A big shout to Thom Yorke, Billie Holliday, Jeff Buckley and Joni Mitchell. Love also for Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Nina Simone, Al Green and Janis Joplin.
Trying to pick my fav but can’t choose between the final two; Bob and Billie - for various sentimental, personal reasons and what their voices stir in me. |

"Wouldn't say he's the greatest vocalist .. but Johnny Cash paints pictures with his style.. "
Plenty of great voices aren't great singers, that's for sure. |

George Michael for me with a big shout for Nat King Cole "
The dearly departed soul man takes it for me as well.

I'll take Howlin Wolf, Michael Hutchence and Andrea Bochelli over Freddy' show pony' Mercury any month of the century.
As for the ladies, i'll add Dusty Springfield (the voice of liquid velvet) and Bjork (unique, quirky, imaginative) to the list |

"Paul Robeson
Matt monroe
Frank Sinatra
Dean Martin
Nat King Cole
Forgot Mario Lanza"
A big yes to all of these, apart from Sinatra. Great timing and rhythm, but a flat sounding voice imo. I'll add the late Montserrat Caballé to that list and retire happy |

Don't think you could really choose a greatest of all time but i agree with the OP George Michael has a beautiful voice, seemed to get better as he aged.

"An on form Amy Winehouse was a joy to listen to.
As is me in the shower
I've heard it's golden...
Filth. Your imagination is pure filth.
Id make Satan blush. "
Nah, I’m just slightly overheated. |

Thanks Clem, I am. I ate banoffee and I think it cured me. I’m attempting another night out tomorrow. Watch out London. |

I met George Micheal when he was on his community service. Was living in a hostel in London (St Mungos) and he came there for few hrs. Must have been about 10 years ago. Didn't recognise him. Scruffy clothes, baseball cap. |

Some great shouts across this thread and differentiating between any based on personal taste is incredibly hard, I just wanted to shout out Sarah Vaughn who regularly gets overlooked by more ‘well known’ artists of her time, her vocal tone, control, power and ‘soul’ makes her a legend.
(probably not popular, agreed but great call for Queen Bey) |

"Not sure if she’s been mentioned yet as the thread is a long one, but for a really soulful voice surely there has to be a mention for Dusty Springfield"
Yes watched a documentary about her recently .....another classic singer |
