So imagine that the UK has just discovered oil off the coast of Cornwall and it will provide billions of new public money for a long time. The Prime Minister calls you in to Downing Street and tells you the new funds have been allocated to new mental health services and they want your ideas on how to spend it. Nothing is off limits so what would you suggest? It can be anything from drugs that aren't currently on the NHS to free walk in rehab center's with unlimited stays... doesn't have to be cost effective! |

Id say forget the oil....we dont want to ruin more of the earth and legalise cannabis...spend the revenue on educating people on the signs of a pending mental health issue and what to do to help... |

"Research, and lot's of it."
This definitely.
I’ve had to go private with my child because the best meds for her aren’t licenced for children on the nhs. |

"Give everyone a Universal Basic Income and set up drop in talking therapy centres everywhere "
What do you think the centres should be like? Do you think a therapist is the most important part or would residential ones be a big advantage? |

You have to spend the money at fixing the root causes of depression. So lots of research is needed. Is it people struggling with basic living costs? Poor diet and people not being able to feed themselves? Lack of counselling to overcome the effects of childhood trauma etc. It's a complex issue |

Looking at it as mental “wellbeing” rather than necessarily prescribed services, need not involve a huge amount of money.
What it does need to involve, is a shift in attitudes so as not to stigmatise others, or ourselves.

So that pot of money can be used for advertising campaigns similar to the successful “see me, not my disability” ones.
Inject money into peer support schemes. Those with lived experiences don’t necessarily need to be paid directly. They do need to have suitable coaching and supervision (in the support sense) and giving them the best environment to deliver.
Make counselling training, as well funded, as some teaching and nursing qualifications which are currently skewed, to encourage uptake. |

It’s a fact apparently. I saw it on Facebook so it must be. Don’t seem to work on your own though |

Preventative measures.
I think there's been a trend for depression, anxiety and other associated areas increasing which is very much connected to modern lifestyles.
I'm not sure if many of these are psychiatric conditions but rather preventable poor lifestyle habits in some cases.
Not every one who feels sad or low is suffering a serious problem; that's life and it's emotional rollercoaster? But if you don't adjust it'll become worse?
It begins at home with parenting and onwards through life. |

my own little sanctuary |
It's not entirely a budget related issue. A lot of mental health issues could be prevented as for a lot of people depression and such is a product of worrying if they will have a job tomorrow. This is only a fraction of cases of course but if you look how many people are on 0 hour contracts or work through agencies that instability is detrimental to people's mental health. After all how can people invest in their futures in terms of mortgages etc. When companies have an untouchable way to deny people's rights as workers.
And if you are grieving most companies (in my experience) don't allow sufficient time to grieve. If you have to see a counsellor that takes time and financial pressures often force you to choose between your mental health and physically being able to support yourself. |
