Years ago used to hitch hike all over the uk and around Europe.
Never had one bad experience with anyone who picked me up.
It’s the waiting around for a lift is the worst bit but no worse than when you train or flight is cancelled. Though you are not normally by the side of the road.
Don’t see many hitchhiker these days. I still will stop to pick them up.... |

I have 2 really memorable experiences from my hitchhiking days.
The first was when I hitched from Gloucester to Iona. Just south of Birmingham a guy took me all the way to Glasgow and even bough me food on route. Even though I had money to pay my own way.
I once picked up the brother of a very famous musician took him all the way from Coventry to Plymouth. He had no money I gave him £10 not expecting to see it back. I week later he called to return the cash. We have kept in occasional touch ever since. He even got me on the guest list and backstage at one of his brothers gigs.
You never know who you can meet...
