Louis CK spending 3mins talking about “everything is amazing, and nobody is happy”.

https://youtu.be/kBLkX2VaQs4

Do you choose to make a deliberate and conscious effort to experience and appreciate the positive side of life, or do you find yourself falling prey to the negative bias that is hardwired in our brains?

What moans (watch the clip) have you had recently? What things have you taken for granted that are amazing?

I liked him before I found out he was some sort of sexual predator.

I don't think we're wired to be negative, but it's become endemic within the media, thus everyone moans and before you realise it so are you?

It's great to step away from negative environments and realise you don't have to be like that.

I think I'm relatively positive but maybe I've got it easier than some?

Yes, that does turn the tide. Suspend the who and go with the content.

“The negativity bias” in terms of the tendency for our brains to notice, absorb, and react to bad things—threats, dangers, worries, anger, mistakes—more strongly and persistently than to good things—pleasure, joy, beauty, and supportive relationships, among others - the hardwired vigilance survival techniques that we don’t necessarily need so much these days.

Think I know the clip, where the dude is moaning about the WiFi not working on the airplane, something that he didn’t know had been invented about an hour ago.

People are become entitled and they don't realise how good they have it. It's all that first world problems thing.

We try very hard to teach our kid that the things that we have are as a result of work , not just a giving right.

As always I hope I make sense

Interesting idea, I don’t know.

Emotional tears contain stress hormones which means crying actually excretes the stress!

I'm trying really hard to focus on the positives right now. I go through phases where I feel a bit overwhelmed and negative about things but then I remind myself of all of my blessings and focus on myself and things that make me happy. I'm incredibly lucky to be alive and have good health.

There’s so much good stuff to be thankful for. I think it’s important to not view the world through a negative lens - not least for reasons of CBT, what you think affects how you feel physically and emotionally, and then affects how you respond.

the more we have the more we want.

We try to take pleasure in the small things. A sunny day, a walk by the sea that sort of thing. We still get annoyed by stuff, why wouldn't we we're only human. We're not so unaware that we're not able to realise where our petty complaints rank in the grand scheme of things and appreciate what we do have.

I find it a little tiresome when successful, wealthy, white men decry other people's entitled attitude.

I love that clip. The part about the flight makes me laugh because I’m like that ... any tiny bit of turbulence and clearly I’m going to die and that’s the spin on my tale when I get home

I do think people lose sight sometimes of how much they have, I’m not just talking about material things, I’m talking about health, family and friends. I try to appreciate what I have. It isn’t ‘things’ that make me happy really, it’s my family and friends. Obviously there are times when negativity can creep in but I work in an environment where it very quickly puts things into perspective and although it’s difficult to see and hear, I do feel that it helps me to focus on how much value I have in my life. I’m rambling, I hope it makes sense

Meh it's not what I thought it would be.

I thought it would be a clip about language and how people use ever emotive positive language whilst their objective happiness decreases. For example, saying how totally amazing my perfect Prince charming, soul mate of a boyfriend is - a week before they break up over a Facebook post

In our household, we prefer numbers to words and serve each other 7/10 meals as standard and 8.5 kisses.

How would you answer the questions you pose OP?

I’m a generally positive person and try to let negativity flow over me. But that doesn’t mean I’m naive enough to not see negativity or be blind to it - there’s a lot of it around! It’s how you deal with it that’s the key!

That’s true, Dan. To be honest I’m finding your continual picking on me to be negative but I mostly choose to ignore or deflate it with humour, this time I’m going to call you out on it though. What is the issue you have with me?

Well I’m certainly not picking on you Estella, I’m sorry you feel that way. It’s a perfectly reasonable question isn’t it?

If you’re referring to the other thread, which I guess you are, I thought it was perfectly reasonable debate we had wasn’t it? A two way debate where you certainly gave as good as you got!

So if you can articulate where you think I have been unreasonable or picking on you, I will readily and publically apologise to you, on the basis that you do the same if I can articulate the same about your responses to me.

Agreed?

I never intend to intentionally cross the line between fair debate and ‘picking on people’ so, as I say, will publically apologise and retract all statements that I can see constitute bullying or harassment.

Being brought up in a family that firmly believes they couldn't win raffle even if they bought the whole book, I've had to work really hard to get out of that "eeyore mindset" and into a positive place where I make my own happiness and don't rely on anything or anyone else's behaviour to shape my mood.

Positivity is a central part of who I am and how I see the world. But I've noticed lately that I'm not visualising my own success in certain areas as much as I once did. So it feels right that I have to work more on that
