible damage done to the groin. If you think about it it's pretty obvious; any explosive force capable of removing the strongest bone, muscle and sinew found in the human body will have no trouble at all in destroying the soft, vulnerable tissue of the groin.
This not only results in the loss of the genitals but also severe damage to the anus and rectum often resulting in the need for double stoma bags.
There are two things i find interesting and appalling here. Firstly, that this is never reported and secondly, that knowing this, successive governments have repeatedly failed to develop suitable protection for that area.
We deserve to be informed.
