For me I think you've got to break it down a bit further

Best singer

Best musician, plays an instrument

Best song writer

I learnt the other day Meatloaf never wrote any of his songs but he could sing same with Elton John and loads others

I always wonder how many of the "greats" would get through an X Factor audition

Greatness has different meanings to us all, but I can't think of one that discounts Alice Coltrane.

There and to the left a bit

You'd have to go a long way to beat Prince for sheer musical ability

Singer/performer, yes - one of the best, but the guy couldn't play an instrument and never wrote a song (I don't think).

True, but his voice was an instrument!

Did write a few pices and was also fluent in Spanish...

Jimi Hendrix. Most rock guitarists count him as a major influence.

Maybe controversial but Chas Hodges from Chas&Dave.

Played with many greats including Jerry Lee Lewis, made it in America in a rock style group. Wrote loads of songs and music for West End shows and other musicians. Did the bass line in Slim Shady. Played multiple instruments. Packed concert venues for 50 odd years

As far as popular music goes; Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder would take some beating.

Jerry Lee Lewis was a shade funky on the keys too.

I'm a prince fan but I think Bob Dylan should get a shout and Lennon and McCartney.
