Should supermarkets save the left over food?

Do you also agree that instead of them throwing it away they can give the left over food to good causes, some do but not many, such as to food banks and even the homeless, tons of foods are thrown away everyday. |

It is a shameful thing the way so much edible food is simply dumped. I’m in a cash & carry, and have had to throw away so much stuff that could have been used to feed the homeless. Even baby milk formula that was one day out of date. I’m not talking boxes either, I’m talking pallets. All those babies dying from malnutrition in the world too. Such a shame, such a waste. |

I've seen £1000's worth of food go straight in the wastage for simply coming in with the wrong barcode.... |

I work in a supermarket and people don't realise it's not as simple as that. We offer the food banks and local homeless shelters the left over food after final reductions at night and they reject 90% of it because it's on date and they won't use it atter that. Anything left however goes into the staff area and is given to the staff for free so it doesn't just go in the bin. |

Many shops are now working with organisations to save best before dated products going to waste. One of the biggest issues has been for the larger super markets especially has been finding organisations that can actually handle the amount of stock being supplied. Big issue with many of them is they are volunteer driven and do not have the resources to deal with such large amounts at any one point. |

In my area alot of the larger super markets give left over food to our local food Bank |
